This is the first time I’ve ever seen Hughes that low, almost dead last. Cant say I disagree.

I’m amazed how damn accurate this chart is with the eye test.

I'd say minus the nuance, and on a macro scale, it lines up 90% with my eyes. I can't speak to how it measures the small details to make up the whole, but the whole is very accurate.

Looked like he was stunned for a second there that he hit the post, but once he realized it he busted back hard. Sadly, he's not the fastest guy to begin with.

These are professional athletes, so going from a mindset of "f***, I hit the post!" to "oh f***, I gotta go back!" in under 1 second is incredible. Some guys I play takes them a solid 3 or 4 count to get there. By then, it's a moot point to even try. As pointed out, a guy with a stronger stride would have no problem catch him and I think it's admirable Brock nearly had him.

Yeah, I don’t necessary blame because it’s really a split second difference and the reason he couldn’t catch up had more to do with his lack of speed. I just noticed it wasn’t an immediate back-check.

Let's hope that playing Hughes 27 minutes a night for the next 8 weeks isn't going to break him as well.

Cause it broke Drew Doughty, Scott Niedermayer, Duncan Keith, Chris Pronger? The list goes on.

Hughes is 8th in average TOI with 24:57 and the top 40 all have 23:00 or more.

These big minutes are very normal - just here to tell you that you can relax on the wear and tear fear of Hughes. He is a special player that can handle these minutes.

All my fears have now been taken away thank you so much. I always knew that Hughes was exactly like Big buff or Chara or Pronger.

Considering the competition and being at the end of a road trip, it was a hell of an effort. Minny is physical and skates hard and the Canucks kept up.

Surprised Hoglander did not get benched after kind of getting walked on the point with about 10 minutes left. He was even out in the final minute. Found that interesting.

Did not like Pettersson's game outside of the net battle that led to Debrusk's goal. Thought he was a liability defensively, especially in transition.

Not a perfect game from him but thought Soucy looked good overall, seemed confident.

Joshua is skating and fore checking well but hasn't been able to be dangerous around the net. Him and Garland both look good individually but haven't been able to recreate that magic yet.

Suter and Debrusk continued their strong play.

For all the negativity Soucy is getting on the boards here he was excellent. Absolutely rose to the occasion and took charge both offensively and defensively. A great game from him.

I found the one play enthralling when he and Boeser had the puck on the half wall. Boeser kept force feeding it to him in tight space and I was expecting a break down but he handled it excellently which lead to a big goal. Awesome stuff.

Is that what I said? I used Doughty, Keith and Niedermayer as examples.

It just doesn't really seem like Hughes is getting overworked for his pedigree and ability. These are normal minutes but I guess if you have to be sarcastic to sound smarter you are free to do so.

Supports the eye test - I thought Soucy had his best game this year. Seemed really engaged and fed off the physicality. Also thought Juulsen was very strong. Took some big hits to make the safe play. Guy is a warrior.

Lines up for me, Hughes was struggling against the Kaprizov line, and its one of those games where not having Hronek really hurt him. JT Miller's absence was also really felt here as well, as usually he's the matchup guy who makes things difficult for opposing top lines.

If you look at the first goal against, I'm pretty sure Hughes swings that back to Hronek instead of holding it for so long there if it's him at the point instead of Myers.

You can also see the Wild really keyed in on Hughes on the forecheck - they were hyper aggressive at times, sending one guy directly at him and another almost in a "QB Spy" role that you see teams employ against running QBs in football. They had zero respect for Myers on the breakout, and for good reason.

If they tried to do that with Hronek playing, its a quick pass d to d, and then an easy breakout pass/carry the puck up the ice for Hronek. Good thing is there is a long-term solution here, problem is if other teams watch the film here and start doing similar things (might not have the personel to execute it though).

Is it normal? In the last decade there have been 8 times a defencemen has played over 27 minutes a night in the season. Doughty, Suter, Karlsson, Big Buff.

There hasn't been a sub 6' defencemen to play over 27 minutes since like Brian Campbell. Last time Makar played over 26 minutes, he played 60 games that year.

Hughes is a special talent but he's not Doughty. Hughes takes a lot more punishment than he gives out.

Wild are a dirty bunch - also was underwhelmed by how they played.

Expected the Canucks to get blown out tonight

I thought it was excellent hockey. One of the best games if not the best actual hockey I've seen all year. Fast paced, constant skating, high skill and effort by both teams. Not a lot of whistles. They are built a lot like us. Not huge sh!t disturbers but they don't stop moving their feet and they overwhelm the opposition in all 3 zones with skating, hits, forechecking, defensive commitment, and energy. Obviously Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov, and Gustafson, are key to their success.

I didn't think they were overly dirty compared to other top teams over the last decade myself. Pretty tame actually except for Ek. Easy to see why they've been successful though. Well coached, great skating, and commitment to each other and the team staples.

There was the hit on Sherwood that probably should have been called but I can understand how it was missed. It was a close intense play that happened incredibly fast in real time and came at a time when when both teams were competing very hard and fairly. Anyone could see a big hit coming and the result ... possible charge, but I didn't actually catch the forearm to the head except on replay. Of course Sherwood took it like a champ, made a great play to clear the danger on the same sequence, and absolutely nailed a Wild player a couple shifts later.

If anything, Suter's the one who could have done more to get back in the play, not Boeser, no? It was a clear 2-0, but he basically just handed it to Boeser for the breakaway, stopped skating and hung back to watch the play develop (could argue he was still an option to pass back to, but barely), but then didn't get back in time despite being the faster skater.

Mostly it's all just nitpicking fractions of a second, though. I'm just glad Sherwood didn't come out of that game injured.

He's at 25min a night. 27min is a large gap he would need to play 29min a night for the next 25 games to get there I don't see that happening.

He's not even the leading toi player right now. He is currently 8th.

Yeah I thought Suter backed off too when I thought he could sneak in as a backdoor pass option. But whatever it's a non converted breakaway not really something we should be critical of.

It has already started happening.

Again, 3 straight OT games. Hughes' TOI through 3 periods :

26:26
28:06
24:16

He's averaged about 26:00 without the OTs, which is a bump of about a minute from his season average, and totally fine.

What a shame. Oh well.

I don't know if I've ever seen karma work so quickly. Ha.

I didn't realize you could overtime omit time from a players minutes just because.

Karma for what? Hoping a player doesn't get injured. Last year was Hughes first season playing 82 games and he played under 25 minutes. Previous two seasons he played over 25 minutes and missed a small amount of games in both seasons.

You just can't acknowledge that 25min a night for a 1D is totally normal. The last 3 games is not how an average works my dude and there will be opportunities for Tocchet to cut some minutes for the guy.

I was out and missed most of the game, but I caught a quick clip of the hit on Sherwood's head. Was there a call?
