WC: General Talk '14 — USA

Invitations should be this week? No?

Last year invitations started to leak around April 20th with the first 15 players officially announced by USAH on April 25th. Last year was a later deadline due to the strike shortened season and the tournament started earlier last season as well.

I would imagine we may start getting news next week.

I hope you guys take Jake Gardiner.

He was very good for the last half of the season. Even despite the Maple Leafs collapse.

Pretty sure the main reason he hasn't gone in past years was Toronto's desire to have him play in the AHL playoffs.

Wouldn't be surprised if he resigns with Carolina soon getting rid of his UFA status, but Ron Hainsey would be available. He has been Carolina's most consistent dman. You know what you'll get with him night in and night out.

He's better than Liles and Hainsey has actually played a good bit with Faulk so there is already some chemistry there if Faulk ends up going. Good two way pairing. All depends if he's interested in going but when I saw Liles' name up there it made me think about it.

Well, my boys are out (Canucks)... Higgins, Kes, Booth ...

Kinda looking forward to this tournament. I have to admit that I don't typically watch international tournaments (unless it's the Olympics) but I'm actually excited for this upcoming tournament.

Kesler has not accepted a world championship invite since 2006 and considering his injury history the past few years I can't imagine he'd accept today.

I don't usually say no to players, but Booth might be an exception. I don't think he helps the team that much at this point as he's such a shell of his former self. Higgins I would love to have.

Kes won't accept, I'm fairly certain of that...

LOL! That's why I put that little laughing dude next to Booth's name. ;) Sweet Jesus I hope we can offload him over the summer... But that's another thread for another forum I suppose.

Higgins I would love to have.

I'd like to see Higgins in a TEAM USA sweater... he's a solid player and I think he would do well (but then again I really don't know much about international play/tournaments).

I think Higgins is very underrated. He's a good possession player, can skate pretty well and would be a good add for the team's level we usually put out in these early cycle Worlds.

Booth I honestly I am not sure will be in the NHL next year. :shakehead

Leave three spots open in the hopes of adding an impact forward, defenseman and goalie (if you aren't required to have 3, can't remember) after the first round

My hopeful initial team at this point:

Forwards:

Chris Higgins - Nick Bjugstad - Craig Smith
Johnny Gaudreau - Colin Wilson - Drew Stafford
Eric Nystrom - Brock Nelson

Defense:

Mark Stuart - Jacob Trouba
Andy Greene - Seth Jones

Goalies:

Cory Schneider
Richard Bachman

Notes:
  • I think this would be a good start to the team but they'd still need a few dominoes to fall their way to be a threat. There are other players I'd consider at this point for spots but it's dependent on the long shots (Kessel, Wheeler, JVR, etc.) all saying no. USAH should have those answers before they extend offers to guys like Dwyer, Trocheck, Lee, etc.
  • Getting Schneider or Anderson to commit is key. I hope Schneider plays - he's a true #1 goalie that hasn't played as much as he should have the last few years given the goalies he's been paired with. The more games the better for him.
  • Other than Schneider (or Anderson), the only other player above I wouldn't be surprised to say no would be Andy Greene.
  • If USAH can get at least two of these forwards to commit they'll be dangerous: Blake Wheeler, Kyle Okposo, JVR, Phil Kessel, and Ryan Kesler. I think I'd be shocked if any of them played other than maybe JVR.
  • If USAH can get one of John Carlson or Justin Faulk to play that would also be a big help.
  • I'd target the following but they're all pending UFA/RFAs so they're likely to say no: Nathan Gerbe, Chris Butler, Jimmy Hayes, Ron Hainsey, Jeff Petry and Jake Gardiner.

As usual, well done.

It's too bad Ghost is likely to sign with Philly and join their roster for the playoffs as I'm sure USAH would definitely consider giving him a spot on the squad.

Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien both declined. Jacob Trouba is going to decide in the next couple of days but it sounds like he's going as long as his health checks out.

Sounds like USAH has contacted the Florida Panthers and they will allow Nick Bjugstad, Jimmy Hayes, Vince Trocheck, and Drew Shore all play if they're invited.

Could Corey Elkins have any chance to get an invite? Great season in FEL and can play any role.
