Yes you can trip a player if you hit the puck first! Otherwise defensemen would never throw themselves on oddman rushes to clear the puck! If you clear the puck and then trip up the player, if it's an automatic call every time very few D-men would swipe for the puck. It's not an automatic call as far as I know.

That is one reason I think most of the so called offensive d-men are underrated defensivly, since a big part of the defense is being comfortable with the puck. Larsson is good without the puck but not as good with it.
