Congrats, South Africa and Mama Joy. You were magnificent. South Korea... good grief what a crap effort and performance. I hope these guys, even if they get in as a 3rd place wildcard, have to do a second tour of compulsory military service. Just a bunch of K-pop pretty boys.

Likely this brings us to Egypt vs. South Korea, winner plays the US/Bosnia winner.

Awful though that we're looking at games like Canada-South Africa in the round of 32 on one hand and then teams like Holland/Japan/Brazil/Morocco get each right off the bat. Feels ridiculous.
Netherlands/Morocco gets to play South Africa or Canada the next round, I wish we got to do that. Can't feel sorry for them.

So, correct me if I'm wrong here, but South Korea aren't actually mathematically eliminated from this result, but... it's a very long shot for them at this point.
According to Gemini:
South Korea is not yet eliminated, but they are no longer in control of their own destiny. They have finished 3rd in Group A with 3 points and a -1 goal difference.

To advance to the Round of 32, they now have to finish as one of the eight best 3rd-placed teams across the 12 tournament groups.
  • The Good News: Having 3 points and a relatively narrow goal difference (-1) keeps them very much alive. Historically, in a 48-team format, several 3rd-place teams with 3 points do manage to squeak through if other groups have lower-scoring draws or teams finishing on 1 or 2 points.
  • The Bad News: They will have to watch the scoreboard anxiously over the next few days. If eight other 3rd-place teams finish with 4 points, or finish with 3 points but a better goal difference/more goals scored, South Korea will be heading home early.

They're probably fine. Scotland was thought to be 50/50 with 3 points and a -3 GD. South Korea has 3 and a -1 GD. It might even work out better for them. Their likely R32 opponent if they get in as a 3rd place team is the Group G winner, and then R16 against USA/Bosnia. Which path is more difficult? Belgium/Egypt/Iran and then USA or Canada and then Netherlands/Japan/Morocco.

It's not a given that they get in and a clear better route to the point where one might ask if they did it on purpose(which could happen later with Austria/Algeria, 3rd preferable to 2nd), but it could work out for them
