That name is so familiar. I think he was an instructor at the hockey school I went to in Rhode Island as a kid.

Not a name you'd forget.... Would make sense as he was a longtime Coach at Clarkson & then Boston.... Decent amateur player himself, played on Team USA in 1950 or so winning Silver. Was also a pretty decent baseball player as well apparently, best of his age in New England & likely couldve gone pro.

Was it at Brown? I went to a hockey camp there in the early 80's and I think I recall Coach Ceglarski being there, just can't remember 100 percent.

No, it was Portsmouth Hockey School in Rhode Island, 1972 and 1973.

^^^ Great shot there DB. A 1000 words.

Thanks Killion. I had the opportunity to attend the championship parade in 1978. I was also on hand at the Winnipeg Arena the previous evening when the Jets defeated the New England Whalers by the score of 5-3 and wrapped up the series in 4 games straight. It was an exciting time in Winnipeg as there was serious talk that a merger with the NHL would occur for 1978-79 and this would be the final WHA season and championship. Although the fans were a bit disappointed that it was also the swan song for Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson as they were already destined for New York to play for the Rangers in the following season, the sadness of their pending departure was outweighed by the excitement of the championship and the Jets possibly joining the NHL. As it turns out, the merger took an additional year to occur before the Jets would actually become an NHL member beginning in 1979-80 and they once again won the Avco Cup championship in the WHA’s final season.

It was an exciting time in Winnipeg...

Yes indeed it was, as Ive friends from Winnipeg who lived through it all & they like you conveying (usually over drinks) numerous stories to me over the years of growing up there in the late 50's, through the 60's & 70's... and what a magical time it all was for the city. Musically & culturally, and most of all, hockey with the Jets, football & the Bombers. ;)

October 3, 1997 - Gordie Howe suits up with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL for one game becoming the first pro hockey player to have played in six decades. The visiting Kansas City Blades would go on to win the game 5-4 in a shootout.

Captain Lars-Erik Sjoberg. If you never saw this smooth defenseman play, you missed a great one...:thumbu:

Problem is that is a retro jersey, and Crozier wore #31 the three games he played for The Caps...

I totally agree with you on this one Howie Hodge. Sjoberg was one of the best Jets ever and for the most part doesn't get the recognition he deserves. I would say that given the amount of time that has passed since he played his last game for the Jets in 1980 that he should be the next individual inducted into the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame. Not only was he instrumental in all 3 Avco Cup championships for the Jets, he played a big role in quarterbacking the Hot Line from the back-end allowing them to play so effectively in their offensive roles. Sjoberg was a true leader (nicknamed "The Little General") and became the first non-North American born captain in both the WHA and NHL. It was unfortunate that he passed away in 1987 due to cancer but it would be great to see a banner raised in his honor as a member of the Jets HOF.

Sjoberg didn't have the ideal size for a defenseman. He was small in stature, but few mastered the art of hipchecks like he did. He had great timing. He was a health fanatic and way ahead of time. He in fact was one of the first European hockey pioneers when it came to nutrition and eating the right way. But most importantly he was a natural born leader and commanded great respect both on and off the ice. When he spoke up in the dressing room, his teammates really listened to what he had to say. A really smart and a likeable person. All of his teammates had great respect for him as a person.
