Post-Game Talk: Good teams find ways to win bad games

Are you familiar with the NHL by any chance?

Or hell this organization?

Sure -- ok., fine. Nepotism is a thing.

It doesn't change the fact that she was hired because she's a woman.

Run a simple thought experiment.

Take a man with the same resume. Do you advocate for him to be an assistance coach, and run the PP of YOUR hockey team?

If you answer "yes", you're an absolute idiot and deserve the results you receive.

I had to laugh listening to GYB this morning.

Brown goes "I have no idea who was coaching that power play, but the Oilers had the blue line stacked with 4 guys, and the power play had 4 guys standing there at the blue line. It is impossible to break in like that but they kept doing it. Whoever is coaching that needs to make adjustments."

Obviously he had no idea that the broadcast highlighted that she coached the PP before absolutely ripping it lol. You kind of make your bed with hires like that. Any other assistant coach would probably get shuffled out quietly, but now she has a cult following so you can't without being accused of some form of -ism I'm sure.

If she was indeed brought up before she was ready then it's a disservice to her as well. Not easy having to start again and work back up.

My answer is "I don't care, and anyone who does is an idiot."

I was thinking the same thing tonight and wondering how they’d survive the PR nightmare of firing her. It’s funny. Maybe they could offer her the head coaching position on their AHL team and call it a promotion.
Yeah. Its a demonstration of the dangers of this type of non merit hire. Once an org makes a decision to hire on virtue they can't really fire on performance. If they do they risk all the bad pr now. So that an org in the multi billion buck pro sports has created for itself an immense problem without easy solution.

Although I do think they will find some creative way around this but long after a male incumbent would've been fired.

Of course all the press on her is non performance related as well. The usual focus on dreams become reality disney fabrication and her handing lollipops to kids, riding unicorns, and the usual go girl stuff. But any other coach is evaluated on the basis of how they coach and to what success or failure. The virtue hire is evaluated on non performance basis. Really for actions that are entirely unrelated to the role and that are not even skillsets.

Sorry for the lateness, the new ms. OfCorsiDid is rather persistent.

I wouldn't make a sweeping statement about her coaching ability from one game. Have you watched the Oilers PP some nights? Lol
I didn't. I checked the Stats, have seen the inept PP on other nights. In anycase it was so bad a PP it was so outlier and the worst I'd seen all season. Hell any recent season. The PP was out of the ordinary bad, so much that the telecast was mocking it and they seldom do something like that.

The Oilers PP has never looked this bad. Well maybe in 93 but that was player personnel related.

Unfortunately I don't have the same feel.

To me the Red Wings game is ripe for a major letdown. They still have the tag and reputation of a bad/irrelevant team, but are on a major heater. They're going to be busting their ass in what is a statement game to them, and to us it's a Thursday against an on paper mediocre Eastern opponent.

Oilers will need to be on their toes early.
I couldnt agree more. This team is clearly trending down. In the last couple of games their defenisve play and puck management is about as bad as I have seen it since the first few games of the season.
As you pointed out that Detroit game is ripe for a major letdown.

Of course I would like nothing more than to have the team take stock and come out on Thursday with a renewed commitment to playing responsible hockey but unfortunately this team rarely learns preemptively. They almost always need to get their asses handed to them before they figure things out.

It's almost as if people should be hired based on merit...

I'm sure she's smart, but she hasn't even come close to paying her dues.

1 year in Germany (I believe).
2 years in the AHL.

BOOOOOOM

3. Assistant coach in the NHL.

Now, if they fire her Climate Pledge (ridiculous name btw) will be annexed and renamed "CHAZ 2".
Yep. I took a look at the resume as well. Doesn't look like she'll be getting NHL head coach anytime soon.

Wait.

Did Louie just say Pickard was our best pker after going on and on about how the kraken didn't get a fit on the pp?

He's got to be trying to get fired at this point, right?

It's just non stop bad take after bad take.
The best pk players we had last night were the Seattle Kraken. It was Monday but otherwise could be a drinking game of how many times do they f*** up and lose the puck even before hitting the line. It was hilarious. The Oilers weren't even having to do much beyond being in position.

Another comment but whatever players make a the dump pass back to the trailer on a 5 on 3 should be shot into the sun. You're just wasting time on the 5 on 3 doing that. But they seriously had trouble gaining zone on a 5 on 3. I almost wanted the Kraken to get more PP's just to see how much worse it would look and for the Oilers to get lots of scoring chances.

I tried looking at the Seattle board to see any of their opinions on this but they took a climate pledge not to waste electricity being online. Or something.

Gotta admit that snail race for the second WC spot between Calgary and Vancouver should be pretty compelling.
I think the Kings could miss playoffs. Unless Doughty injects them with something when he comes back but I doubt it. That team is sinking. Really they're losing to anybody lately.

Can't remember which baseball manager said it but he said "look you'll win 1/3 of games no matter what. It just plays out like that. And you'll lose 1/3 of your games for the same reason. It's what you do with the other 1/3 of games that determines how successful your team will be."

So yeah, these annoying slog wins are still what separates us from the pack.
Sounds like something Yogi Berra would say.

Fans don't hate the high event guys, they just hate it when high event plays don't work out.
Bouchard passes up on great scoring chances only to take lame shots later on that miss the net or get blocked.
Getting one pass through to a teammate per game may make you a ppg player but doesn't really mean you are a quality top pairing one.

Same goes for Draisaitl.. ended up with a point but he had plenty of unforced giveaways tonight while trying the low percentage cute shit
100%.
This kind of stuff usually starts to happen with more frequency when the team isnt playing very well. They get sloppy mentally (poor puck management...poor defensive zone coverage) and its really tough to watch.
The star players are front and center with this and the rest of the team follows.
That Brown attempted pass near the offensive blueline was a perfect example. Seattle scored as a result of that dumb pass attempt by Brown. You just cant try to make that pass...full stop.
There were plenty other examples too from Draisaitl, McDavid and Bouchard.
The lucky thing for them right now is that they have still beeen able to (in large part) win these games even though they arent playing well.
It wont continue....just a matter of time before they lose badly or lose a few close ones in a row. Unless of course they recognize how their game has slipped and turn things around. Thats not usually the norm for this team though.
A good ole fashoined ass kicking (or a string of losses) is usually what they need to wake up.

Usually when they are winning games like this in spite of themselves they require an ass kicking to get back into gear.

I hope that isn't the case, but we'll see. We have 5 games before the break with 4 of the 5 being against either good or desperate teams. Would be really, really nice to get at least 8 points out of those games, and taking 2 against the Red Wings will be a spring board to achieving it IMO.

This also suggests that Brown doesn't even watch the games? Just a side note. I thought it was funny too. I hadn't actually realized who was coaching the Kraken PP until the broadcast mentioned that. I'd ripped it a few times as well before realizing who was coach. Then I ripped it some more.

He's up in the press box during games so he wouldn't see or hear what the broadcasters are saying.

Team hasn't been playing that well lately and getting results still. KK looked almost anguished in recent games as the team got results in what were not good games played.

But man some of these opponents are expansion era level bad. Lets just park a player at Center ice and they won't even notice. The Kraken had to be next generation bad to even lose this game in regulation. The Oilers weren't bringing much effort or concerted play to this one. Seemed like several of our players were auditioning to spring J Skinner out of the pressbox. So kind of them. ;)

There were moments last night when I was saying to myself I'd seen WHA games that were better than this.

Games like the last two are almost always a chore to watch.

It's either a blowout or a closer game that is frustrating because you should theoretically be blowing them out.
