Oh I understand it very well I just don't see why that puts Germany in such a better position since players that are playing in the KHL are still not paid with bananas and a lot of Russian players were NHLers or are on their way in the NHL.

You don't think teams that are usually exclusively made up out of NHL players would fare worse?

Don't get me wrong, OAR played like crap today too and just for that Germany should have stuck it to them, but to pretend that Germany's chances to advance in the tournament didn't increase tremendously by the exclusion of NHL players is pretty dishonest.

There is a difference between missing 5 to 6 regular player and the whole freaking team.

If I had knows this was gonna happen, I would honestly have rather Germany lost to Sweden in the quarters than to lose in THIS fashion.

I mean, it would have been a lot less painful.

What a bummer for Germany. They threw that game away. penalty with 2 minutes left? It's just unfortunate. They were the fan favorites.

Russia had 15 players from St. Petersburg alone. They knew each other very well, longer camp, far better league.
It's not exactly like it was handed to Germany.

Because it's the olympics.

Take the olympic football tournament. It's a joke tournament missing most of the world's top teams and most of the top players, all the while bogged down by the gimmick of being a u23 tournament that allows a select number of over age players. Nobody puts much stock in who wins the olympics in regards to global rankings, but try telling the Brazilians or Mexicans that their gold medal doesn't mean anything because it wasn't "best on best".
It means something, I didnt say that.
I said I dont understand how anyone can equal it to winning when its best on best. Also its quite a big difference from the football olympics in that, in the hockey olympics, usually, atleast lately, it HAS been a best on best tournament.
People can think and feel how they like about it, I just know I wouldnt have cared nearly as much if Sweden won this tournament as when they won in 2006.

I really hate how the high stick only happened because of Datsyuk's stick and that's a penalty. The rule should be different IMO

Congrats to Germany for silver!

Yes. I thought that call was crappy. I understand it being called, but if he has a face mask on it's inadvertent.

What a crappy way to give the Gold away.

Terrible choice for the NHL to decide to not go to the Olympics only to have the IOC ban Russians and have them win! TOTALLY UNFAIR and of course SAD! KHL still went!

One sample out of how many? That headline was/is the epitome of German bandwagoning and a wonderful representation when trying to make a point about it.
If you want to talk semantics not sure if a messageboard is the right place since most/a lot of responses use a degree of hyperbole to make a point. If you take every word literal you'll be spending a lot of time trying to debunk every little word.

Hey, I'm no institution as to "who's the biggest bandwagoning country on the planet" , I'm only a single person who can offer you anecdotal (sometimes factual) evidence. Take it for what it's worth. I understand that you would feel personally attacked, but I'd be dishonest to claim that in my time in Germany I haven't observed some embarrassing bandwagoning that goes beyond simple patriotism.

Make of that what you will, in the meantime let's prepare for the Eurovision Song Contest....

As you lived here you should know, that this pope has been ridiculed by German comedians and press just as much and that the German curches are losing members year after year, no matter who was pope.

And coming back to hockey: you're not fighting against bandwagoners here, you're in a hockey forum. I have yet to see a German fan here, that was boasting like this toruney means, that Germany now was a big hockey country. I personally would be more than happy if the DEB team could follow up with a top 8 finish at this years World Championship.

Oh yeah, the IOC made Russia win, none of the other teams playing against Russia could in any way influence the already predetermined Russian win.

It was a freaking BILD headline. WHo takes that stupid paper seriously ?Only knuckleheads . Every once in a while you get one for free in the mail. It usually goes straight to the trash bin.

You missed where I stated it was one example (albeit a pretty representative one).
And sure, BILD is Germany's New York Post and Newsweek combined plus some hand and card reading in between alien abduction stories, yet it's the most read magazine (does it even qualify as newspaper?) in Germany.
While you and I wouldn't fall for those populist headlines more "common people" do. I'd even feel comfortable to say that about 60% of the people that stayed up today to watch their team play today have a subscription to that rag.

Again, congratulations to Germany for being second in this tournament, but as I said.. let's keep everything in perspective. All I'm saying.

Agreed.. they didn’t show Russia celebrate or any of the medal stuff.. what gives?

Russia didn't win anything. Olympic Athletes who totally by coincidence all happened to come from the same country which is Russia won gold. Silly.

If the 1992 Unified Team was a collection of future NHL’ers that was a cavalcade of multiple countries, this OAR team had a bit of a KHL mercenary feel.

Case in point:

So, yeah..there are some who read a bit too much into Team Germany's success.

All Germany needed to do to secure the gold medal was to play keep-away on the late 3rd-period powerplay. They didn't need to take any shots; they just needed to keep the puck on the outside and hold it for two minutes.

Instead, a series of dumb decisions, especially by Yannic Seidenberg, led to the Gusev tying goal. Dominik Kahun takes the first shot that gets blocked; Seidenberg then tries to force the rebound through the crowd, leading to the zone exit. He could have thrown it to either the player at the left half-wall or even back to Kahun.

Seidenberg then regroups and becomes the puck carrier on the next breakout; he gives the puck away on a dump-in. He should have just kept the puck, circled back and killed some time. The puck comes back the other way, and he ends up being the one who loses his helmet in the scramble, forcing him to leave the ice.

If Germany had just played a possession game on that shift instead of trying to throw the puck away, they would have sealed it.
