Markstrom has been on the wrong end of a few of these this year and this was really softy of the season material to this point.

Softy of the night is this Josh Bailey goal on Erik Kallgren

Not only was the play a careless, pathetic and lazy puck handle by the goalie, but he still gets back into position in enough time to be able to stop the puck and gets beaten on a shot that should have hit him.

This goalie sucks so much. He’s an embarrassment to the position. What a chump.

Based on the expected goals stat I guess it’s expected that some of the goals would be of the stoppable variety? Bad goaltending is almost built into the game it seems to me.

Softy of the night is this Rasmus Kupari goal on James Reimer

Very interesting commentary by Jim Fox on here, that it was ''Not a bad goal'' but a ''Stoppable situation'' lol.

This might not have even been the softy of the night on Reimer. The Viktor Arvidsson goal earlier in the game was probably equally as bad, if not even worse. Drew Remenda on the Sharks commentary was really ripping him on these goals.

I would say some of them definitely are. One goalie that hasn't played in the league in a few years and I think he was only a full time NHL goalie for one year, who ALWAYS looked BAD on my percentages, but wasn't the worst goalie in the league by save percentage was Garret Sparks. Holy f*** this goalie sucked balls for the Leafs that year in 18-19. I'm pretty sure he had a heavily negative GSAx.

The guy would give up some of the softest, stinkiest goals, but I think he managed to stay above league average for the better part of the year in save percentage. I think it might have went down below average by the end of the year.

Dubas extended him to a multi-year deal in the middle of that season, but somehow he was traded to Vegas and buried there. He's played a couple of games as a third string call up in the league in the last 2 seasons before this, but that's about it since 18-19. I think I went through all my files for every year and tallied that the percentage of goals I've counted stoppable on him was just over 40%.

I was LOUD about how much this goalie sucked and it was one mediocre year with the Leafs, during which he was even extended mid-season and that was the end of him being a full time goalie in the league. Even though that 18-19 season was the only season he spent the entirety of in the NHL in his entire career.

I also remember FAMOUSLY predicting Koskinen and Rittich's downfalls early in the 18-19 season, when they were .925% over the first half of that season, with both plummeting (Koskinen more than Rittich) down to league average and below league average in Koskinen's case. I also predicted that year that Grubauer should see a progression in the second half after an .891% up to like January of that year and he finished with like a .915% or something.

I sent my 18-19 stats to a fellow poster that's a Sharks fan and he personally wanted to go through my data and compare it to GSAx and see if there was any correlation. From what he told me there was a correlation in goalies that fared poorly on my percentages, faring poorly in GSAx. I'm sure there were some deviations, probably Korpisalo haha. But that was just one season. He never asked to go through and compare in the seasons since and I really don't have the time to do it and check my work, as I'm too busy putting my own stats together.

If he or anybody else would like to, I still have EVERY season on file, including MOST of the playoffs.

Though my 2020 bubble playoffs files got f***ed up and I did a lazy job of editing my list and updating it, so that's useless. The 19, 21 and 22 playoffs are all intact, as are the entirety of the 18-19, 19-20, 20-21 and 21-22 regular seasons and everything to this point in the 22-23 season.

I thought Schmid's goal was stoppable considering he had a clean look from behind the hashmarks, although I wouldn't consider it a softy as it was a nicely placed shot.

I would very much like to mess with the data you have to see some things, mainly to see where the cliff that Markstrom fell off was.

I also would be interested to see if any opposing teams score a significant amount more stoppable goals than others, or if it’s just random.

Okay, normally I would give a stoppable goal on the one on Schmid. I've given them on deflections before, but the way that stick went flying (Haula's I think?) made me think that really changed the trajectory a whole lot. Just like the Nico tip on the 5-hole goal that beat him against Ottawa, though that was also from much closer range.

