Why didn't it really work for gretz and kurri on the kings when they were the best line in the league on edm?
1) Gretzky was just passing his prime. 1991-92 was his first mortal season. (He'd been 'Suter-ed' the preceding month.) Wayne got off to a rough start, including missed games (his father's health issue), and this would have affected Kurri's start, too.
2) Kurri may have been a bit fat and out of shape from a year in Italy.
3) Tomas Sandstrom with Kurri on the wings didn't really seem to work. Maybe the two were too similar in their approach to playing with Gretzky.
Kurri came back super-strong (presumably in better shape) to start 1992-93, despite (a) playing center for the first time and (b) Gretzky not playing at all. How strong was he? These was the NHL scoring leaders on Nov. 21st, 1992:
56 PTS (22 GP) Lemieux
46 PTS (22 GP) Kurri
43 PTS (20 GP) Lafontaine
Even as late as December 19th, 1992:
90 PTS (34 GP) Lemieux
58 PTS (33 GP) Lafontaine
56 PTS (34 GP) Kurri
After this point in the season, Kurri scored only 31 more points in 48 games.
