If he had managed to pull off the rumored deal of Necas, Kotkaniemi, a 1st rounder and another top prospect (Morrow?) for Pettersson, he would look like a top 5 GM in the league right now.

And they easily could've signed Zadorov at 5M instead of Myers at 3M. Zadorov isn't having a great season but for 2M more, he would be a massive upgrade over Myers.

He just as easily could have looked like a complete moron if Pettersson went on to score 100+ points in Carolina. We also have no idea how legitimate that rumor was. Necas never showed he had another step like this either. It was a risk no matter what he did but it's hard to bet against an existing 100 point player over hoping the guy you acquire becomes one.

As for Zadorov. My bigger complaint here isn't that we allowed him to walk but rather replaced him with nothing. They went for the "by community" approach but seemingly vastly overestimated our players. I suspect they thought Juulsen would take a step and that Soucy was a legit 3-4.

Tocchets lost the room and all the facts are there to prove it.

Where are these facts exactly? Literally three days ago they flattened the defending cup champs and everything was sunshine and roses. One bad game later and they "gave up" on the coach? Come on.

Dismal is putting it mildly. Without Hughes, the D they dressed is in the bottom third or quarter in the NHL, at best. Clearly can't win with that.

As if it wasn't obvious

Good god were Brannstrom and Friedman dreadful. Any hope either one of them could swap to the right should be more or less dashed after last night. I know it's only one game but neither has looked great beforehand, particularly Brannstrom.

Bit surprised to see Blueger down in the dumpster.

Heinen, Hoglander, Desharnais, Soucy

Looks like this was a good one to miss. My son crushed it at his high school play, although the highlight was one of the singing Santa’s pants falling down during a big musical number. That was probably still more entertaining than this game would have been.

Nice to see Sasson score his first. Pity it came in a stinker, but awesome to see an undrafted kid score his first NHL goal on home ice.

Sasson has been excellent and deserves to stay in the lineup. He's another Sherwood.

There's some weird stuff happening behind the scenes with this team

Mopey Petey's disappearing act
Miller's mysterious absence with Elliott saying "his teammates need to bend and he needs to bend"
Tocchet appearing to get more and more frustrated every game and now saying some guys aren't emotionally invested
So many games the team just gives absolutely no effort, doesn't follow instructions, and just free skates however the F they please. That NEVER happened last year - it was balls out and adhering to the system almost every game

Other teams have crap D too and they still win (see: Oilers)
Wonder if it's less of a hockey issue and more an indication of some major off-ice issues
Exactly this. Don't understand how a vast majority here don't see something very very wrong in the room. Tocchet is the head coach. This is his responsibility. It's up to him to fix it!

I think Tocchet's job is safe. The team is 8th in the west with games in hand on basically everyone chasing them and ahead of them. The circumstances of the season and the hand he's been dealt, would another coach have them any better?

Yes there's been some games they've started flat, roster decisions i don't agree with, and some weird funk filling up the locker room but Tocchet is their guy and I think he's got a lot more leash.

He ain't going anywhere anytime soon. He has time to fix this. But he better get his act together soon for his own sake as well as ours lol.

I feel a part of this game was kismet. The universe's way of tying loose ends. 11 years ago IIRC there was a certain je-ne-sais-quoi in the air. I shit you not, I'm going here. But Rask got a knuckler in that game from Hansen I believe, to this day I believe the air pressure in the building was funky because of the storm outside but I may be wrong. I wasn't exactly with the living and breathing at this time.

Anyways, funny enough, I felt the same driving into work today. Just something weird about this weather system. Sure enough, Marchand gets a moment in the game to address the fans just like that game. I can't even be mad at this point. It's like a cockroach that you've tried to stamp out so many times, you're just kind of impressed he's still around. 5-1 loss in our worst game of the season, last time was 6-2 our best of the season (well, really mostly just Santorelli).

What this means for this season I haven't the slightest.

One of two marquee players will be done in Vancouver after this season is my unfortunate prediction. And I hope they make the correct but difficult decision.

@VanJack Jim is correct, but we are still a "playoff team". The undercurrent for catastrophe is here, but I'm actually for once optimistic in the short term. We're not kidding ourselves, we're a definitely true blue playoff team. But we aren't a "always bet on black" contender. Honestly just adding 1 guy if he's the right guy and this could be, talent-wise, not league-measuring-stick-wise, perhaps the best team the Canucks have iced...when healthy.
Uhhhhh

That’s gotta be one of the worst games I’ve seen in awhile.

