1) Even against this roster is not nearly good enough.

2) Why did those score effects never happen against the Caps when we were within reach all game?

I don't know about other games. All I know is in this game the second they took the 3-1 lead that is when the xG started to tilt in favor of the Islanders.

I have been watching hockey on TV for over 60 years and broadcast games for several years on radio. The NHL Network broadcast of todays game was one of the worst presentations of a televised game that I have ever seen. I have no idea who the PXP announcer was but he sounded like some teenager who got a free ticket to the game. Mike Johnson, who is a decent studio analyst, must have been shaking his head. “Showcase” broadcasts like these are an embarrassment to the league. If they are in the NHL studios in New Jersey, at least give them taxi fare and let them go to The Garden.

Yeah--I was thinking about mentioning this. The play by play guy was really really awful. Just wondering where he came from?

I don't think he's a play by play guy. He's more of a studio host. With EJ Hradek and Kevin Weekes doing the Finland games for NHL Network, I guess they needed to go to the bullpen. They don't have much depth there in Secaucus.

Igor was great once again though the Cizikas goal was pretty bad. Yeah he's going to make some big money.

Uncharacteristically subpar performance from Fox. I thought our best D today were Schneider, Lindgren and Jones. Lots of brain dead plays. Mika played better though. I liked Chytil at the end getting a shot in on Mayfield who leveled him in preseason.

Two best players this year have been Igor and Artemi. After that Lafreniere, Chytil, Cuylle and Kakko.

Watched some of periods 2 and 3 at Miller's but saw Mika was 2nd? star of the game with 2 assists. Was he better today? The one shift I kept an eye on him in the 1st he looked like a neanderthal on skates but it might've been end of shift.

Happy we beat these f***ers!

Is it really score effects when the Islanders had a large edge in the 1st but the rangers had a decent start to the 2nd which evened it up? I don’t think so.

Is that not how most games go? One team has an edge and then another gets an edge. It's not generally 0.1 xG for the Islanders than 0.1 for the Rangers then 0.1 for the Islanders. Yet pretty clearly in this one the Rangers started the second period strong, were gaining almost all the xG, scored a PPG to make it a 3-1 lead, and then immediately the Islanders proceeded to have the majority of the xG for the remainder of the game. That it would seem to be fairly obvious that the change was started by the game becoming a two goal game.

I haven't looked at the numbers but I thought that the Mika line was decent but we haven't seen those guys (previously with Trocheck) take over a game in a while. I think Panarin and Laf are good enough to keep that line together and the lineup looks more balanced now. What bothers me with how much I think they've underachieved is that the forwards are the best we've had 1-12 probably since 94. We said last year how we have the high end talent but no depth but with Chytil, Smith, and Cuylle's improvement we have both. This has to be on the D right? They just can't get out of the zone as presently constituted.

Pretty sure this is just a usage thing. Jones got ~62% of his ice time against the bottom six, Trouba ~17%, and Lindgren ~49%. Jones xG numbers in his time against the top six wasn't good either.
Interesting. But when you think this thru, it's another reason why Fox/Lindgren isn't our best option. Lav loves putting Lindgren out against the other team's stars. Hence, Fox has to play a more defensive game. Fox/Miller left us with 2 useless offensive pairs. The move is Fox/Jones, Miller/Schneider and the the other 2 as a match up pair.

No, I take score effects to mean that one team has an edge early in the game, they score and create a fairly substantial lead, and then coast the rest of the game and the other team racks up shot attempts and the game appears closer than it is. That’s not what happened this game. The Islanders were the better team throughout excluding a portion in the second period where the Rangers generated most of their offense.

The second one kind of was because Eli turned into Aaron Rodgers for four games.

The first one was during a stretch where they went 25-5 across two seasons.

2011 was the best year of Eli's career. Not fair to say it was only 4 games. But I can't take a 10-6 and a 9-7 Super Bowl as seriously as others.

I still don't know what was wrong with Miller-Fox, Schneider-Trouba that was working. Lavi's obsession with bad players? Schneider who is our 3rd best defenseman by a lot gets relegated to 3rd pairing to accomody a bum because he BLEEEEEEEDS for this team.

Schneider/Miller were great as the 2nd pair while Trouba was out. Miller was really stepping up. Now he's Fox's lackey or Trouba's baby brother again.

What I can't wrap my head around is that we got dominated against the Caps who played 5 D-men, the injury happened to one of their best, most of the game. They also had a goon as one of the 5 D-men who is not an NHL player in McIlrath and they still skated circles around us. Is our D really THAT bad or is this coaching? I know this isn't the Caps game but this team has been downright embarrassing defensively since that game.

Things felt very balanced with these pairs. Trouba even was contributing offense while Schneider's change of sides gave him plenty of opportunities to put strong shots on net. Lindgren returning prematurely really kind of f***ed everything up, but I'm sure someone said we can't keep him out of the lineup if he's "serviceable" and we're paying him 4.5 on the year.

Speaking of the play by play guy. How many times did he call Lindgren--Lindgrem? I even heard him call him Lindgrom. Ryan's been in the league for 7/8 years? It was like what the hell.
