Durm
Stepan
Stepan* (6.5) + three Ranger 3rds in 2018, 2019 and 2020
for
Pesce (809.166 x 2) + Murphy (787,500 x 2) + three Cane 2nds: return of Ranger 2017 2nd, Canes 2nd in 2017 and 2018, + cap dump Bickel 4.0 expiring

* has NMC clause but does not become effective til next season, so defeated with this trade.
Rangers gain just under 1m cap relief, moving 6.5, taking on a bit over 5.5

Why: CAR has excess of D, Step is a solid add. For NY, Pesce is exempt from expansion draft [not believed that is impacted by how many games he plays], which enhancement is huge value add for Rangers. Murphy not exempt, but interesting RD add and surplus for Canes who just want decent value add. NY gains position on equal number pick swap surrendering threes for twos, but has to eat expiring cap dump.

That is aweful for the canes. Not only do we give up two of our three RHD, both cost controlled, but upgrade three of your thirds to seconds. No thanks, we'll content ourselves with watching your playoff window close soon without closing ours prematurely.

No freaking way.

Pominville has a worse contract than Nash and is less useful. Rangers can get out from Nash and get a decent return from him in between the deadline and next summer pretty easily. Adding Dumba isn't worth the extra year of money Pominville is getting.

Just looked up his contract. Yeah, you're right. No to Pominville unless they take Staal or Girardi too.

appreciate your vote, it is a big ask, but Stepan is like 20th best C in NHL.

I always talk about his defensive ability. :)

Last season, he really improved his defense. The season before he wasn't much of a defensive player, but last season he became so much better defensively, and was actually good defensively.

I think Miller is very good, but I think him along with a lot of younger players like Hayes and Kreider aren't very good defensively. Buch and Vesey both come into the NHL with reputations of being pretty good defensively where they had played, they could also struggle defensively in the NHL. Maybe they will, and in that case, Miller and Buch will both be bad defensively.

I'd like to see some improvements from Miller defensively. I think he could be a really important shutdown player, if he did. He takes FO's really well, he's physical, and he has good speed. He could be like Dubinsky, if he did improve his defense. Kreider improving his defense would also be good. Kreider on the PK could really create some odd man chances for us. Do you remember how many odd man chances Hagelin would get on the PK because of his speed?

Again, most people aren't billing Buch as the next Jan Erixon. They see him as that homegrown sniper that we have pretty much never had. Nobody is saying " I can't wait until Buch gets here to shore up the defense and penalty killing. Whoooo weee that is gonna be great!"

You are pretty much saying about Buch what I am saying about Miller, they came into their own last season.

Rangers defense...
LD McDonagh RD Girardi
LD Staal RD Klein
LD Holden RD McIlrath
RD Clendening
LD Skjei

RD Paliotta AHL
LD Summers AHL
LD Graves AHL
LD Gilmour AHL
RD Hughes AHL
RD Andersson AHL
LD Bodie AHL
RD Donnay ECHL
RD Zborovskiy WHL
LD Day OHL
RD Nanne NCAA
LD Reunanen Fin Jr.
I believe the Rangers have plenty of defensemen that could fill in on the top 4 role if Klein of Girardi go down to injury.

MN Would never do this. What is funny is the NYR fans saying that wouldn't either.

Really? Talk about homer glasses.

Value wise it's not terrible, but taking the extra year on Pominville who makes way to much and is an inferior player to Nash is an absolute deal breaker.

You say this like Poms is the main player coming back. Hello? We are getting an aged, expensive player nearing the end of his career and you are getting a 21 yo RH PMD with huge offensive upside( great skater, even better shot)who will be playing on your team for ten years to come. And he makes 2.5 M.

It doesn't matter if he is the main player or not. The Rangers can't take another contract like that at all. They can get out of Nash VERY easily. Pominville not so much. And the Rangers are very deep at wing even if they move Nash. Dumba is not the only available player and the Rangers look else where. Easy pass.