I thought we were past these types of games.

I guess not.

They'll make a move soon, Aquilini can't allow this:

They raised prices significantly after one good season, and are playing like a team contending for Hagens at home. You can't charge Maple Leafs prices with Ducks quality home games.

The boys need to get back to their business-like mentality from last year. Getting crazy 2007/2008 vibes from the team, where you had Luongo (Hughes) playing like a Hart contender, injuries all over the place, people blaming the coach after they showed they're one of the best in the biz the year before, and management not addressing the big hole on the team (scoring for that team, puck moving for this one).

Heck they even did the same thing that off-season acquiring Aaron Miller (Forbert/Deshernais) instead of addressing the real issues

Hopefully this goes the way of 1994 instead, because this team has shown they can dominate when (a) the guys are all emotionally invested, and (b) when the blueline decides it's capable of making a 5 foot pass instead of icing the puck. Just gotta hope that Jeff Brown + Hedican trade is around the corner.

Tocchet did mention a flu bug was running around the locker room right now. Not sure if how much it did so against Florida, but it’s a potential modest factor here.

Looks like EP and JT cannot co exist.

Every time the camera pans back to all 3 of them, Scott Oake has moved another 6 inches closer to Kiefer Sherwood.

He started at the same distance as Ferraro and just keeps getting closer.

Weird old man.

I can't stand him and I'm repulsed when he's on. I can't even watch after hours because of him. He is the weirdest creepiest dude I've ever seen I think. Asks the most awkward, inconsiderate, and insultory questions. It's disgusting and I can't believe they allow him to continue. This is a company that also lets Ron MacLean and Kelly Hrudey act like donkey's all telecast so I'm not really surprised.

so naslund and bertuzzi, were apparently the best of friends and in the end dragged each other down

sedins and kesler, mostly coexisted in separate spheres but each did their own thing, sometimes with great results (1-2 punch of clockwork-like efficiency, then emotional surge), sometimes bad (neither could push the other when the sedins needed to shake things up or kesler needed to calm the f down)

before my time, but was there a gradin/smyl dynamic?

petey and jt… man idk

but maybe it’s all just a matter of who chooses the pump up song before they head out onto the ice from the dressing room and nobody has found one that everybody responds to….

Sounds like it was a good game for me to miss.

There is something off with this team - not sure what it is but they haven’t looked right since Game 1. That collapse has kind of foreshadowed what to expect so far.

Really feeling like last year was an outlier and this team is just not very good

I think it's just reality and the ride Canuck fans have been on the last few years leaves many confused at the state of the team. Really this team had so many questions about their ability last season they came out ultra focused and over-achieved. Now fans are expecting that we win every game or look great all the time. We're simply a middle to upper level NHL team and like most have flaws that need to be worked on. We're a playoff contender and how the rest of the season goes will determine our fate. Some games we look great and some are frustrating. Normal NHL ups and downs stuff imo.

In the hypothetical world that he has (which I don’t think is true), then you blow up the team. It would be three straight coaches it happened to in 4 years, which means you’re screwed no matter what.

It does seem like something is going on in the leadership group, as the business like attitude to every game isn’t the same as last year. Either Tocchet or the players will need to figure it out, otherwise someone needs to go.

Coach was also clearly screaming for help with puck moving when mentioning the icings and dump ins instead of making a play. He doesn’t want them playing rope a dope all the time, but guys are getting jittery out there at the slightest hint of pressure.

I don't think he's lost the room either.

Unfortunately I think our leadership group is simply weak overall. Hughes is obviously great but it stops there. Miller can be very good but we see the opposite is happening so far this year. Then there is Petterson who is not always present and focused. It also seems to me that he doesn't listen to his coaches or teammates as evidenced by his poor decisions on the PP and at even strength. Boeser is hit and miss and really doesn't lead by effort and example but relies on goal scoring to contribute. Sherwood is a great add in the leadership department but we also have Dak still getting up to speed and Garland stuck with helping that challenge as well. Add to that Hoglander, Raty, and Heinen who are likely not doing much talking and leading either. The d-core besides Hughes is awful although Soucy is stepping up in the last couple games. Not to mention Demko out and now riding Lankinen.

They just have to find a way to come together. Miller being back and hopefully getting up to speed is key for this group if we want to do any damage this year. I will also offer that losing Cole was a big blow as well. He was a big part of stability and compete on D.
