Finland has played just like I expected in USA and Canada games. We would have beat Slovakia 9 times of 10. But yes, I'm worried about the Germany game.

With the lack of scoring we have right now and puck luck in tournament, I actually would not be surprised if we lost 1-0 to Germany out shooting them 55-6

One massive mistake Canada makes (or at least has made for the past few years) is try to make a team of third line grinders out of a bunch of scorers.

Mackinnon made a couple of mistakes, as offensive players will do, and he got sat down. The exact same thing happened with McD last year under Sutter.

We bring these kids up and glorify all of their offensive exploits, and then add them to a team where we tell them they have to play a 200 foot game. It just drives me nuts.

It feels like this year the reigns have been loosened a bit and the kids are playing the game the way that got them there in the first place.

McD is a 17 year old kid playing with guys two years older than him. In Erie he is the show and everything centres around him. Now he is one of a bunch of great players with bloodlines and NHL teams and whatnot.

Sometimes we forget that they are still children because they look like men. He is an intimidated kid. Cripes at 17 I was afraid to ask a girl out, and we are asking this kid to carry the load that is probably too big for him - the nation's hopes.

I am proud of him and all of the kids. Someday McDavid will lead the NHL in scoring and any struggles he has right now will be forgotten.

Even Crosby, a better junior player than McDavid, didn't dominate on his team as a 17 year old. Bergeron, Carter and Getzlaf were all better forwards, and Phaneuf was better on defence. Even when the 17 year old is the most talented player on the team, they rarely perform the best.

Do me a favour and remember Jesper Pettersson's one-game suspension for punching with his gloves on last year and stop pretending that it was a cold calculated move by Virtanen.
He wasn't suspended for "punching with his gloves on". He was suspended because he came out of the penalty box and jumped Mironov, engaging him in a fight. We're not talking about a few gloved punches, over top of a ref, in a scrum. That was a full on fight. Pettersson was just too much of an idiot to drop his gloves.

It's completely different.

But it wasn't a "cold, calculated" move and no one is saying it was. You could tell he wanted to drop the gloves but didn't. Funny enough, he did show some restraint. If that's a WHL game, the gloves would have been off. He was showing some heart and passion, something Canadian U-20 teams of the past could learn a thing or two about.

McDavid is playing third line minutes on a stacked team. Eichel is the show on his. I do not see how we can really compare the two from this tourney alone.

Neither will the scouts, who will unanimously say McDavid is the runaway number 1 prospect this year, and he will go first overall.
In that case, can we say that Larkin > McDavid? He's outperforming both players with zero PP time while playing on the US' third line.

@markhmasters: Lazar on scrum w Finns in 3rd: "Jake & I were bugging Connor. He didn't want to get in there. Up to us Western guys to take care of that."

Wow sounds like Lazar was really upset with Virtanen for getting involved as many here have speculated!!

@markhmasters: Virtanen on coming to Lazar's defence: "Sticking up for my teammate & let them know we're not going to take that lightly esp w our captain"

Don't care. Fighting doesn't belong in international hockey.

But number running does? So you let another team run your captain from behind then throw up your hands and beg for a call and call it even ?

No thank you.

No idea why anyone was mad at Virtanen. If he had taken the only penalty then maybe I could understand it.

My big worry was the dude he was taking shots at was way bigger then him. Hell Ferraro even pointed it out in the TSN broadcast.

Other then that who gives a damn?

My only complaint with Virtanen tonight was his unwillingness to pass the puck to his teammates.

Lol, this is team Canada guys, not the Edmonton Oilers here. You gotta let the other team know, if you're ****ing with our captain, you're ****ing with the rest of us.

oh apparently he doesn't "pass" the puck enough, which is confusing, because the way he is playing is exactly why everytime he's out there on a shift, the play is in opposition end. They way he's playing is the way he played his way onto McDavid's wing.

Ahw well. The price of him drafted by Vancouver.

In other news, Domi and Reinhart were superstars today. Nurse and Theodore also had very strong games. Fucale was also excellent, earned the start vs. the US.

Ferraro said before the game and a lot during the first that this is supposed to be a really strong Finnish team pointing out the number of really good draft eligible players like Hintz etc.

What's going on?

He also later noted that the team is mainly 18 year olds and could be in preparation for next year when they're slated to host the tourny. They want to give their guys that will be around next year as much experience as possible and would sacrifice a medal this year to win next.

Seemed to know Exactly what was at stake and what the risks were... Seemed he was calculated and measured in his response on the ice there..

Well, there are opinions and there are facts, and you are just plain factually wrong this time. Pettersson was investigated "due to the fact that he was not on the ice when the game finished".

Where's the guy who said that don't act like it was a calculated response and cold? ;)

Would you mind outlining why you think the other Swedish players who poured on the ice weren't suspended? How about the other players involved in the scrum? Why weren't they suspended for the gold-freaking-medal game?

I know I could be reaching here but might it be because Pettersson was throwing punches??

You don't think that sets precedence for what might be suspendable in a non-playoff game?
