Ah ok, the no chance for PO teams lottery thing .. sorry I think for the right compensation of players and picks you give away a tkachuck worthy pick, so, yeah I think the new lottery rule doesn't change the pain and gain logic of a draft day deal, if it makes sense for both ..

.. they look really strong together matthews and tkachuk.

what did the canuck have to give away to get the second sedin pick back then? anybody remembers that?

vancouver had #3

they traded bryan mccabe and a furture 1st to chicago for #4

then they traded #4 plus two other picks to tampa for #1

then they traded #1 to atlanta for the #2, plus one other pick, on the condition the thrashers not draft daniel

really they got both those picks for kinda cheap tbh

Interesting and really creative. Just wondering what was stopping Atlanta from drafting a Sedin anyway.

I believe the rumor at the time, was that the Sedin's were gonna play two year's of minor hockey in NA if they weren't drafted by the same team, at which point they would've both become UFA's. So once Burke had 1 and 3, he let Atlanta move up on the condition they didn't draft Daniel. The incentive being, being able to pick 1st OA, where as if Van had taken Daniel 1st, Atlanta may have taken Henrik 2nd, but the lure of the first pick was enough for Atlanta to pass on Daniel.

I was just thinking to myself, well Atlanta got Kovalchuk so it turned out fine. Wrong draft.......Patrik Stefan......ouch.

My one regret from my draft rankings last year was I only had Werenski at #10 when I had him higher all year leading up to the draft. This man/kid is so impressive. I had him and Hanifin paper thin close with Hanifin as the better Defenceman. It's still too close to call. But its hard not liking Zach seeing him this year in the tourney.

Lowry is a clown. He's letting his top guys take 2+ min shifts at a time. Canada's top guns won't have any legs left.

I couldn't believe what I was watching yesterday with the shift lengths. It was unreal.

Has this guy ever even coached before?

Was Stefan even regarded as a top prospect back then? Did the Atlanta GM know he was getting ripped off?

Werenski's been good, I'm sure Hanifin would have been as good or better in this tournament though.

Don Waddell had his heart set on the player who would one day become famous for the empty-net goal he DIDN'T score.

If Hanifin was here, I am sure he would be giving a good account of himself. Different styles of players but both are high quality possible franchise D men. I thought this last year also. I see nothing this year to change my mind.

It's a testament to the growing strength of hockey in the US that they can select a WJC team with a genuine shot at gold, without having elite players like Eichel, Hanifin, and Larkin available, and still have people complain about other players that weren't picked.

Honestly this Sedin picks trades were like the one clear cut positive think Burke ever did for the franchise.

Not quite sure how this thread became a 1999 Draft discussion (maybe a 10-1 score will do that), but.......

The top of that Draft was interesting. Looking back at articles from the time, Stefan was considered by a good chunk of folks as the best prospect available albeit some were worried about his concussion history. Some preferred Brendl but many were worried about his compete level. There was some concern about how the Sedins might play if they were split up and/or secondary concerns that they didn't want to be split up.

As bad as it seems now, Atlanta simply preferred Stefan which was reasonable at the time. Burke ended up not having to pay a fortune to move up since everybody ended up with who they wanted.

yeah maybe, because they didnt have 1st overall, but if you have a bryan mccabe version sedin draft year, top notch offensive dman, prospect another pick and I don't know why a GM shouldnt draft a top 5 pick

I always wonder what might've been for Atlanta had Stefan turned into the 80 point player he was supposed to. Him Kovalchuk and Heatley would've been a helluva line for quite a few years.

I also find it somewhat surprising that the Sedin's are currently the only two active players from that draft (I guess technically it is three since Martin Havlat, as far as I know, hasn't retired yet)

34//35 is not particularly old for an NHL player.

btw completely disappointed by Milano .. he is this highlight reel sunshine player that can't dominate or decide a game, unfortunately won't have a stellar NHL career I fear

tough to say one way or another of course

So many of these super skilled guys like the ones Edmonton picks every year rely on their speed and hands to score tons of goals in junior. In the NHL you can't just skate away from most forwards or even defenseman. So small guys or average guys who play small that have great hands have to be able to use their bodies to protect the puck in the NHL. That's why guys like Sam Gagner (who had great puck skills) fail and guys like Claude Giroux succeed.

Some guys learn the NHL and get better and better (like Oshie) while others don't (just about all the fancy forwards Edmonton drafts)
