German football season 2023/24

Brandt has been pretty good this season

Bensebaini gets an incredibly stupid second yellow for kicking the ball way from Matarazzo on a pending throw-in. Definitely soft, but just a completely braindead thing to do already on a caution.
I confirm ,he has a temper

He admitted during his introduction interview as a new BVB player that he needs to work on that

It would be nice to act on it though

Ulreich had an otherwise bad match against Leipzig, but did save them a point with a late save against Leipzig charging up the pitch to intervene a good chance.

Four BL losses in a row for Union now...
They'll rebound I think. They are experiencing a bit of a luck/xG overcorrection versus last year and will probably smooth out once they get healthy and are no longer dividing attention to European competition. I do think where the goals will consistently come from is a ? mark though.

He was disastrous with Lyon.
Yes, I read that, too. 35 yo player, too bad for any European league and Bayern is considering him as the backup of the backup of the backup. That's bold. Plus: the fans don't want him, plus there's still lthe egal thing (beating up his gf IIRC).
This is really: WOW!

Yeah, that was a let down. Was only half-watching while cleaning, but great goal from Beste for Heidenheim, and they defended with gusto....but we should've done a lot better with our openings. Behrens is no Füllkrug or Boniface *sigh* so I can't fault him too much, and Becker has been dangerous.

But I am a bit disappointed with Fofana so far. He has good technical skills and physical gifts, but none of them standout like Becker's speed or Behrens' physical/aerial presence. So when he's not beating guys off the dribble or combining successfully in tight spaces, he's not contributing much and he hasn't yet clicked for us.

Luckily it's been nice out so I haven't watched that much of the season so far ...need to start getting back on track against Braga though. This would be a great time for a convincing 3-4 goals win. Just sayin'...

That Simons kid is special. The pass in the last minute deserved a goal to top it off.

Oranje should build the team around him.

Yeah, he's been a blast so far. Definitely in the mix for player of the early season with Sane/Kane and Wirtz/Boniface.

Brandt was one of their best players last year as well, it actually started the season before that. He makes a lot more of a contribution outside of his goals/assists than he used to and puts in a pretty consistent effort against the ball...making the midfield viable despite his & Jude's forays forward.

He's not as magical as Musiala or Wirtz, and his physical tools aren't as special as Havertz / Sane / Adeyemi / Schade, so I don't see him starting consistently for the NT, but he should be one of the first names off the bench as long as he keeps playing like this.

And yeah, Bense picked up the mantle from Xhaka at BMG. Excellent player, but definitely a hothead

It's crazy that Bayern entered the season with only 3 CB. I didn't really appreciate that until now.

Yeah, there’s a reason why they started getting linked to a bunch of CB/RB types as soon as Pavard wanted to leave.

FWIW Buchmann’s very highly rated and has looked good in cameos before. But yeah, Bayern wasting their money on Kane instead of securing their defense was a big mistake

Yeah, I know Buchmann is a big talent, but as a 4th CB, relying on him is risky

Kane was a luxury but they did need a surefire striker to replace the Lewy void. They convinced themselves Pavard had changed his mind or wouldn't have loaned Stanisic (to possibly their biggest competition) and wouldn't have left trying to fill the hole so late in the window. Bigger problem is still everyone (except Tuchel) being convinced that Kimmich is enough of a 6 that they don't need to acquire one (he's more than fine against most BL opposition, but once you get into heavier teams in the UCL, just like the NT, that's not a role he can fill well-double-pivot or no).

It sucks that they’re getting Eberl, he wouldn’t have made those same mistakes: Hopefully the rest of the decision making hierarchy undermines him.

Maxi Beier scored again for TSG. The jump to the senior level has been difficult for him, but he's a talented kid if things have finally started to come together for him.
LFC linked with this guy recently kind of out of no where. What’s his deal? Anything here? Seems a bit Timo Werner?

Eh. I dunno how good he’ll get but he’s pretty different from Timo. He doesn’t have that same kind of speed as Werner, but uses his size better and is better in tighter spaces.

Plus Beier is a natural forward…unlike Timo who was a winger at the youth levels.

Yeah I see a bit of Timo because he can move a bit at that size. Guys that size usually can’t run like that. I need to watch more though; similar toolkit but different application maybe. Might have fallen in the comparing German to German trap. After my trip to Munich might have that on the brain. Probably won’t happen but last guy we signed from Hoffenheim turned out alright. Saw weak link (from Falk) to Malen too. I think Adeyemi would be better fit, but seems like he’s gotten off to a rotten start this season

He moves well with good size but his physical tools aren’t particularly special; he’s no Havertz or Haaland in either size or speed. Ignoring playing style and technical skills his physical tools are most like Brandt’s of recent German attackers.

And yeah, very different application. Beier was a central striker coming up who only started playing on the wing when he went on loan to Hannover. While Timo was the opposite, a lifelong winger who was turned into a forward at the senior level.

As for Adeyemi he was banged up this summer and missed their preseason; so he’s still working his way into form. Malen has settled in well for them since his slow start; he’s a lot more like Timo.
