German football season 2023/24

For some reason I watched the second half of the Mexico game. The offensive play was generally not bad. Sane gets it done finally on a regular basis it seems. And Füllkrug did what he does best. Scoring goals. The German defensive play was bad.
IMO Niklas Süle is no NT material. He let down Antonio and made him look bad and the second goal was on him anyway. Germany has a serious issue on defence. I hope Nagelsmann gets it fixed somehow, otherwise it will be a short tournament (again) next year.

Yeah. I'm generally pro-palastinian but Mainz did the right thing with El Ghazi. There's a line and if Mazraoui tip-toed across it, El Ghazi said "motherf*** a line" and tried to erase it behind him.
Still while I agree, Bayern had no problem making Boateng train.
Hypocrisy is strong.

I'm not sure there are any great options, but would rather see some mixing of Rüdi/Tah/Thiaw/Hummels before seeing Süle or Schlotterbeck in the starting 11 again. It's similar to the situation in the midfield in that Süle/Schlotterbeck are probably in the top 2 or 3 in terms of their talent, but there's just something that doesn't work right for the NT.

Boa certainly isn't the only CB with domestic violence charges that those scumbags have employed ;-) But just because you let guys with a DV charge play for you doesn't mean you have to support players who are openly cheering for Israel to be destroyed :dunno:

...ew, did I just defend Bayern?

I'd rather play Schlotterbeck or Süle than Tah or Rüdi; especially if Hummels is back for real. Our biggest issue is how slow our defenders are, that's why teams with speedy attackers who attack quickly, like Mexico and Japan, have caused us so much trouble on the counter.

And Tah is just too plodding to help with that. Süle may mess up, but at least he can get back into position to mess up, that's why he was covering for Tah on that first goal. Similarly Schlotterbeck may not have the same straight line speed that Süle has but he's one of our best athletes in defense...despite being cursed for the NT like MAtS used to be.

If opa Hummels is back to be the organizer/brains of the defense then we don't need to rely on Rüdiger for experience/leadership, and our issues with speed become even more of a concern. That's why if we're sticking with 3CBs + 1 FB, I'd play Schlotterbeck/Süle - Hummels - Thiaw.

Though I am still curious how we'd do with 2 defensive FBs like Henrichs, Klostermann, Kimmich, or Groß. As I still feel like 2 defensive FBs + a holding 6, could be the best way to support our front 4 + Gundogan.

Not sure what you mean.
I'm not saying they should let it go, they should open their eyes to other problems.

I was making a snide comment about Lucas.

But you won't hear me disagreeing. I do believe in second chances and can understand why supporting large-scale ethnic violence is more of a concern, but I agree that the way big clubs sweep away issues that they think they can get away with is gross.

Unless your only focus is the results, the team is fun to watch. Musiala-Wirtz-Sane is as gifted a trio as you'll find in international football, Füllkrug is on a great run for the NT...9 goals in 11 games, goal every 53 NT minutes...and Ilkay pulls the strings behind the front 4 like a maestro.

Plus since the other 5 guys aren't as good...despite Gosens being such a stud in the air...we concede often enough for games to always be exciting.

We could easily flame out early again unless Martel, Morgalla, Thiaw, and Schlotterbeck all reach their full potential and gel before the tourney...but the football should be fun whether our defense holds up or not.

Paris Brunner has been suspended indefinitely by BVB. Nothing about why other than there was an incident that they felt required this response...

Maybe you can comment on whether this source is to be taken seriously, but I did see this on Twitter. Assuming it's true, it probably says something about the severity of this... "incident".

IIRC Berger’s not a hack. Could be something to that.

FWIW Adeyemi got kicked out of Bayern’s academy and he’s not a POS, but he also didn’t have a single incident like this. So I guess we’ll find out what this was all about :dunno:

Kruse confirming in a recent interview that he was part of the 30 man squad before Brazil but got cut. On the one hand, I get picking Poldi for that last spot because he's a good soldier, the room loved him, and he'd been there since the start of our re-ascent...but integrating Kruse could've been the difference in 2016.

Probably the first really good game by Nmecha with Dortmund. Happy to see Reyna get some time again too, strong performance by him as well.

What did it say? Brunner has apparently been disciplined before for things like tardiness, but I’m assuming this is something else.

Dortmund finally take the lead against Bremen after Brandt coolly finishes a nice pass from Can.

Very meh match, but nice finish from him. 300th Bundesliga match for him as well. Maybe it’s his… effortless style, but I find he’s become underrated over the years.

Didn’t notice Dortmund re-signed Haaland. Not sure why they’re playing him at RB though.

We could've done better on the goal but the defense looks better in general with Knoche & Khedira back. Now we need to start putting some pressure on Stuttgart...I'm thinking Laidouni/Aaronson & Becker/Fofana for Tousart & Volland?

Another game, another goal for Beier.

*sigh* this is what happens when a team in great form that has everything going its way faces a team in crisis, that has to fight for every inch. Switch off for a moment in the first and we end up having to chase the game despite a good performance, which lets VFB hit us on the counter twice to ice it.

We had our chances to draw it level, Behrens and Fofana both with good chances not long before the 2-0, but we couldn't take them so Fischer had to push too many men forward and Stuttgart was able to capitalize. Proud of the performance if disappointed by the result.

- Glad Khedira is back, with him & Kral healthy we shouldn't have to start Tousart again whether we play with two 6s behind a front 3 or with 1 behind 2 8s and a forward duo.
- Might have been Fofana's best match for Union as he helped Becker do things and should've scored the equalizer. I'd play a 3-5-2 against Napoli and bring Fofana off the bench, but against Werder I'd like to see Fofana - Behrens - Becker from the start...if they're not gassed
- And once again I'll say that I think it's time Trimmel move to RCB or the 6, he's just too slow to create enough separation to get good crosses in consistently and he'd be a lot more useful distributing long balls from deeper positions.

But in general the luck we had the past few years has abandoned us and the core just looks drained as our depth hasn't improved enough to keep them fresh. We need some luck to spark us or it'll be a question of holding on until the English weeks end because our depth falls off pretty quickly after our best 15-16 players.

...at least with Khedira and Knoche back we have the personnel to lock things down defensively again, if we're not already too tired...
