While rightfully much of the attention this season was on Askarov would love to hear any impressions of Grosenick. Remember watching him in his Union College days (hard to believe he turns 36 this summer).

Seems like a good presence for a young goalie to have around - but if the playoffs are an indication looks like he can still play.

Josi got ripped off on the Norris when Makar won. Josi is like Hedman. Two best D men in the National League.
I see it as Hughes, Makar and Josi just on a different level. Plus, he doesn't have the talent that Makar ane Hughes have around them. Just an unbelievable player. Love Hedman too but he 'might' be starting to decline. Hard to tell because he's also not surrounded with the talent he used to be surrounded with.

Absolutely. He was a beast in the best possible way. I also enjoyed his Czech-speaking interview for Czech TV, cute how he answered if his Grandma is cheering for fellow Czechs or for Him :)

Oh does Fiala have some Czech roots? I didn't know that.

I'll admit something embarrassing and not related to the thread, but it's a silly thing. I realized just 5 years ago or so that Gretzky has some Czech connections as well, but it only makes sense when you start thinking of his surname. Janecky, Zidlicky and Gretzky.

If I'm not mistaken, both of his parents are Czech, and his Grandma is still living in Prague if I remember correctly she picked him up at the airport when he joined the Swiss team in Prague. On Gretzky's side, I frankly believe Gretzky has Belarussian roots. It's quite possible that the original name was something like Gretzki/Grecki (a kind of ending more typical for Polish, Russian, Belarussian)

I just want to say congrats to the Czechs. Three very gritty wins in a row against tough opponents. To do it on home ice where it clearly means so much to the fans is the cherry on top. As an American, I can only wish for that level of grit and determination. Some day....

Todays beginning of the celebration on Old Town Square in Prague, on the roof of the bus! It was totally packed there.

What a great day for the Czechs, fully deserved! :handclap:

I see that sign too, "Visit Czech Republic", do most locals still refer to it as such? Or is "Czechia" still trying to gain traction over there?
I don't know a single Czech that calls is czechia. This doesn't mean they don't buy I can't think of any.

That's true. His parents actually met in Prague and after that went to Switzerland. Kevin was born in Switzerland.

Dean Kukan's dad is also Czech.

Oh yeah, might be right on Gretzky. It does sound a bit like Czech/Slovak type of name though, at least to me who doesn't know the Czech language.

Interesting about Fiala too. Was there ever a debate on which country he would start representing or was it always clear that he'll be playing for the Switzerland?

I am no expert on Fiala but never heard anything about representing the country of his parents.

Czechia never tried getting traction over there. It’s simply an English translation of the word Česko a which for some reason the government wants the country to be known as abroad in Englis. The German equivalent (“Tschechien” ) has been used in Germany since 1993.

Ah.

Well, I'm going to continue calling it Czech Republic then, regardless of what the IIHF says.
