Guys are trying to score with the goalie pulled, not be forwards skating down to the goal line because a defenseman is playing goalie.

"Twenty seconds". Can someone time it? That seems like hyperbole. All of you are reading too much into this play.

I don't necessarily care that he threw his tantrum, I just want him to channel that into something positive. If you think he slammed the stick solely because he feels like he busted his ass and everyone else gave up, you are being just as emotional as Doughty.

He sees the season slipping away. It's a three consecutive loss. They got robbed of a point in TB, got clowned in Carolina (Doughty especially) and now another one. He's frustrated.

So he shows it. Fine. Go back it up next game by taking over like we all know he can.

You're seeing what you want to see because that's not the reality of what happened. Players usually convene towardstthe middle to get bodies to the net since the goalie is out when have you ever seen a player leave the crease open when the opposing team is making plays in your zone.

He can't. It's not possible. He's only one player. Him and Kopitar are the whole team right now.

There's a few other guys that make some nice plays here and there, but the Kings are a two person team, and you're not going to win much of anything with that formula.

Doughty has played more minutes than any other defenseman in the league. Kopitar has played more minutes than any other forward in the league. And they're playing hard minutes too. It's not like Crosby and Malkin where they don't kill penalties or don't have to play below their own goal line and get all the offensive zone starts.

You can just see the frustration building. This team just doesn't have the depth it needs. Way too many guys not contributing.

Problem is what is competing to Luc and Blake?
Do they think this is competing?

I’m sure Luc does, which is scary.

Blake is too cagey to get a good read on thus far. We’ll learn a lot about him once the deadline passes.

If he goes out and buys, we’re in deep shit, because that means we’re only at the event horizon of this black hole. If he actually sells off some dead weight, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. If he stands pat, I suppose more will be revealed over the summer.

Someone in that office needs to see this team is going nowhere fast. But that’s the scary thing: it’s an old boys club up there now. If we squeak into the playoffs and get smashed in round one, Luc will probably give himself a big pat on the back.

The team is still learning how to play together, yes, you have Kopitar, Brown, Pearson, Toffoli but look at all the new faces, you have Iafallo, Brozidnski, Amadio, and before the trade, Ladue, Gravel, etc, what I saw last night and granted it was one of few Kings games I get to watch these days, was a team that played well, but at times they were lost, they were missing a helluva bottom six player in Lewis, a top scorer in Carter, and they played well, the third period was a disaster, but overall they played fine.

Everyone on here is over-emotional, it's either they team is great, or oh no they suck time to burn it down, there is no middle ground here, and that's amusing and frustrating as well.....yes you want the team to do well, but man, you guys have the patience of a gnat.

Have to follow the example set by the best player. Win, and everything is good. Lose, and you start sniping. Fans clash more in opinion. Players start pointing fingers.

Yeah, winning is better.

Kings miss Carter for sure. As a Pens fan, Kopitar playing Sid on the ice was fun to watch. Kopitar is very good and is probably closer to Sid as a 200 foot player than anyone else in the League. Team played hard but lack the skill to make those game changing plays. Quick was really good, has some big time stops as well. You need more speed and skill.

said 15-20 if you want to be a smartass about it. soon as that puck gets past muzzin it has to be a clean break back to get a man, you don't need to be coached that as an NHL player. my replay turns on at 0:36 when malkin is crossing the blue line, puck enters the net at 0:24. such hyperbole of maybe 2 or 3 seconds holy f***!

iafallo (props to him for being the first forward back) even though he loafed it a bit, lost crosby near the net and that's his fault

kopitar and brown barely even made it to the slot and were both purely looking to turn up ice while staring at an uncovered malkin, while the puck never left a pittsburgh stick.

the team quit on him.

There were a couple of Sid-Kopitar shifts that were battle royales, it was great. Kings couldn't take the puck, but Pens couldn't really take it to the net, either. Would have been a more enjoyable matchup if we would have gotten a point out of it, but it was cool to see them grinding each other down.

