A top five guy should be starting for you in 2020, a top 10 guy by 2021 at the worst.
That has value in two ways, not only another starter with great upside, but the option to move another player in trade and also clear out cap room if needed.
The object is not to make the playoffs in 2019, but to build a dominant team that can compete for a Cup for a decade. You rarely get a shot at a top player in the draft, so you never trade them.
Making the playoffs is most definitely a goal. The part where we compete for a Cup for a decade needs to start now, not next year. You might as well go for it while your best players are in their prime.
