To all of the posters contributing to this thread, thank you. Yes, it's a bit addictive, but so much fun!

Here's one of a barely 16 year old Mark Howe wearing his Team USA Olympic parade hat in 1972, just before the team departed for the Sapporo games.

Hard to believe that a boy so young was named to the team, but by all accounts he played very well, helping the team win an unexpected Silver medal.

^^^ Man those are some rare (and excellent!) shots. Dont think Ive seen any of them ever before & completely unaware of the back stories; Speer a Barber.... that picture of the Finnish Goalie Coach that would put to shame any of the more notorious drunken escapades & stunts performed by the likes of musicians Keith Moon, Joe Cocker & Harry Nilsson or actors like Oliver Reed & captured on film, pretty hysterical (was the guy alright?)..... As for the Zeidel-Shack stick fight, oh yeah, major MAJOR Suspensions if such an event were to occur today or anytime over the past 45yrs or so. Possibly Lifetime Ban's for both, wouldnt matter who started it. I think for sure the other players & officials on the ice today would intervene, stop it before it got viscous.

Even going back to more recent history when McSorley essentially just sort of "tapped" Brashear on the helmet but with apparently just enough force connecting in just the right spot which dropped the guy like he'd been shot (which shocked many as when you watch the game video it just doesnt seem like he was hit hard enough for what then transpired transpired) McSorley wound up in a World of Trouble.... just as others have over the years when fully weaponizing ones stick.... even early 80's compared to today, no way Billy Smith or Ron Hextall amongst other goalies would have completed full seasons. Absolutely Suspended for long periods, for sure charged criminally & sued civilly, probably jailed, ordered to take Anger Management Counciling & monitored thereafter, closely watched.

From left to right: Marc Tardif, Gilbert Perreault, Rejean Houle.

The 69 and 70 Montreal Junior Canadiens team was one of the finest ever assembled. Can't imagine trying to stop a line with two #1 overall picks and a #2 overall from the 1969 and 1970 entry drafts.

Youngsters today are often dubious when some of us "more seasoned" (ahem!) observers of the game recount some of the tricks of the trade that were once commonplace.

See Carl Brewer's gloves . ..View attachment 80881

The hockey magazine I used to read said that Brewer cut the palms out of his gloves so as to better grip his stick.

Later I learned that this arrangement enabled one to grab an opponent's jersey while the glove's fingers looked innocent to the officials.

That was my point. Even before jerseys came with "fight straps," lots of vets prone to fisticuffs had trainers quickly stitch the fabric to their pants. Brewer's gloves fit into that sphere of wily veteran equipment modification.

Tomas Hyka celebrating one of his four NHL preseason goals (the team's highest scorer) before the talented forward is eventually sent down because the Czech was signed earlier this year to an entry-level deal that is waiver exempt on an expansion club with too many defensemen to carry a regular slew of forwards.

Why else so many middle names? Ha?..... Alien-Human Hybrid. One minute Jarome, the next Arthur-Leigh...Tig... Junior. Kinda cool when you think about it. Never lonely.
