Don't really get the Horvat hate at all - the guy was a true professional during some of the darkest days in Canuck history.

Personally I don't have any hate towards Bo at all.
But I think my feelings were more of disapointment than anything. Maybe it's not fair of me to think this way, but I feel a long serving captain of the team should have had more loyalty with the club and sacrifice a bit to win. His departure just felt so abrupt, and it all basically came out of him having a great season and contract negotiations falling through. If he didn't have 31g in 49 games that season, he probably remains a Canuck.
Really the same goes for Hughes in a few years when he's an UFA. We all know he can literally demand heaven and earth from Allvin and co. If he wants 14 million x 8 years, what is the team going to say, no? But assuming the team is still competitive, I'd love to see him sacrifice a bit for the team.
Horvat earned his bag, good for him. But for me that's the difference between franchise legends like the Sedins vs Bo. At the end of the day, had Horvat taken a 60 million contract from the Canucks (just hypothetical for argument's sake) instead of the Islanders 68 million, does it materially change his family's life in any meaningful way?

I feel the 360 turn around this team has had wasnt Tocchet alone, but could have been a locker room divide. As soon as he was shipped out the following season was night and day. New coach sure but arguably identical cast minus Hronek.
Maybe the media was just spreading bullshit rumours but. The guy never laid it all out on the ice like Miller does. Just coasted off being big and strong on his skates in the slot and getting a sick number of goals.
We was touted as a defensive two way forward. I am not pissed at the comment, but the guy was never the "Bergeron" model we knew he could be. And I think 8.5 is crazy for him. Where's the hometown discount? He suffered? What about us?
If the management was a supreme shit show that decade I think moving Horvat out was the final excorcism of it.

The rumor at the time was that the best the Canucks could do was a shorter term extension at $6.5m a season. He got seven years and $8.5m from the Islanders.
Frankly, Canuck fans who criticize Horvat for not swallowing a home-town discount to stay in Vancouver are out to lunch. You can't walk away from $2m a season. That's $14m over the life of his contract.
At the end of the day, that's why players hire agents. And no agent in his right mind would have recommended that Horvat accept such kick in the wallet to stay in Vancouver.
When the Canucks signed Miller for $8m a season, and knew they'd have to cough up at least $11m plus for Pettersson, the writing was on the wall. Horvat was a great Canuck...period, end of story.
1. The roster underwent to a significant overhaul.
2. The coaching team was entirely different.
3. The team had multiple bad cap hit contracts that sinked the team for most of the previous years.
(which Allvin disposed of beautifully without comprimising anything of significant value)
4. Petey, Miller, Boeser, Hughes, Demko, all had breakout years simutanously.
5. Allvin traded multiple picks at the trade dead-line for the likes of Lindholm, Zadorov, etc. to better prepare for the playoffs.
In view of the above, it is to no one's surprise that the team performed significantly better compared to previous years.
There is, however, no indication that the improvement in performance having anything to do with Horvat posing as a divergence on the team and/or the departure of Horvat.

Well precisely the fact he was stuck with an inept organization could've more easily sold him to Long Island.
Think about it. You get traded to New York. They are in the middle of a playoff push. You're on a competitive team for the first time in your career. You convene with an organization with real structure and management as they walk you around and introduce you to all your teammates. Those teammates are all in a similar age bracket. Then you're starting to talk about locking up 60+M dollars long term. You're a young family and you desire stability in what's a mostly tumultuous career choice. You then get linked up with a real estate agent that shows you the nicest neighbourhoods around New Jersey and Long Island. What if you blow your knee out and don't get the commitment on your next contract?
It's really not that difficult to understand why these athletes lock in to organization we consider mediocre as fans.

I'm still shocked that they let Bo go for a few reasons
First and foremost in a battle of the egos they sided with the headcase that butted heads with other players an management over the team captain and all around dream player
The dispute was over money. Shocked that they didn't bight the bullet and turn into the oilers or maple leafs where a few heavy contracts saddled the teams depth. That they already committed to Miller's $8m a year before Horvat's extension you have to think that Bo would want the same especially in light of Petey's.
As fans we learned they made the right decision. Management recognized Miller's compete and appreciated his calling his own players out. They understood him as something they could work with. Bo, on the other hand, was already doing everything they asked of him and more - two way forward that could score and had incredible compete.
On the other hand, but didn't start piling on the points until the contract dispute.
It's fascinating hindsight.
Personally, I think that like Luongo, Bo needed management to hold him back for his own good. That's not something a competitive sports franchise does easily though. Bo took on too much and the Captaincy was extra work he didn't need. I was hoping that it would have been given to Edler but that was not going to happen since they were pushing him to retire so bad.

I think Bains is a lot better than he was a year ago. But PDG / Lafferty production isn’t going to win you a job in the nightly roster if you don’t have any other utility besides being responsible.
He definitely is faster, more consistently in front of the puck instead of chasing, and more confident.
Given the leaps he’s taken y/o/y, maybe he has more offense in him come April. Who knows.

Glad they're able to get Joshua into his first game at home where they have last change. Should be a raucous reception when he gets his first hit of the season.
And are in a situation where they can play him on a 4th line and limit his minutes.
