Also I think people need to stop mixing "bad defense" and "bad puck management" together.

Tonight's game was all about bad puck management and it extends beyond just this game. They've given up 3 goals on bad changes in the last 3 games on pucks that didn't get in deep after long shifts and a boat load of others on plays where someone turns it over and players are scrambling to get back into the play. That isn't bad defense, thats being dumb with the puck in your stick.

it was both. one goal schneider completely takes himself out of the play to hit someone which led to a 2 on 1 and a goal. Another Miller gets beat then completely stops skating and it allows a mini breakaway which ends up in the back of our net.

there was poor defense and poor puck management this game.

Do you know what started that entire thing? Not getting the puck deep after a long shift in which neither Wheeler and Lindgren couldn't win a 2v1 puck battle against a guy who was literally on his ass.

Bonino had a f***ing epic one for the 5th goal against (and Igor should have stopped this one.)

The team is beginning to miss Chytil and Kakko. At some point it happens. They haven't fallen off a cliff, but that level of play and the personnel gets you at some point.

Kakko wasn't playing great, but he was doing things that win games. He's going to get a chance with Kreider/Mika again.

That’s been a problem too but the neitral zone is clearly an area of weakness when defending.

Miller played absolute dogshit defense on the 1st and 3rd goals. Rangers F3’s were in Lala Land on the 2nd and 4th goals. Bonino made a stupid turnover at the blue line on an east-west pass and someone made a dumb change on the 5th goal.

It’s bad defense, bad puck management, and simply not paying attention that are killing us.

Offensively they actually generated good chances 5v5 but the lack of attention to detail on the other side of the puck is not a recipe for success.

That's just the norm for Trouba. He was never, never good defensively in his entire career and now he's just a glorified bottom pair D.

Schneider is dumb as rocks but I can't get on him too much since he's dramatically improved in almost every area.
never understood the Trouba trade from the start. why go out of your way to find a defenseman who cant play D?

well, the good is Laffy. ( that line as a whole on offense )

Defensive assignments have been blown far too often. Lazy/dumb defense.

Igor is not Igor bailing them out.

They scored in some phenomenal individual efforts fueled by lazy and dumb defense.
Igor is the first, second, and third reason they lost this game and the game to Carolina. Excluding tonight's EN goal and shot that created it, Igor has given up 11 goals on 52 shots in the last two games. A save percentage that starts with a .7 isn't it for a goalie that's not being brought to the rink by his parents.

And it's not on the team defense and shot quality. You could give up 52 straight breakaways and expect to give up about 11 goals.

Right now saves are just not being made, and they need to be. These big deficits allow teams to suffocate the game (especially Carolina), and more often than not kills the offense.

Short term the Rangers should be fine at goalie. Igor will oscillate between being great, average, and bad like all "good" NHL goalies, and we as fans can just hope we get the good and great at the right times.

Long term, you can't pay this guy. No goalie is worth any more than an average goalie salary.

Bonino is a 13th forward...his feet are too slow. We need to get Berard, Othmann and Sykora in games to see who can be a replacement
Not even a 13th forward at this point. Below replacement level dookie.

No I’m not going to shut up about Goodrow/Bonino. The team has a lot of problems but the easiest ones to fix are the clear cut liabilities in the bottom 6.
Honeymoon for Laviolette is over, he’s now making the poor forward depth issue even worse with his own lineup decisions. Wheelers playing over his head in the top 6, Bonino shouldn’t be playing at all, Cuylle/Brodz/Othmann playing 2+ min less 5v5 than Goodrow (who also shouldn’t be playing), same stinky D pairs.

I don’t understand how people will get on Panarin for not back-checking but give a pass to bottom 6ers that have a combined 2 goals and 9 points halfway through the season. No it’s not their job to produce lots of offense but it’s everyone’s job to occasionally give you something.

I just read that no goalie is worth more than the average goalie salary. I’ve tried to bring rational thought to this place but my brain officially broke.

Yep, both were very similar and poor awareness/positioning by the Panarin line. On Canucks 2nd goal I’m assuming they want Schneider to be aggressive on the wall defending the 3 on 3 and just have Lafreniere track back through the middle. The 4th goal was even worse as the forwards just gave up the easiest 3 on 2 possible and then Trouba makes it a 2 on 1 with one of his patented pointless hits. I can understand this line not going 100% defensively because they are playing a ton and need to conserve energy to carry the entire 5v5 offense but a couple plays in this game were just straight up dumb.

Also, Igor’s save percentage was something with a 7 in it? Shocked face emoji. I thought he had one of those 5 spot games with a perfect save percentage.

I just can’t believe the amount of goals Igor is giving up this year. 5 plus 7 times already?

Everything breaks down when u don’t get saves. Structure rotations gameplans everything. Don’t kid yourself everything turns into a fire drill when you fall behind 3 goals while dominating a game and can’t get a save

This guy needs to be way way better. Shesty is looking more richter than Hank when it looked like we had another hall of famer Periods of greatness but not entirely great. That’s fine if he gets hot at the right times like Mike would. But man he stinks right now. He’s more Kevin weekes than anything these days. Looks SMALL

We shuffled the lines around in the second and looked better, and then we kind of just went back to what we had and got worse again. That was weird.

Trouba didn't help with the most hilarious gaffe by a Rangers defenseman since the Dallas goal that Girardi is still backing up on.

Will Lindgren

a) Pass the puck to Kreider who is wide ass open

b) Flip the puck 20 feet down the ice to Quinn Hughes with his team already in the middle of a change

It’s largely as simple as this. Replacing two of Bonino, Pitlick, Brodzinski and Othmann (Goodrow and Wheeler are not sitting) with Chytil and Kakko will lead to much better possession and team defense than what we’re currently seeing.

That said, organizational depth is clearly thin and injuries are going to derail a Cup run unless they add at the deadline.
