This is what I meant when I said before and after South Africa's first game that they didn't play their game.
Hugo Broos tried to 5D chess in the leadup to the tournament. He debuted a new back 5 with big physical midfielders and his biggest forwards. I think he was so aware of his team's weakness on set pieces that he tried to overcompensate by changing the team's identity.
Credit to Broos, he threw his plan out of the window after game 1. Against Czechia, they were not clinical but they ran circles around the Czechs. And against South Korea, they really played their game and played to their strengths. They are what they are, they're a speed based lineup. They will swarm the box, and then swarm to get back. They're weak on set pieces, but they could give a team some trouble. I honestly think, purely from an athletic perspective, they are more of a challenge to Canada than South Korea would have been.
Everyone, myself included, greatly overrated South Korea after one game. They ran circles around the Czechs. And we thought that was credit to their speed and their quality, but we later discovered, everyone runs circles around the Czechs. They have one guy who can beat people 1v1. At the end of the day, that's just not enough, it's really tough to play football if you can't win 1 on 1.
And the Czechs...suck. I think it's possible that every player of theirs was slower than his counterpart in each of the three games. They only produce one type of player, and it's very hard to fix your car with only hammers.
