Wow sounds like Lazar was really upset with Virtanen for getting involved as many here have speculated!!

Was he giving Virtanen a face-wash here or trying to break up the fight?

Would you mind outlining why you think the other Swedish players who poured on the ice weren't suspended? How about the other players involved in the scrum? Why weren't they suspended for the gold-freaking-medal game?

I know I could be reaching here but might it be because Pettersson was throwing punches??

You don't think that sets precedence for what might be suspendable in a non-playoff game?

I haven't been able to find any IIHF examples of where gloves on punches (that weren't sucker punches) resulted in a suspension.

Backes-Salmela started as a gloved fight, but by the end they had their gloves off and were punching each other, so they both got suspended.

As for Pettersson, The IIHF clearly referenced that the suspension was about Pettersson starting an altercation when he wasn't supposed to be on the ice. It seems pretty clear that he would have avoided a suspension if he had done that as a player who was on for the last shift. Neither going on the ice or gloved punches appear to be sufficient for suspension on their own.

The following gloved fight (although they aren't very good at it) didn't result in a suspension either, although they were tossed from the game. So I'd conclude that Virtanen was potentially at risk of getting tossed from the game (although the Stralman-Kovalchuk fight was much longer than the Virtanen scrum), but at no risk of being suspended for what he did.

Kind of besides the point, but a few days ago few cared Virtanen was getting 4th line minutes, now it's a concern that he would hurt his team by getting a one game suspension while retaliating to a bad hit on the team captain?

As a player, I don't think you want to see a potentially dangerous hit on your captain in the closing minutes of a 4-1 game right before the biggest game yet. All in all, Virtanen was the most expendable player on the ice.

Lintuniemi did only what OHL has teach him, when your are losing, try to take somebody out. This is maybe a second time that i have seen a Finn make a dirty hit when we are losing, usually Americans and Canadians do those kinda hits against us when we are ahead.

Even Crosby, a better junior player than McDavid, didn't dominate on his team as a 17 year old. Bergeron, Carter and Getzlaf were all better forwards, and Phaneuf was better on defence. Even when the 17 year old is the most talented player on the team, they rarely perform the best.

aha...for the same reasons Seguin leaves Boston and instantly becomes a Top 10 scoring threat...you give elite level players the opportunity, put them in a position to succeed and low and behold look what happens. The idiots at HC never wanted, nor did they ever have any intention of putting Mackinnon in position to succeed. The dumb dumbs at HC all huddle together, hold hands, jump up and down to scream their mantra only 19 year olds can play only 19 years old can play...
They took a younger team to Malmo last year for 2 reasons, 1 the obvious, some players not available, but the most important reason, with this year's tournament in mind. reputations and jobs are on the line.

What's this chatter I'm picking up of the Finnish coach criticizing Groulx for speaking French at the post game press conference?

Did this actually happen? The whining from the Finnish coach I mean. Seems a tad bit silly.

Jeez just watched the highlights after reading this thread. Youd think Virtanen was eating babies based on this thread.

No big deal. Finnish player made a hit late in the game Jake gave him a few shots. Exactly what you want.

Well he doesn't understand any word of French. Thats why he whined.

He was upset because he had been asked whether he wants to join the press conference earlier and he had declined (he wanted to do his interviews in the open "mixed zone") , but the organizers made him go to the conference anyway. He then spent half an hour listening to the other coach speaking French, a language he doesn't understand. Apparently he felt the situation was "humiliating" and he had no reason to be there.

Apparently according to IIHF rules the opening statements must be spoken in English or there has to be an interpreter, yet the Canadian coach spoke French and there wasn't an interpretation.

Stupid thing to complain about, really.

IIHF rules :) often not worth the paper they are written on...but the whole incident is funny. Welcome to Quebec.

Jortikka should speak Finnish only at the next press conference. Bundeskansler Helmut Kohl always spoke German everywhere he went.

What happened at the end of the game that everyone is talking about? I rage quit when when it became 4-1 and didn't see the final minutes.

I hope he answers in Finnish the next time local journalists interview him.

So? Why does he have to hear the Canadian coach at all? Hire a frigging translator if you care. Also, maybe a life skills coach...

Go ahead an answer in finnish next time as suggested by some. No one cares what he has to say anyway, if he's going to act like a little *****.

Always drama with some countries.... :shakehead

Because the organizers forced him to, in previous games he only had to do the mixed zone stuff but this time they made him sit through a half an hour of a press conference in French only. They later apologized to him for it. So calm down, you are looking like the drama queen here.

Oh, I really enjoyed the game. Atta boy Virtanen!! :thumbu: loved that fight. Team spirit baby!!

Also, what a talent Max Domi is! Wow! He reminds me so much of Martin St.Louis. He's fast, his skating is perfect, he can pass beautifully, his skill is amazing. He's gonna be huge for Arizona.

good game by Canada

Let's see the biggest test on Wednesday, but I'm pretty confident they won't have a problem with the Americans.

Re Virtanen, he did the right thing. The IIHF rules are the only problem here and the only thing I'm afraid of, but it seems they are more tolerable this year. Canada has had some huge hits in this tournament and no calls yet - which is how it should be.

Why do I have that feeling that the refs are letting a lot more go because this is being held in Canada I'd be willing to bet if this was in Russia or Sweden Virtanen would've been kicked out of the game for what he did. Crap like that has cost Canada in past tournaments. I get why he did it, but he can't lose his cool like that. This isn't the WHL. The coaches should be reminding the team about that sort of thing every game so it gets cemented in their heads. We can't have Virtanen flipping out in a Semi-Final or Gold medal game and allowing the other team a 4-5 min PP and costing us goals and possibly the game, and possibly losing him for the game. Virtanen was ready to get that guy's head off...calm down
