I am not sure about the data for Matthias Plachta. The DEB has him listed at 1,84m and 101kg and also as 24 years old. Eliteprospects and the DEL have him at 22 years old. I am pretty sure DEB got it wrong, but I don't know for certain.

Plachta should indeed only be 22. He played in the 2010 WJC, which would have been impossible if he was 24 right now.

Apparently Cortina is thinking about inviting Patrick Köppchen again. I thought Köppchen didn't want to play again after what happened last year, but that might not be the case. Seeing how Köppchen was just voted DEL playoff-MVP and has shown surprisingly good offense in addition to his excellent defense in the recent past, this would be very good news.

Köppchen returning would indeed be great news. The only defenders on this roster I trust somewhat are Hördler, Braun and Krueger, though I have liked what I have seen from Akdag so far as well.

Would Alexander Weiß and Christoph Gawlik be a good option? How realistic it is that they will get a spot? Gawlik seemed to be pretty good in the playoffs.

Yeah, but a few exhibition games aside, Gawlik has not been part of the national team for a long time. I doubt that Cortina really views him as an option, especially with the way the young guys like Draisaitl, Kahun and Rieder have played so far.
That said, I have wanted Gawlik back on the team for a couple of years now, it would be great if he could get a shot again. I still remember when he first made the national team and played with Schütz and Gogulla. They were the youngest guys on the team but pretty much the best line or at least the most fun to watch. They all had so much energy, especially Gawlik and Schütz.

Can't really comment on Weiß. I guess he is an option, although I see other, more viable candidates.

Gawlik had a very bad season but exceptional Playoffs. I dont think he will be part of the team. Patrick Hager played a similar role in Ingolstadt with a very good season. He was a steady part of the national Team so i think he will be in. I hope Köppchen will play the world championships, he was so good in the playoffs. Also i hope that Goalie Timo Pielmeier will be in, he was unbelievable the complete season.

Anyways the Ingolstadt Guys are partying right now, so there will be no descission till Monday cause they where drunk :yo::yo:

I also hope that Pielmeier gets an invite. I didn't see much of him in the regular season, but his numbers were very solid for a rookie goalie in a team that wasn't playing at the top of the league. But when I saw him in the playoffs he was insane on a regular basis.

Cortina has added 4 player from Cologne and none from Ingolstadt.

I would have taken Pielmeier over aus den Birken, but adB has played for Germany before, so this might have led to the decision. It's all kind of moot anyway, as Zepp will be the starter.

Gogulla and Hager were supposed to be invited as well, but Gogulla has an injury while Hager refused for personal reasons. Marcel Müller probably didn't play well enough this year, and Köppchen didn't get an invite either, though I never thought he would in the first place.

Out of the 28 players currently on the roster, only 26 will travel to Belarus, and only 25 can be nominated.

Who do you think will be cut before they go to Belarus?

I guess it will be Kahun and either Kohl or Boyle.

Kahun would be the obvious choice, he hasn't played in the last few games. No idea who will be gone on defense. One out of Kohl, Goc, Reul, Boyle or Akdag probably. You never know how Cortina decides these things. Does it go by performance over the last season, performance in the last few games, how established a player is, all these would lead to different players not making it. If I had to take a guess, I'd say Kohl or Akdag.

So Cortina will really go with Zepp and aus den Birken, huh? Ridiculous.

Well I hope, that Grubauer will at least be the backup and maybe get a couple of games.

I like Zepp and I think when he on his game he is a really good goalie, but I don't think he should be the starter for the national team.

Obviously I don't know as much about hockey as Cortina, but from my outside perspective I would have gone with Greiss, Grubauer and Pielmeier.

OT: So it looks like Harnos will remain DEB-President. Is that bad news or terrible news?

German hocky is making a fool of itself once again.

Not a single player from the german champion? Are you freakin kidding me?
That's so stuipd, i can't even find words.:shakehead:shakehead
What a joke Cortina is:shakehead

It sounds worse than it actually is. If you look at the list of candidates, things don't look that bad.

Pielmeier: should have been there, but if that position turns into a problem, the team would be screwed anyway
Köppchen: retired after he was cut last year, unknown if he really would have accepted an invite
Hager: rejected the invitation
Greilinger: hasn't looked all that hot playing for Germany since forever
Gawlik: played well in the later stages of the playoffs, but had a horrendous season otherwise

There really isn't anyone of interest beyond those five.

Agreed, also sometimes it's hard to get motivated again after winning the title. I have no problem with this.

We also have seen this in the past even before Cortina. Especially with players from Eisbären Berlin, when they won the DEL almost every year.
There were a lot of players on those championship teams that played great in the regular season and in the playoffs, but more often than not only a few played in the World Championships. And some of them like Rankel, did not even come close to playing as well as they did for Berlin.

The only guy that really bugs me is Pielmeier. I know that he would not be the difference between a good and a bad tournament for this team. It is just that he played so phenomenal that I would have loved to see a great performance rewarded.

Whether or not I am happy or at least content with Cortina's roster hinges on the final cuts.

Additional to Gawlik. He cancelled Honeymoon last year after the season because of surgery and rehab training wants to catch up this offseason. But i think that he was not considered.
Regarding Greilinger, there are Rumours that he wants to leave Ingolstadt because of gossip over his private life. He was injured at the national team last year and because of that he was not that good in the regular season. So maybe he also decided not to go to be with family or avoid another injury.

What kind of message does is it send when the playoffs MVP of the DEL doesn't get invited for the national team? Maybe you insiders understand it, but certainly not the casual watchers. Actions like that are simply a low blow to german hocky.
Not nominitating the playoff MVP is beyond disrespectful. To the player, to the the DEl to German hockey in general.

Again, Köppchen retired from the national team after not getting nominated for tor the last World Championship. You can't just assume that this isn't the case anymore.

Casual viewers won't even be able to name more than five players on the team anyway, if even that. They'd probably consider it to be a bit weird if you told them of this, but it's not like they would know much about these players or even be outraged about it.

Who cares about Köppchen.

I'm excited to see Rieder, Draisaitl, Noebels & Grubauer on the NT.

A shame some of the other young talents couldn't make it.

Cortina said Aus den Birken has been more consistent the last two years and that is why he got the call over Pielmeier. Also said that Müller isn't better than the players already on the team at the moment. Köppchen and Greilinger weren't nominated over concerns about their age and games played due to the playoffs. That was the politician way of saying it at least.

So Boyle and Goc were cut. (Goc probably because he was hurt yesterday)