This isn't a deep enough team to be missing guys. You say we need more speed and skill but we're missing a heap of it in 60-point Carter and Trevor Lewis who is the bottom six lynchpin. Other than that I like our team speed in general now, no slugs. Missed LaDue's skating on the back end last night though.

I missed most of this game. How did Phaneuf look? I know it is only the first game in a new system but did he look as slow as Ott fans claim?

You and others are getting caught up in the optics of a tantrum.

I'm notorious for questioning the compete level of this team for my entire tenure on HF. I am the guy loudly booing at the games when they put up a 2 shot second period. I don't make excuses in the effort department.

I'm more concerned about the lost board battles all game (season) than I am about a f***ing empty net goal being scored. If Doughty doesn't freak out, there isn't five pages of this garbage. Since he put on a show, it's now a "thing" whereas it would be nothing if he didn't throw a fit.

When I say I want him to channel that, I'd like to see him throw a big hit or something. You want to hit something? Go do something during the game that will maybe spark this team instead of freaking out when the game is over.

This team is much more of a joke without him, I get it. I'm not ungrateful and know what he means to the team so I'm not a "hater" or anything, but it is a little rough to have a guy continually bring up needing a veteran presence while he puts that show on last night.

I love his desire and have been on record in the past saying that he should wear the "C" due to him being more vocal, a fiery competitor and the best player on the team: it's actions like last night though that show he is still immature and not the right choice for that yet. Glad he is upset they are losing but burn the team down in the locker room like Carter did last year and then come out against Buffalo and set a tone immediately.

I don't want to hear about needing more of a veteran presence from him: I want him to grow up and be a leader of men. He's got all the talent, experience and desire to be that guy; he better start doing it once he's making $12MM a season.

I think some us are still sour about that Doughty quote from a few years back about needing the veterans to show up. I've read nothing but praises and compliments about his leadership role this season. We don't know what's going inside the lockeroom to really judge his character therefore I'm going to take the coaching staff and the players word for it. It sounds like's he's finally growing up, he still gonna have his tantrums but I think he finally accepted the responsibilities that weigh on his shoulders.

I hope this Doughty talk hasn't spiraled because of his recent quotes about Dion which were taken out of context here until somebody posted the entire quote.

One thing Karlsson has over Doughty is that Karlsson carried Ottawa to the ECF last season. Not saying Doughty was a passenger in 2012-14 but he wasn't the driving force of the team either. Karlsson put Ottawa on his back last season with a broken foot and almost got them to the SCF. Doughty just whines about how he deserves the Norris the last 3 seasons while his team win 1 playoff game. Couldn't believe he was whining about deserving the Norris last season a couple days after his team's season was over. Love Doughty's emotion but the guy is not a leader.

Get out of here with this revionist history. The Doughty- Muzzin line was one of the PRIMARY reasons we were able to come back against San Jose, where he was integral in reducing chances.

Drew Doughty has led the Kings comeback

From the article:

"The Kings and Sharks have played an incredibly even series after 6 games. Both teams have won 3 games. Both have scored 21 goals. The Kings have only the slightest edge in possession as they’ve owned 51% of all attempts at evens.
Three games ago the series seemed pretty far from close, yet the Kings have clawed their way back in it one game at a time. And the biggest reason they’ve been able to do so has been the play of Drew Doughty.
Through six games, Doughty has played in 40% of all of the Kings even strength ice time. In that time, they have owned 57% of all 5v5 attempts with Doughty on the ice. Without Doughty, that number falls precipitously to 49%.
That is while facing some pretty tough competition.
Doughty has spent about 70% of his even strength minutes on ice against the Couture and Thornton lines.
In addition to Doughty’s stellar possession numbers in those tough minutes, his on ice scoring chance numbers are even more impressive. As a team, the Kings have only owned 41.5% of all scoring chances at even strength*. An astoundingly low mark. Yet, when Doughty’s been on , they’ve owned a much improved 54% of the chances.
The Kings biggest problem over the first few games was allowing an incredibly high amount of scoring chances. In fact, they allowed over 20 chances in each of the first four games, which was the first time they allowed that many chances in four straight all season.

