The Hockey Gods were smiling on the St. Louis Blues in 1980-81. They finished first in the Smythe Division with 107 points. Wayne Babych's 54 goals and 96 points contributed significantly to that success. He was the first Blue to hit the 50-goal mark.

Stevens didn't want to be there initially and I think had plans on going right back to St. Louis when he became a UFA, or something, so in that context it's not that hard to understand why the team didn't throw a C on him at first sight.

Look at old any 0ld high school yearbooks. Plenty of guys that could pass for 35 and girls looking worn out

Here we see NHL President Clarence Campbell presenting the Minnesota North Stars' Danny Grant with the Calder Trophy. In 1968-69, Grant scored 34 goals - as did fellow rookie Norm Ferguson, with the Oakland Seals. Grant received 119 votes; Ferguson received 112 votes.
