Satoru Iwata, Nintendo CEO, died yesterday at age 55 due to bile duct growth.
RIP.
Some of Iwata's accomplishments:
- Helped HAL with the nearly doomed developement of Earthbound by completely rewriting the code from scratch that handled text, making it much more efficient which in turn cleared the way for that amazing soundtrack. Oh, and he did it all
IN ONE NIGHT
- The production of Pokemon Gold/Silver was stalled because the dev team could not fit the region of Johto in a 2MB cartridge. He helped Game Freak rewrite Pokemon Gold/Silver to the point it was so efficient, they had room to not only fit Johto in, but also add an
entire separate region (Kanto) in, all of which fit in under 2MB.
- Helped get the Kirby series off the ground way back in the late 80's/early 90's
- Led Nintendo's biggest franchises into the new generation with the GCN and made the transition to 3D virtually seamless.
- Helped Sakurai get Melee out the door shortly after the GCN launched. Not just that, but was the reason the Smash series came to be period.
- Single-handedly reverse engineered the Pokemon battle system for Pokemon Stadium for the N64, without any reference documents or help... in ONE week.
Very sad news. Not only has the industry lost the legend, but the world, period, has lost a legend. Him and Miyamoto are not only two of the biggest reasons the industry is so big and fruitful today, but it's also the reasons guys like me and many others are avid gamers today. Iwata's games were responsible for some of the best moments in my childhood. I grew up with them and still play them to this day.
RIP, Mr. iwata
