I really like the decision to put Lekkerimaki with Miller and Suter. Could be a line with really good chemistry. Lekk at his best plays an F3 role very similar to Boeser in finding the soft spots on the ice, although Lekk is stylistically a bit different and has different tools to score.

Could be fun to watch him in the near term as I doubt teams will be respecting his shot all that much to start. Where Lekk differs from other shooters on our team, is his ability to get his shot off from anywhere on the ice: off mediocre passes, off balance, off time, mid stride--anything goes. Petey is super picky with passes and needs it on a tee, Miller and Boeser by contrast are pretty good, but Lekk is on another level with this IMO--nimble in shifting his balance, doesn't need much wind-up, and can have his feet in all sorts of positions and still get an accurate and whippy shot off. He also likes to set up for the one timer by skating backwards away from the incoming pass, which gives him more ability to adapt to the position and timing of the pass (while changing the angle for the goalie and defense.) All this contributes to why he is such a high volume shooter, and if he continues to generate a lot of rebounds now against the better NHL goalies, Miller and Suter will be having a good time down low.

First game of a harder schedule over 8 days they play 5 games with one scheduled loss in there, back to back but one of the easiest to have scheduled, at home.

Flames played pretty good last night.

I don't think Lekkerimaki will get that much icetime, not great defensively or as a forechecker and with Miller being "off" he can't play behind the play like Boeser does. Maybe on the PP he can fill in for a Boeser one timer and the PP does seem it has transitioned of the left side for one timers so he might get some looks there. Maybe showcasing him for a possible trade.

Canucks should win easily but watch out for that 3rd period surge of the Flames

A very important week (8days)

Tonight’s Game
  • Had a couple of good days of practice; worked on a few things
  • Flames are in the 2nd night of a back-to-back; expect the Canucks to have a lot of energy tonight
  • Need to stick to the gameplan and be aggressive right away
  • Flames are a fast team that use the weak side a lot; look like a team that’s connected
Bains
  • Will slot into the 4th line with Hoglander & Raty
Joshua
  • Good shot he plays Thursday; trending in the right direction
Boeser
  • Nothing to report
  • With his injury, you hope he’s getting 3-4% better every day
  • Can’t confirm whether he’s in concussion protocol; says he doesn’t know but will find out
Goaltending
  • Lankinen starting
  • Silovs has to play; has had a couple tough starts; practicing his but off
  • Silovs is a possibility for thursday; can’t just have him sit on the bench
  • Have had a somewhat light schedule but need to make sure Lankinen is fresh
  • Thought it was too much of a turnaround to play Silovs in this game and Lankinen deserves to get back in the net after the last game
NHL Debuts
  • Doesn’t like to throw too much at young players
  • Will go over some system stuff but wants to let him enjoy the day
  • Hughes, Miller, etc. show Lekkerimaki the ropes
  • In a 2-on-1 drill Lekkerimaki tried to pass and Tocchet told him to just
Shoot; be a shooter tonight
  • Didn’t have a solo-skate when he was a rookie
  • Wants the young guys to have fun; don’t think too much and go to the right spots
  • Would like to see Lekkerimaki with the puck; wants to see him make creative plays and, obviously, smart plays
Abbotsford System vs Vancouver System
  • 85-90% the same
  • Doesn’t want 100% the same; wants Malhotra to be his own coach and have creativity
  • For d-zone coverage and neutral zone forechecks should be the same
  • Can learn from Malhotra and incorporate his ideas
  • Important to communicate with the AHL coaching staff
Football
  • Played football in his second year of highschool then was told to choose between hockey and football
  • Was not a bad football player
  • Played safety; describes himself as an “Ed Reed type of guy"

Canucks Army and Sportsnet have highlight clips up on their sites with a loop of Lekkerimaki's shot selection in Sweden and Abbotsford.

My reaction.......you have to be kidding! He'll shoot from anywhere. One timers, wristers from the sideboards and slappers from the slot. And he shoots to hurt. It's such a heavy shot it fells d-men who block his shots at their own peril.

He was on a record pace for shots on goal in the AHL. No wonder Tocchet's advice tonight was 'just shoot the puck'. So many goals are generated from simple shots on goal, generating tips and rebounds. And Lekkerimaki is going to give goalies fits, even if he doesn't light the lamp tonight.

Been a long, long time since a Canuck rookie has made such an anticipated lineup appearance. You might have to go all the way back Bure.

No excuses with the Flames on a back-to-back.

Hoping Lekk has a terrific night with his parents flying in to watch him. The team, but especially the defense, needs to really step up for Lankinen tonight. They owe him.
