In a cap environment where the team isn't ladened with bad deals, Horvat is still a Canuck imo.

Even when not fully clear cap-wise, management tried to re-sign Lindholm (before anyone else iirc). Which meant they were willing to spend big on another centre. They just waited too long on Horvat and his in-season performance sealed the deal. That's history.

Good player and he is missed, especially on the PP.

Hope they start Silovs.

But to spend $8 mill on another C, probably not the wisest use of cap space. But, can only spend on guys who they can get to play here. Despite wanting a D, can they get one?

Lank will start. But, come the weekend with B2B, someone, either Silovs, Patera, or Tolopilo will need to start.

Agreed. I certainly miss Horvat on the Canucks. Just a quality person and a great captain of the team through mostly trying times.

But in a cap world, the Canucks could only sign two of Miller, Horvat and Pettersson. And I think they made the right call. Right now the Canucks have two players--Hronek and Raty from that trade--who are still contributing.

And you can't feel to bad for Hovat.....he immediately re-upped with the Islanders for $8m a season, far more than the Canucks could afford. In the end, it was a 'win-win' for everyone.

But you can't help wistfully thinking about what might have been if the Canucks still had Pettersson, Miller and Horvat down the middle. It would be 'killer'.

I think they could have re-signed him and resolved the defense. We can't forget that they attempted to re-sign Lindholm to a big ticket while Hronek was in house.

In a cap world, they tried to add Lindholm to Miller and Pettersson... There was no call to be made, they could have had all three. Negotiations went poorly with Horvat and the rest is history. Just too much bad money outside of the key players.

Hronek didn't come back in that deal.

Anyway, I hope fans don't boo Horvat. The comment he made is whatever.

I think his comment was pretty OK. Horvat was not in it to put the Orcas down, he just liked being able to play meaningful hockey for a change. The statement itself is a touch insensitive, but it was also factual - the organization was a complete shitshow and a circus under Commando Dimbo.

Not sure I understand any of this. They added Lindholm last season strictly as a 'rental'. There's no way they could have come close to matching the $7.750m he got from the Bruins through 2031.

The Canucks front office was saying all the right things when they acquired both Lindholm and Zadorov before the TDL, And they did make an attempt on Big Z. But in the end it was inevitable they'd both walk.

And without the conditional first round pick they got from the Islanders, there's no way they'd have been able to pry Hronek out of the Wings. So saying he wasn't part of the Horvat trade is just a 'technicality'.

I got the impression they had a price point with Horvat and I’m not sure they would have gone higher, even if the team had more room. Lindholm felt like the same thing. They entertained re-signing him, but I doubt they’d have ever met what the Bruins ultimately gave him.

horvat went from overrated here to underrated really quick once he was traded. he's a steal at that contract imo

Horvat is not a steal at 8.5M

He's a 65 point player that isn't that good defensively. He has the tools to be a PPG player but only if his team is offensively-oriented or he's playing with linemates that are better than him.

7M is probably more appropriate.

Having never been there I can't really speak on it, but I just do not see the appeal of signing long term with the New York islanders.

Especially after the first half of his career under Benning going no where.

I agree. You'd have thought that Horvat and his agent would have tested the UFA market over the summer.

But I guess they concluded that having given up so many assets to acquire him, Lamoriello and the Islanders could hardly let him go to free agency. And the long-term deal Horvat got was the best he could do.

But it comes at a cost. The sun is slowly setting on this Islander team. And there's no indication they won't struggle for years, with virtually nothing the pipeline. They're far closer to a compete 'tear down' and 'rebuild' than they are to the Stanley Cup.

Horvat isn't a dorky armchair GM like us and I think many athletes are over-confident in the abilities of them and/or their teams. I was listening to the SDPN today and they mentioned that in Mats Sundin's book, he talked about how frustrated he was in the 2007-2008 season because he thought that this awful team could somehow compete for a cup. Horvat probably saw a team that made two ECFs recently and thought he could get them over the hump.

It's also possible that Horvat's agent just gave him shitty advice, or he prioritized his family and living in a cool city over winning.

lol from who? Every single post in this thread has been more than gracious, I haven't seen a single slight against him.

People got a bit hot and bothered when it happened (driven by media), but I don't think anyone actually cares or dislikes Bo.

Second worst C in Canucks history. Never forget.

Say what you want about Horvat,
He gave his all during his tenure here.

He was the captain of a pathetically incompetent team,
didnt complain and just grinded.
Horvat deserves some damn respect for the aforesaid alone.

If it wasnt for him I probably wouldnt even watch the canucks during those awful years (who am I kidding I love this garbage team)

the most bo ever disappointed me was deciding to re-sign with the Isles and confine the rest of his career to those bums.

The Bruins offer came later on in FA.

Maybe they hit their max number with Lindholm/Horvat and just stopped. It's probable given their tendencies with other players. That said, it would have been prudent to hit that max with Horvat earlier in the offseason, where his ask was likely lower than it had been in-season. (They raised their offer in-season to compensate iirc).

The cap allocation for 3 high ticket Cs was something they sought, however.

As above: They tried to re-sign Lindholm to a $7m/7yr deal prior to the Bruins even having the chance to negotiate with him. Matching $7.75m AAV implies the Canucks and Bruins are competing for Lindholm in FA (not the case).

Could management have traded their own 1st (Willander pick) for Hronek? I think so. They didn't need the Horvat return to do it.

From all reports at the time, Horvat was class act on and off the ice.....one of the greatest Canuck ambassadors in the community.

And I know after he departed and was set to make his return to Rogers Arena, J.T. Miller was asked whether he thought the fans would boo or cheer when Horvat his the ice. His response: "I hope it is cheers, but if isn't, it doesn't matter. We know in the dressing-room what kind of guy he was".

And the thing is, Horvat desperately wanted to stay in Vancouver, But at the end of the day, you don't get very many opportunities to hit a home-run in free agency during a short NHL career.....where the possibility of serious injury is always present.

So he was traded and got the deal from the Islanders that he needed for him and his family. It's just the 'business of hockey', but no reflection on the quality of the man.

This is absolutely how athletes think. It's commendable of Bo in a lot of ways even if ultimately unrealistic.

As much as Horvat was well liked, his time with the Canucks was over.
He played the captain part well, served it well.
Hughes is the man now, as he should.
