I'm deathly afraid of trading guys like Wallinder. The tools are fantastic and he displays legitimate upside. Even if it takes him until he's 26 I wouldn't be against giving him the time to figuring it out.
I totally understand this feeling, but if it got the Wings a slightly older long term player I wouldn't mind dealing him despite his upside. He could totally turn out to be a semi stud but I don't think he ends up better than Seider or Ed. I think he has potential top 4 potential, but I just don't necessarily see him getting the endless opportunity with the Wings to figure it out until he's 26. He is going to be out of waiver options soon.
At the NHL level he's going to have a hard time getting a PP opportunity on the Wings, as he will be competing with Seider, Ed (hopefully *shakes head*) and likely ASP. He isn't good enough defensively to be relied on in that role, so its going to be really hard for him to get that ice time to really develop. I get the not wanting to give up on the tools guy but I don't think the Wings are the team that will have the runway a guy like him needs. I'd rather use him as an asset before the shine wears off and have him turn into the top 4 elsewhere than wait until he's 24 hasn't gotten proper opportunities and looks like a washout and we get nothing.
There is also the long term money factor. You can only spend so much on D. The Wings have Seider and Ed. Seider is already at 8+mil and Ed will likely be by his next contract. Then you have an absolute offensive dynamo in the wings in ASP. He could be Makar 2.0 or be Ghost 2.0 we don't know yet. Even if he is Ghost 2.0 ie largely a 1 way PP QB putting up 50 pts, he is still going to get paid. Realistically I think a safe bet for ASP would be Hronek upside so I'll put him in at 7 mil on that 2nd contract. That's probably close to 24 mil on 3 guys. I honestly think we need a cheaper defensive dman to pair with Seider long term and ideally someone in that 24-27 age range more than we'd likely need another two way or offensive guy. If Wally becomes that bomber on the PP (again I don't think he'll get the opportunity here) he is probably going to cost more that we can afford long term on defense. Then it becomes a question is it worth spending all this time developing someone you would trade.
It's a lot easier to hide forwards and let them develop at their own pace than dmen, because you simply have so many more spots to fill. Guys need time to develop and I just don't see Wally passing through waivers or getting enough offensive opportunity at the NHL level to fully develop to his max potential.