In the Kings 3 losses, Doughty had rough numbers as LA was out-chanced 12 to 19 with him on the ice. Since then, however, the Kings have out-chanced the Sharks 16 to 5 with him on. That’s right, 19 chances against with Doughty on ice in the first 3 games. Only 5 chances against over the last 3 and that’s in 61 minutes of even strength ice time.

Agree that they don't win without Doughty.

He had Smythe talk heading into the Rangers series and was dominant in 2012.

Just because he had a better supporting cast than EK doesn't make him a passenger nor a driving force: he's the best defenseman on two Cup teams.

Does it seem like the Kings have gone from being one of the toughest teams to play against and one of the more physical teams in the league to becoming one of the softest?

They seem to be less engaging in physical battles or causing or initiating scrums. They're not as rambunctious in front of their own net or in front of the opposing netminder.

Hell, I can't even recall the last time the Kings dictating the pace of the action and an entire game for all 60-minutes. This team seems to have lost its soul. They have lost their identity. Which is exactly what this team used to be prior to 2009: a team with no identity.

The Los Angeles Kings are simply mediocre, at best.

Not a huge fan of Doughty's outbursts when calls don't go his way, but I have no problem with him calling out his teammates. He should do that. Just not on the ice during a game. Can't say I'm a fan of that. Locker room, practice, all good.

We saw him, on camera, tell Carter to shut up when it looked like he was trying to calm him down after he was going off on a ref. That sort of thing, eh, but not a fan of airing dirty laundry during a game.

I'm sure it's not going to matter at all. His teammates will be ok, they're big boys. They probably totally get what Doughty was pissed about. I'm sure they know they half-assed it. I hope whatever Doughty was doing works. If they win 6-0 tomorrow, and win every board battle, give Doughty all the credit for waking them up.

People get paid and get old. Brown can't fly around hitting everything anymore and none of the kids have any jam to them: especially on defense except for MacD. Actually, Kempe has a little edge to him but the following are all Sallys:

Forbort/Gravel/LaDue/Brodz/Amadio

Andreoff doesn't make any impactful hits and generally loses his fights.

Then you've got 73 and 70 losing puck battles when that used to be a strong part of their game: especially 70.

Since December, it's pretty much been #11 and #8 carrying this team and, even then, they weren't putting up goals with any regularity. Once #32 faltered, you see the results of a team that is top heavy and not constructed well.

I've been saying this team was a paper tiger since even the win streak in November, but even I'm getting annoyed by all the whining around here.

If you expected the Kings to be anything but a bubble team this year, you were going to be disappointed from the start.

If you expected the Kings to completely blow it all up, trade away all their assets and start fresh, you were going to be disappointed.

If you were expecting this team to be able to retool on the fly in one year, making amazing trades and fleecing everyone, you were going to be disappointed.

Blake and Luc were VERY VERY VERY clear about what this year was and what their goals are. This is a building year; they brought in youth, trying to get them acclimated, and trying to make playoffs. They will not trade the farm, they will not trade off core pieces. THEY'VE ACCEPTED THE BLACK HOLE.

Anyone who could look at the number of times we've been out shot and outplayed during the beginning of the year, look out our absurd goaltending numbers, and think we were a contender, I'm sorry you got the wrong impression.

This team had a hot streak while all their competition did the opposite; now the reverse is happening. If we were a fully healthy team with a full season of Carter, it was still a MAYBE we made playoffs. The fact that we've stayed in the race at all with KEMPE as our second best center is astounding.

There is only ONE THING THE KINGS WILL DO AT THIS POINT: they will make small trades, build their prospect pool, and try to make playoffs.

False. Luc promoted a contender and not a building year.

How many of Doughty's teammates have tuned him out? The answer to that question would be interesting.

Great player, but probably needs to exhibit a little more maturity at this point in his career.
