I did a bit of rudimentary digging online about NHL refs and accountability. The best I could find is some insiders saying yeah everything is reviewed and there are consequences. But no one will let the public know.

So basically, yeah, refs are being held accountable, but we're not gonna tell anyone about it, you just gotta trust us. If that's not enough how bout a pinky swear and a boy scout pledge? Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Oh wait hang on, let me bust out my invisible typewriter.

I get the skepticism, but we've seen how refs are disciplined. They want to be refereeing deep into the playoffs, but the mediocre refs get cut.

Just because the NHL doesn't answer to criticism of the refereeing, doesn't mean they don't take it to heart. It reflects poorly on any league if a game is decided on a blown call. Some fans still talk about Hull's skate in the crease, Flames no goal vs TBay, Henrik's facewash. The last thing they want is a signature event messed up by a call.

Agreed. I really don't understand why Bains is getting so many gifted opportunities in the top six when it took forever and a day for Tocchet to finally move Hoglander up. Nothing Bains brings right now warrants it. The kid definitely has a future but not right now.
The Canucks bottom-six forward group was a nice story at the beginning of the year. But that was 'then', this is 'now'. And the well has gone almost completely dry.

We're now back to days where if the Canucks top four of Hughes, Boeser, Miller and Pettersson aren't scoring, the offense simply dries up. The reason they're moving Bains up in the lineup, is that they hope that by moving somebody else down, it will jump-start the third and fourth lines.

That's why we saw Miller with Joshua and Garland for much of the last game. Actually, I don't think Bains been too bad in the last few games. He's hard on the forecheck, and you can see that he has some skill and vision......although he still struggles with the pace at times.

But unfortunately this incessant line-juggling is a necessity, until either Lindholm gets back or until the bottom-six forwards start scoring again. Maybe reuniting Joshua with Garland and Blueger will do the trick.

Your Mother's House.
Kevin Pollack - 1999
Dan O'Rourke - 1999
Chris Lee - 1999
Eric Furlatt - 1998
Chris Rooney - 1996

Had no idea these guys were still around. I watch games on mute so never know who the refs are.

Rooney is a classic. O'Rourke too.

Really not much you can do in season. You have your crews selected and that’s who you run with. Don’t have spares to draw from until the next season when you can promote people from other leagues.

So long as the nhl is turning over the under performing officials with a couple to a few new crews each season that’s really all they can do.

Dont really care about finishing ahead of Oilers in standings. The last 8 games should be all about getting as healthy as possible and limiting the minutes with our superstars so that we start the playoffs as healthy and as fresh as possible.

Whether we finish 1st or 2nd in the Pacific, were gonna end up playing the likes of Vegas, LA, Nashville, St Louis etc... all of which i would put in the same tier. Vegas doesnt scare me simply because of their injuries and their lack of chemistry with the new guys.

Pettersson to me seems banged up, rest him.... Boeser needed to leave practice yesterday, rest him... Keep Lindholm out.

Lower the minutes of Hughes and Hronek to around 17 minutes a night. Dont rush Demko back. Cole seems over-used. Mikhayev certainly isnt 100%. Get all these guys as healthy as possible with some rest.

Then ramp it up with 2-3 games left just in time for the playoffs.

Who gets all their work short comings/areas of concern aired out in public though? That would make the referees a sideshow and put even more strains on their ability to to the job. Especially if the expectation is to grill them on every call. No wonder no one wants to be a ref.

If you don't trust they are reviewing and instructing the referees when they say they are that's some weird level of mistrust. Everyone gets reviewed in the workforce and rightly so.

With a max of 16 games in 1 night, I'm guessing that there are the equivalent of 18-20 crews to ensure enough coverage for all of the games.

In the PO, 8 series, so only half would make it through. Maybe they keep 12 crews to ensure that there is a backup ref in the event one gets hurt in a PO game thus they can continue on with 2 officials.

End of the day, are there enough officials that are going to graduate from the AHL, CHL, NCAA or even Europe that you can constantly be bringing in 3-4 new crews a season and turnover the officiating group of the poor performing ones that would be a clear improvement?

As far as I can remember it's incredibly hard to find enough referees at the amateur level. With all the abuse they get I would imagine it's a pretty undesirable job and not man keep going at the higher levels. You need to be a failed hockey player almost, still with considerable drive to make it, and keep up with NHLers. With the unreal expectations and consistently perceived slights it is highly unlikely turnover of crews would make some people happy. Maybe that's a good way to help improve quality though.

Yes sports fans are already incredibly hostile towards the referees, so any kind of league discipline and/or evaluation made public would just be fuel for the fire. It certainly happens but they just keep it internal.

Spent the day check out of my first resort and checking in to the second resort. Staying at Xcaret Arte. Might be the nicest resort I’ve ever seen in my life.

Watching the Canucks tonight. Missed a few games. Cannot wait.

Just to add to the refereeing conversation:

- is there an NHL team/fanbase that likes, loves, or applauds the refs?
- would you like for your son (or daughter) to get into refereeing as a profession, starting from the bottom up?
