Since it's a NHL hosted event they are mandated to attend that one. A guy like Eichel declined to attend because of it. In any case I am not even sure whether guys would have attended even if there was no WC but it certainly did not help.

It didn't have a major impact, I think. Eichel was more than likely gonna decline no matter what. Nobody really declined because of the WCOH, but contracts were a major factor. Gaudreau and Seth Jones both wanted to play but didn't have contracts and weren't gonna get new ones that quickly. Galchenyuk wanted to play but was injured and wasn't released. It was just an especially bad year for the US cause the top notch ish American players who actually wanted to play had legitimate reasons they couldn't and then when the usual guys decline, it makes the team look much worse than it should

Germany confirmed their place in the QF with this win.

Technically, they could still miss the QF spot to Slovakia, who are 4 points behind with 2 games to play. However Germany plays Hungary in their last one and Slovakia is up against Finland and USA. Actually, even France are technically still in it, if they get at least 5 points against Canada and Belarus...

Very important win for us, hope we can make it to the quarters now. This team is better than most of the teams we had for the wc, Kahun looks really good. I thought he would get drafted 1 or 2 years ago and was somewhat sad afterwards.

I don't really like two of our four lines though, they don't really match all that well. Gogulla-Hager-Schütz is playing the best hockey by far, and Seidenberg-Goc-Kink do a good job defensively and on the forecheck, but Flaake-Kahun-Reimer doesn't look all that hot, and neither do Noebels-Draisaitl-Macek.

Reimer didn't look all that impressive when paired with Kahun and Rieder, but at least those two were doing well. Now that Rieder is missing and Flaake has taken his place, the whole line shows very little offense. Meanwhile Draisaitl and Macek do well together on the powerplay, but even strength that line seems to be caught in the defensive zone way too often.

No idea how to better mix those two lines though. And I'm not sure if it's all that good idea to make any changes now, after all, the team is winning.

This tournament is already a success though. They wanted to reach the quarterfinals and look very likely to reach that goal, anything beyond that is a plus. You could ask the question whether finishing third in the group instead of fourth would actually be a disadvantage, if you look at the additions Russia got, but then again, Germany would be the clear underdog against any of Czechia, Russia or Sweden, so it doesn't really matter. 3rd place would (likely) get more points for the world rankings though, which is important for the groups for next year.

Go Germany. Hockey USA should be embarrassed with this team. They need to do more to get players to accept invites.

And where is Eichel? At least ROR showed up.

Eichel has play a lot hockey, he wants to take some time off to rest. ROR was injure for several weeks so he didn't play enough to need a rest.

Congratulations from Poland, well deserved win :)

Germany fans, any words on Noebels and Boyle? (this game and overall)

Thanx in advance and good luck tommorrow!

The US always brings young guys to this tournament.

Wanna know why? Becuase this tournament is a joke. Any tournament that isn't best on best is pointless at the international level.

German hockey is pretty entertaining. How's their youth system looking?

There doesn't look to be the next Draisaitl, but the future generations look like they're going to be MUCH better in terms of depth.

As of now, their next best player is looking like Yannik Valenti. http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=266985 Also Danjo Leonhardt is posting some pretty good stats, but he's still quite young. http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=319668

But the national team should be better when players like Julian Napravnik, Benjamin Beck, Lean Bergmann, Louis Latta, Lukas Kalble, Manuel Wiederer, Mike Fischer, Tobias Eder, Dominik Bokk, Tim Fleischer, Sebastian Hon, Bastian Eckl, Cedric Schiemenz, and Manuel Alberg all join the fold. Probably a good amount won't become NHL players, and some of them will bust, but there are others in this list that will surprise and become good. I don't share the other German posters comments that it doesn't look good. I think it is what it is, the difference in talent between the great players and bad players in the youth systems are still large part, but you can't honestly say that Germany has not improved it's development system. Me posting around 15 names that can seriously help Germany on the international stage shows that they have IMO.

Didn't see most of this game so I can't really comment on it, but overall I liked Noebels in the tournament. Nothing flashy (except one beauty pass to Draisaitl for his goal agains Belarus) but a lot of good work offensively and defensively.

Boyle frustrates me. He is doing some things quite well, but his decision making in the offensive zone has been annoying. A lot of times when he had an open shooting lane he would dust off the puck and patiently wait until the lane is blocked before he shoots it into the defending player, and on the other hand, when he didn't have a shooting lane he would just blast off a shot without hesitation, once again usually hitting a defending player.
I liked what I saw from him in the 3rd period of this game (the only period I saw). That was exactly what I wanted to see from him.

Agreed, no matter who wins it doesn't feel the same. A WHC for Canada means very little since it is all B C and D teams playing.

Maybe if the NHL no longer allows player participation in the Olympics in the future, these games will become more important and US players will not refuse so often.

So like the WJHC?

I mean the best young talent is already in the NHL, so there's no point in caring about that tournament either, right?
