WC: General Talk '14 — Germany

What will the roster look like? And the question on many people's mind, will Leon Draisaitl play?

Very tough to say. There was a tourney in France two months ago where Cortina tried to get a look at some young guys. The roster is listed here and I guess it's save to say that most of the guys with 50+ or 60+ games in the right column will form the core for the WC as well (if you're not familiar with German hockey, that won't be very helpful for you though ;) ).
Then you have Ehrhoff and Sulzer who will miss the NHL playoffs with Buffalo and who already said that they want to play. As for the other NHLers, Seidenberg will certainly not go, even if the Bruins miraculously get swept in the first round. Goc is pretty unlikely as well.

As for the goalies, Greiss already got snubbed once because the DEB felt like he had not played enough (as a backup for Niemi in SJ) and nobody can tell if they are going to make an equally Pejorative Slured decision again. It should be Greiss, Grubauer and probably Vogl in my opinion but I'm not holding my breath.

Then you have a couple of younger guys down in the AHL but they are traditionally ignored completely. Then again, Noebels made the team last year even though he played for Adirondack, so who knows.

As for Draisaitl, I would say the chances of him making the team are maybe 30:70. He was quoted shortly after being eliminated from the WHL playoffs saying that he had not been contacted by anyone about the national team yet, but that doesn't really mean much. However, there's a rich tradition of being completely ignorant of what's going on in North America at the DEB and I don't think anyone from the CHL has ever been nominated. Then again, there's so much talk about Leon and he looks to be the biggest talent coming out of Germany in a very long time, so the DEB can't possibly have missed it. Also, Cortina may be a little different in that regard as he nominated Noebels last year and in general, the German roster isn't exactly loaded with offensively gifted players.

Germany will play 6 games as a part of the Euro Hockey Challenge from the 10th to the 26th of April and then two more friendlies before the WC (as far as I know, there haven't been any roster announcements for these games yet). For the first few games, there will still be quite some players missing as the DEL playoffs will be still going on then so I could imagine Draisaitl being evaluated there.

The only time I've seen Leon is at the WC...twice. Given his offense, I think it would be a mistake not to take him. Goalies could be solid with Greiss and Grubauer and if Ehrhoff and Sulzer come over they could be "ok" on defense. One more thing. I don't read the threads much and I know this next player isn't ready for the men but I hope Kahun can have a shot somewhere someday. Again, only seen him at the WC but the little guy is ok.

First camp roster

So apparently, they're breaking down the the tournament into two-game chunks. The roster in the post above me is for the games against France on the 1oth and 11th April. Great to see that both Draisaitl and Kahun are getting looks there.

Here is the (German) press release and a more detailed roster table that might clear up some confusion (i.e. it's of course Nicolai Goc and Yannic Seidenberg, not their brothers from the NHL).

This is schedule for Team Germany up to the World Championships:

Ehrhoff, Sulzer, Holzer, Draisaitl, Grubauer and Greiss could all potentially be there from the NHL. I'm cheering for Germany to upset again like they did in 2010!

Defensemen Lindlbauer and Haase have been cut prior to the two games against Finland. In addition to that, Michael Wolf with miss these two games because of an injury and is questionable for the tournament as well, while Dennis Endras won't be available for the World Championships due to personal reasons.

Added to the roster were Rob Zepp (G) and Benedikt Kohl (D).

There are a few candidates from the DEL-teams left. Sebastian Vogl from Wolfsburg, Jerome Flaake, Thomas Oppenheimer, Christoph Schubert and Garrett Festerling from Hamburg (David Wolf will probably not be allowed to play because of his suspension). Timo Pielmeier, Thomas Greilinger and maybe Christoph Gawlik from Ingolstadt. Danny aus den Birken, Philipp Gogulla, Marcel Müller, John Tripp, Moritz Müller and Torsten Ankert from Cologne. And maybe someone else, who knows.

With Ehrhoff and Sulzer now injured, it will be interesting to see if they can actually participate.

While I think it is the right decision to cut Haase, I must say I was pleasantly surprised by his play against France. He looked much better than the last time I saw him, when he played in the WJC 2012/13. I thought he improved in pretty much every aspect of the game.