Markstrom is a weird one. I CLEARLY remember (maybe I'm wrong, you can find out when I send you the data) him not having a high percentage of goals I counted stoppable in 20-21 when he had a down year. The first year in Calgary. I had him for a higher percentage last year. I forgot if it was worse than my league average or not. It may have been slightly worse, but not way worse. This year, I think have him right under 30%. My league average for this year appears to be about 27.5% or thereabouts. Last year it was closer to 28.5%. It's seen an uptick in the last few nights, as I think it was around 26,5% just a week ago, my league average.

There are some deviations, like Korpisalo usually doesn't play as poorly on my percentages as his save percentage of GSAx. Jonathan Quick also doesn't, but it's an extremely easy answer as to why. He flops way too much, he plays A LOT of the game on his ass and these are goals that I can't in good conscience nail him for a ''Stoppable goal'' on, even though A LOT of them definitely are stoppable goals, due to way he plays them. That's why my stats are not infallible or to be taken as gospel. There's a lot of plays where a goalie will overcommit or flop or something and lose their net, and I won't nail him on that, but in all actuality, some of these are probably not good goals, due to the goalie's poor reads and guesses. Kevin Lankinen was like that last season. I don't let confirmation bias play a part in these, but if I see a goalie is playing poorly, but don't have him looking that poorly in my stats, I will start to pick apart what I think they're doing wrong, but I will leave it out of my own my stats.

Strangely enough, I do not have John Gibson down for a high percentage in any of these decline years. I kind of do this year, but he's also not my highest percentage in the league. It is kind of early and some goalies don't have an adequate number of games played yet, especially relative to what they'll finish with at year's end.

I think Martin Jones in 18-19 was mediocre or near average on my stats, but not as terrible as his save percentage. I think in the years since it's definitely gotten worse.

Anyway, you're more than welcome to pick apart my stats. I am about to run out, so I'll send them to you via PM if you'd like.

I just wanna caution, you may find them hard to read. Basically all they are is the goalie's name and a number, and that number is the number of goals I counted stoppable on them. If the goalie's name does not appear on my list, but he did play a game that year or even allowed a goal that year, it just means that I didn't count a goal stoppable on him. And I don't have save percentages next to the goalies or their actual goals against, as the league and every other stats site tracks those for me. The number is just the number of goals stoppable I counted on them for that year. So you'd have to go and look up their goals against/save percentages/GSAx and compare, as I never kept track of those.

Let me go through my emails and I think I can find the ones for 18-19 and 19-20 right now. As well as the 18-19 playoffs. I'll send them over to you in a few minutes. And then I'll send the other seasons in a bit after I come back home and eat something, as I have them on my phone, but it's gonna be a little harder to send them, as I'm not sure if I have to screen shot them or copy and paste and I really don't wanna lose them in the process, even though I think I have emailed them to myself also, just in case something like that happens.

It appears I also don't have the 2019 playoffs either. I think what must have happened with that was I think the email I used to send it to myself in was an email that was not active for a while and it deleted all my shit because I didn't log in for a while. Because when I go to it now, I can't find anything than past 2021. There's nothing in it past 2021 in the sentbox or inbox. And I first made that email address in 2005, I'm pretty sure. But I started using other ones and let it go inactive and you lose your previous shit after you do that.

And it's not in my other two email addresses either, even though both the 2018-2019 regular season and 2019-2020 regular seasons are.

I did the 2020 playoffs on my phone in my notepad, just as I've done with the last two regular seasons, but due to just being careless and lazy, I didn't properly edit the 2020 playoffs list after every game and those are pretty much useless. But I assure that I was on the ball with the regular season stuff after that. Even in my zombiefied 2021 season state.

Now, all the reviews were archived in the out of town scoreboard threads, so they're really not lost forever. If I really wanted to I could go back and read through them and collect the data again, but that's probably something for Christmas break or maybe the offseason when there's nothing else to do or no games to watch/track.

It'll be a pain in the ass, but very doable to just go through my posts in those threads from the Spring of 2019 and Summer of 2020. And I have done a review every single night from 2018-2019 through last night, including playoffs. I know I haven't missed a single night and when I did it was made up the next day. Like during my 3 day hiatus from the internet in February of 2020.

Playoffs are smaller sample sizes of games anyway though.
