Based on organizational philosophy, we probably shouldn't expect McNabb to be given a spot in the top six. He'll most likely start out as 7th man and work his way up as he earns it. Of course, that could be as early as preseason. Or they will sign Schultz or someone like him to fight out with McNabb for the 6th spot. Another possibility for the 6th spot competition is someone else from Manchester. But one has to wonder who is putting that kind of upward mobility pressure on management.

I also wouldn't be that surprised if Lombardi is trying hard to sign both Greene and Mitchell based on this past year's success. Further, both Regehr and Martinez are UFA after next season. So at least one of Mitchell/Greene on a two year contract is some insurance. If the contracts are reasonable, either player could be traded down the line if passed on the depth chart. Having Greene as basically the 7th D worked out pretty well this past season. Of course, if the signing cost is too high or the term too long then either one could price themselves off the team.

4 years? Seriously? I guess he could always get traded....

Has to be under 3 million a year...can't pay your 6th dman that much...

4 years? So what does this mean for Willie and McNabb?

McNabb is a left shooting D, Greene a right. McNabb still looks likely to suit up as a 7 D this year and replace Regehr full-time when his contract is up next year.

Willie though...yea probably out.

My mistake, I always get the sides mixed up with the defense.

I don't know, i'd still feel more comfortable with Mitchell for 1-2 years than Greene for 4 but I guess we will see.

Mitchell missed the entire 12-13 season, yet has still played 34 more (regular season) games over the past two seasons than Greene. 4 years for Greene with his injuries, his declining play, and his declining importance (#6 D-man), is not good

Lombardi likes to have the left/right balance on D, and Greene does give the Kings a 3rd right shot. He's only 31, and just turned 31 at that. He's been hurt the last few years, which is an issue.

For me, the Kings have had too much success to get too worked about something like this. Lombardi, Sutter/Stevens, and Greene have all earned the benefit of the doubt from me. Greene is clearly a big part of the group, Sutter and Stevens have done all you could want in managing what they're given, and Lombardi has his plan.

Unless the Kings are going with 8 defensemen to start the year, this would probably mean Mitchell is gone. After all he's been through with the Kings, that would suck. If he is gone, he won't be forgotten.

If its 4 years I am guessing 2.5 per year cap hit. Actual salary first 2 year 7 million last 2, 3 million.

A little surprised at this, but he is one of the team leaders, and he's a smart player. I really didnt expect him to play as well or so much coming off the back surgery like he did. He must be good on that front, since they're offering a new deal.

Unless it's at a bargain basement salary I'm really not a fan of this deal. Greene is one of the few guys who I'd like to see DL let go. Mitchell is better despite being older. Plus, Greene hasn't even played 50 games in the last 2 seasons combined. This probably doesn't really impact Gaborik getting a deal though, assuming the rumors that Gabby's deal has already been signed are true.

Agree on all accounts and I personally wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings go to camp with 8 defensemen. I still haven't heard anything about injuries but I wouldn't be shocked if one of Mitchell, Greene or Regher need some sort of surgery. All of have had some injuries in the past year.

That's what I'm thinking.

Yep, that and a couple of other observations:

I always said DL isn't going to let us lose Scuderi, Mitchell, Greene, and Regehr all in consecutive seasons. Too much youth, too little grit, too little experience.

Greene is, by all accounts, a good soldier. Couple that with Mitchell's comments about not really wanting to accept a reduced role (paraphrased, he said something like I want to be a key guy) and it's pretty clear he's the odd man out this year, and Regehr probably the following, while we bring in McNabb.

Simply, Greene is right-handed.

This makes Martinez sort of a wild-card, because what's the long-term game for any of the Manchester D not named McNabb? Gravel, Forbort, Bodnarchuk...why would any of them stick around?

Smells like a precursor to some other d-tweaking. Not gonna get worked up about anything until a second move happens, which could be super-late in the summer.

You know we're spoiled if people are getting worked up over our #6/#7 d-man spot.

I hope this means that Regehr is retiring, I see Greene as a good swap in for Regehr but not Mitchell.

Matt Greene is a warrior and one of the undisouted leaders of this team.

The world gave up on Willie Mitchell back when Lombardi signed him as he was coming off of a serious injury and was something like 33 years old already. Greene can bounce back in the same way.

Nobody has six all-stars on defense. Matt Greene is a two-time Cup Champion who will go through a wall for this team and his teammates.

"What about McNabb?!?!11"

McNabb is going to get to develop at a good pace and learn how to be a pro from a guy like Matt Greene.

Culture everyone. Greater than the sum of the parts etc...