Sulzer has been injured for a while now. Unless he recovers in time to play in several exhibition games with the team, I am not sure he will be much help.

The Ehrhoff situation is also difficult. With a concussion, even a mild one, you never know how long it might take, and I hope he won't be reckless with his health.

I would really like to see Pielmeier get a shot. His playoffs thus far were phenomenal. He won several games for his team and was one of the major reasons they are now in the finals.

I also hope that Rieder's injury is not too bad and he can join the team, but I am a little worried.

Where is kuhnhakl ?

That's the quickest jump off the radar ever.

Kühnhackl is still playing in the ECHL for the Wheeling Nailers.
While he has dropped off the radar for the NHL for now, he still is on the radar for our national team.

How did Draistail and Kahun look against France? I know Leon got a couple assists.

Draisaitl looked really good and he could have had a couple more assists if his teammates had been better at finishing. He showed everything that people have been raving about. Great vision and passing, good stickhandling, very difficult to knock off the puck. He was very calm and poised and did some good work on the backcheck.
I am really curious how he will do against Finland this week.

Kahun was less noticeable for me. However I liked his work on the forecheck and how he battled for the puck. I don't expect to see him at the World Championships this year, but it won't be long.

So Wolf is out due to injury and Endras has dropped out for personal reasons, they get replaced by Zepp and Kohl. Everyone else stays on the roster.

I give Cortina the benefit of the doubt because they maybe just want to test players but this is shaping up to be another disastrous goalie selection.

Abeltshauser is injured as well, so there goes another candidate for the defense. Though I'm not sure if San Jose would have released him while they were still in the playoffs anyway. They would look really stupid if they send players from the farm away and then have half the defense drop out with an injury.

Looks pretty bad for players from North America:

(G) Greiss: should be available and should easily be the starter, let's hope Cortina doesn't act stupid on that position again
(G) Grubauer: Hershey might make the playoffs, otherwise he should be on the roster
(G) Niederberger: not really a candidate, hardly played anyway
(D) Seidenberg: out for the season
(D) Ehrhoff: light concussion, unknown if he will make it in time
(D) Sulzer: concussion, less chances than Ehrhoff to be ready in time
(D) Holzer: Toronto has one of the best farmteams, should still be in the playoffs at that time
(D) Abeltshauser: injured
(F) Goc: injured and in the playoffs
(F) Rieder: injured, no idea when healthy again
(F) Noebels: terrible season
(F) Kühnhackl: not much better
(F) Draisaitl: available
(F) Kahun: available

That means only the goalies and juniors are realistic, the rest is probably unvailable. That't especially bad when you consider the defense we have.

I guess, it is too early for Nicolas Latta, but he seems to play well in the AHL, after traded from his CHL team.

Ah, I tried so hard to not forget someone, and then I still ended up doing it. Yes, Latta would be a candidate as well, but I don't think he will get a chance this soon. Noebels had far more success at AHL-level before he got his chance.

Dont think Gawlik will be a candidade from ERC Ingolstadt. Patrick Hager ,Patrick Köppchen and maybe Rookie of the year Goalie Timo Pielmeier from ERC Ingolstadt will be candidades.

Köppchen retired from that national team, I think. He was nominated again for the pre-tournament games last year, ended up being cut for no good reason and announced that he wouldn't be available in the future, if I remember correctly.

Ah ok didnt know that, Köppchen has been Ingolstadts best Defensemen in the Playoffs so far.

So with Ehrhoff, Sulzer, M.Wolf, D.Wolf, Abeltshauser, J.Reimer, P.Reimer, Ullmann, Rankel, Endras, and Petermann all out for the tournament, the pool of available players is looking quite small.

Hopefully some of the young guys get a chance and can use it as a learning experience.

Ehrhoff and Sulzer officially announced that they won't be there today. That sucks some serious ass. :(

It is always the same..I often just have the feeling, that German players don't really think they need to play for the national team...vacation sounds much more interesting.

Sometimes I had the same feeling, but in these cases I understand it. Even a mild concussion like Ehrhoff's shouldn't be taken lightly and if it were me, I'd rather be too careful and not take any risks.
And in Sulzer's case the concussion was worse and I think he is not signed anywhere for next season, so it makes sense not to be reckless with his health.

So I'm disappointed, but I get it.
