Not certain but I’d be surprised if they were ever team employees. Has conflict of interest written all over it.


I certainly believe you are right that they are employed by the league. But why would it be a conflict of interest if they were team-employed? They don't judge anything. All they do is let the player know that the penalty is about to expire and open the door.

Because they could say something to the player to piss them off on purpose. Or relay information that the player was saying to the other team. Or opening the door just a tad too slow. Not that it's likely, but yeah.
 
Interesting question to ask fellow fans... Is Kopitars season more surprising or browns?
