The offside challenge was precipitated by the above play. I've never seen anything that bad before or since. It was always trying to solve a problem that didn't really exist, and now it only causes issues even if the call is 'right.' Why have linesmen?

Wow lol.

Function creep. It doesn't have to be as bad as Duchene, but it's taken to the extreme. Unlikely to happen again, but, BUT, if it did, in OT, in Game 7, for the Cup, can you let the goal stand if it happened in that situation? Could say well hey, if the ref doesn't see it, too bad. That's legitimate, and everyone will move on with life eventually, but it would be, OMG, the NHL is bush league. The refs are awful! They have to replay the game! This is a corrective measure to that. Is it being abused? To the letter, no, to the spirit, probably yeah.

Why have linesmen? You can flip it, and ask, why have the technology to review plays if you're not going to use it to its fullest extent? If a play is technically offside, well, you know. Winning and losing can be the difference between a few million here and there. You can then ask, why not go back and review a bad tripping penalty? Then you can ask, why have human refs that make mistakes? Let's automate the refs, get more precise "eyes" everywhere, and decrease the amount of mistakes in real time.

Remember Brett Hull's foot in the crease? There's a reason we've peeled back from that, and I don't see offside review as much different than OH GOD DONT TOUCH THE BLUE LAVA

IIRC aren't they trying to put cameras across the lines in the boards for that sort of thing, or have they done that already?

I agree that it's function creep and I can understand why people see it differently but in my opinion while the letter of the law on offside is pretty cut-and-dry and literally objective, I think the spirit is important and removing any more official agency is a pretty slippery slope. But then again I'm also pretty old school and don't really like it on goalie interference calls, either--I'd rather it just be used to literally see if a puck crossed a line and no more. Every once in a while you'll get a colossal f*** up like Duchene or a puck off the netting in Joe Louis arena or Brett Hull's foot in the crease but I don't want to remove the human element if we're not going to remove the humans, half-measures are dangerous and remove responsibility along with agency.

Just to state the obvious, there’s no way the Kings win that game last season.

The Kings wouldn't have won half of them. And the current lines would not be same .especially Iafalo. He's be on the 4th or healthy scratch, bet on it!
Sutter:
" Mumble,mumble,mumble...he needs to earn his ice time, needs to better on the defensive side, mumble mumble mumble"

The linesmen are there to maintain the flow of the game. The technology is there for support, as it should be.

I don't know how people can hate the challenge. If the Kings had a goal scored against them that should have been called offside, would you all seriously be okay with that?

I hate it because it was never a problem. Very rarely did people go "whoa the linesmen f***ed up," especially not 45 seconds into a play when a goal was scored. Yes, even if it were against the Kings, I would be ok with no review for offsides. I can see why people say otherwise, I just personally don't like it for anything other than making sure a puck crosses a goal line.

There were a couple bad goals let in but yea, pretty impressive. Sharks were not covering the center of the ice well, that's something the Kings do pretty good at least. Guys were wide open in the middle for a few of the goals. But it's not like the Sharks have been playing poorly lately, either. Going to be a nice test for the Kings tomorrow.

Jones did himself no favors. He was quite terrible in net.
