Count me as one that didn't think Tocchet was joking, even though he tried to save it as such. I don't know if he's really annoyed with the Petey questions specifically, or if there was something/multiple somethings about the game that had him frustrated. But I think he was frustrated in that moment.

Is there any stats on "board and out" plays by our defenseman? We must lead the league in that. Or icings which are not good when we are not very good at faceoffs.

He was definitely annoyed. I also thought the Sherwood question before that was funny, "what does Sherwood bring to the team?"

How many times can you ask the same questions?

It seemed more like frustration with the team/season in general rather than the actual line of questioning. Rare to see that from him.

I bet Hughes’ numbers with our fourth line are equal (if not better) than our first lines numbers with the bottom 4 (on aggregate). Should give people some perspective on how bad the d is and just how badly they’re tanking everyone else’s results.

Soucy and Myers aren’t fourth liners, but their results without a semi competent PMD are just brutal this year.

While management deserved credit for the Soucy/Zadorov/Cole deals last year, they deserve equal blame for putting together this tirefire behind Hughes this year.

To put in perspective how bad a 42% ES Corsi is, we’re farther behind Chicago (44.5%) than they are behind Vegas (46.5%). It would be the worst figure in the league in the last 10 years outside the 2014/2015 Sabers, and no one else is below 43%.

It’s why I keep calling the situation untenable - I don’t know how the forwards are supposed to do anything other than defend when the defense can’t pass, or how Tocchet is supposed to coach any sort of offensive gameplan.

I think their hands were pretty much tied just like last year. It was wise not to pursue expensive defensive help to the detriment of our cap space, prospects, assets, and future. Sometimes you just have to be patient in the NHL. We can still pull off a trade if the team continues having success this year. Otherwise our defence is a next 2 years project. Besides shite Zadorov I don't know who else we could have targeted that would have even considered Van, we could afford, or would make us dramatically better in the way you suggest. Who would you have tried to bring in?

I admit I only read thru the first half of this GDT but I feel a lot of negative over reaction about this season so far vs last. Here are some facts before we go too overboard:

- 11th place overall in the league
- star forward has missed a chunk of season
- star goal scorer concussed and missed a chunk
- #2 defender injured

Id include star goalie injured too but the backup has done such a good job it would be dishonest to add that on

Considering all these top of the team injuries the team is still in 11th. Closer to the TDL you know management will be addressing the obvious shortcomings on defense.

So lets all take a deep breath and enjoy some ice hockey. And always remember:

Man I love this team :yo:

Demko
  • Looks big in net
  • Thought he did a great job tonight
I'm not sure a save % of .840 is "great" by anybody's metric. He was OK, especially after such a long layoff, but certainly imperfect. First goal was not good. The team played like they thought Silovs was in net and his numbers reflect that. He should remain the backup until either Lanky goes cold or if Demko gets red hot but I suspect that they make him the #1 before Christmas...

At this point might as well play Petterson's line every time Hughes is out, with the odd Garland's line thrown in once in a while. Load up Hughes's minutes with our teams 2 line drivers, and hope it creates enough offense to offset the rest of the team. Playing anybody but Hughes with Petey is just a waste, nobody on a backend and make a pass.

Almost every time a D, one not named Hughes, gets the puck in the D zone it's glass-and-out or pass it into the forward's skates, or iced it. How do you generate offense with that kind of transition plays?

Allvin really need to decide what to do with this season right now. I get he want to see this team healthy first, but at this point if he wait like a month or 2, we could really fall right off the way the team is playing. Feel bad for Hughes, what more can you ask from him?

Just throwing this out there! How is your depth on the wings? Blues need all kinds of help up the middle. Not sure how your depth is down the middle, but a Kyrou + trade for Elias interest the Canucks at all?

Not for me. I like Kyrou but we are in no position to give away a top 6 (top 10 in the league??) center. We can't replace him in any reasonable fashion and we're not going to rebuild.

1) If the puck didn't bobble over Garly's stick on the PP leading to Thomas' goal.....
2) If the Blues didn't get that phantom PP........

Could have been a different result last night, maybe not. Them's the breaks. Last year at this time, we were a healthy team that could weather the breaks.

Joshua is starting to return to form, Demko made some incredible saves, Petey & Debrusk are now a tandem (unlike start of season), and Miller is hopefully back with Boeser on Thursday or Saturday.

Hronek is a major loss, for which Hughes is doing his best to compensate. Until we get some D help, we'll have to rely on GOALS, GOALS GOALS, and terrific goaltending.

OT goal...sure a bad play happened before then but in no way should Soucy be letting Holloway have a clear lane to the net. Soucy backed away to give him that lane instead of aggressively taking the man and eliminating the chance. It was a 2-on-3/2-on-2 and Boeser had his man on the backcheck from the Blues blueline on so playing the pass shouldn't have been a primary concern.

Also of concern is how SLOW Demko looked moving side-to-side at times last night. I would expect some rust on rebound control etc but I was not expecting him to struggle moving in his crease. That to me is a concern worth monitoring. I really hope this isn't a Tuukka Rask part 2 where he tried to come back for a few games and is forced into LTIRetirment (I realize Demko is much younger). Maybe reading too much into I just imagine that quick side to side movements would have been concentrated on during his recovery. Perhaps it was simply rust on reading plays and players.

He was definitely frustrated and then tried to make nice at the end. But I would be frustrated as well. Constant questions about one player. It's almost like he was begging the media to please ask him about something else like the terrible defense!

All I can say, is that it's lucky for those reporters that Torts isn't still in town. He'd have gone off on them like Mt. Pompeii.

I'm pretty sure that for almost every NHL coach, those post-game media scrums are about as anticipated as a root canal. The only guy I can remember who seemed to enjoy them was Boudreau.

And it's one of the reasons why players and coaches love being in 'Sunbelt Cities'. They're lucky if they if they have one or two reporters covering the team; and by-and-large the public at large doesn't much care--particularly in the middle of an NFL/College football season.
