Lol, no it doesn't. That tourney is a complete joke and will not be played anymore after this year.

From IIHF

As for the topic, does guys like Weber who played in Olympics this year have a change to play in World Championship if they want?

Can you explain to me then why would rankings change just prior to WHC.

I honestly doubt that anyone in North America cares about the triple gold club. It's the best international tournament, plus the best league tournament, plus... another international tournament. It doesn't make sense and makes the IIHF look a bit pathetic.

Just hockey geeks care doesn't matter the continent (basically only Swedish HF-posters cares about it in Sweden) but some players are hockey geeks as well.

They'll refrain from it because most of these guys have families to be with. Playing hockey 7 months of the year is draining. You play pre-season, regular season, fly over to Russia play in the Olympics, come back and finish the regular season and try an push yourself in the playoffs..now do you get it? Who's really going to jump at the opportunity to go to Belarus in their off-season time and play in yet another tournament? These guys just won the most prestigious gold. Maybe I'm different but if I played in the Olympics and won gold, there's a good chance I'm going home for the summer.

My whole beef towards this tournament is that it's laughable to have the Olympics and the WC valued the same. You're telling me the tournament which has ALL the best players in the world playing it has the same value as a tournament that will have the likes of David Perron, Jason Garrison, James Reimer, etc...it's a joke. The IIHF looks bad when it comes to this sort of thing and it's why the IIHF rankings are full of ****.

Sure 7 months is a lot, but Swedish NHL-players line up to play at the WC every year even if just knocked out in the SC, as they think it is fun to play hockey. That's why I ask, why Canadian players would not.

Could be. There is no way to know exactly who will show up for Canada. Perry showed up in 2010, which was shocking to me. I think that some Canadian Olympians would go to the tournament, but I am doubtful that the triple gold club enters their thinking. Some guys, particularly the younger players, just want to play more hockey and maybe win a tournament with their country.

World Championhip 2014 "Team Canada"

I'm going to bet that not a single player that won gold in Sochi will play at this years worlds.
For the European players who play in the NHL, it's exciting to come back and play in front of European fans, and many will, but I can't blame any of our players for turning down the invite.
As for the IIHF World Rankings, it's a complete farce! Canada wins Olympic gold and is still not ranked first. Give Sweden the luxury of another easy draw!

No I'm saying in an Olympic year it makes no sense to have a WC. We just had the real WC (Olympics). In a 7 month time frame players have to go through training camps, regular season, Olympics, then playoffs. That is a crap load of hockey and I expect not a single player who played for Canada in the Olympics to say yes and go back to Europe for a 2nd time to play It really is a joke. Canada's roster is going to look nothing like it should, which again brings me back to another point. How can the Olympics and the WC be valued the same!! It makes no sense.

If you're Shea Weber would you go? Keep in mind he just won Olympic Gold. If he says yes man he sure must want that World Championship gold eh? Like I said I really really doubt any Canadian Olympian is going to say yes, plus we don't even know what players are going to be available for selection due to the playoffs. Personally as a Leaf fan I wouldn't mind seeing Reimer back there, or Bernier, but I'm also selfish and want the Leafs deep in the playoffs.

Yes, the triple gold thing went a bit to big in the discussion. Anyway, why shouldn't they play for fun, it's hockey.

Well it is beyond my point. I was mostly baffled by the assumption which seemed like consensus here that the Olympic would not go to the WC. Why am I baffled? Because I don't recognise that attitude/mindset/? from Swedish players. But it could of course be a cultural difference. That in-itself would be nice to discuss as I like such questions.

You're probably right, it is cultural. Canadians don't grow up wanting or even dreaming of playing in a World Championship or winning a World Championship, we dream about winning the Stanley Cup and winning Olympic gold.

1. Stanley Cup, it will always be #1
2. Olympic Gold
3. WJHC
4. WC

World Championships are barely recognized here.

These tourneys have turned into the "young guns show us your stuff" for Canada, I don't care if they win its just fun to see the young guys playing

Hall E. Staal Eberle
Skinner Johansen Perron
Kane Turris Zajac
Ladd Little J. Staal
Nugent - Hopkins

Hamhuis Weber
Giordano Hamonic
Alzner Garrison
Murray

Luongo
Scrivens

Not good for Canada with most of the best players in playoff positions and Tavares out. Colorado or Dallas being eliminated would be the best for Canada's team. Maybe Toronto so that Canada can have goaltenders. This group would be big and solid defensively with some solid skating. I think Murray has a great shot at being on future editions of team Canada so he should get experience now.

No Way do the Staals go, No way does Weber go...no way

This is a list of teams that might not make it...i didnt include wild cards...
Forward
Jonathan Huberdeau - maybe depends who else is available
Sean Monahan - maybe depends who else is available
Adam Henrique
Jeff Skinner
Taylor Hall
Jordan Eberle
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
David Perron
Bryan Little
Andrew Ladd
Mark Scheifele
Evander Kane
Ryan Johansen

Defense
Tyler Myers
Brian Campbell
Travis Hamonic - maybe depends who else is available
TJ Brodie - maybe depends who else is available
Jay Harrison - maybe depends who else is available

I think subban would go. Im sure he understand now the way team canada works... if the habs are eliminated im sure he would like to step up and continue raising his international reputation for the next olympics. But maybe im wrong.

Swedish (I could write European, but that might be a bit to wide a category) players 100% I would think without exaggeration dreaming about SC than winning the WC.

Perhaps it comes from different takes on nationalism. I remember the thread where it was discussed it the poster would be disappointed if a player from their country turned down the Olympics. Most Canadians didn't care but a fair bit more European posters expressed dislike.

No playoff team player will go.
Most older superstar veterans will pass.
Probably no Olympian.
Guys who don't have a good relation with HC will pass.
Anyone who got injured in WC before will pass (poor Eric Staal, getting injured at WC probably cost him an Olympic spot)

Basically it's a lot of young budding stars, plus decent but not high calibur players.

Is it really that difficult to understand? It's mathematics. Whatever players there are in the team, the tournament format of olympics is so stupid that it makes no sense to give it more value than WCs.

Olympic tournament is still just one tournament with very few meaningful games. It means that sample quality is ridiculously poor. Sweden was 2nd in the tournament without winning any top country (only CZE, SUI, LAT, SLO and FIN) and they had a doping case too. Maybe you wouldn't complain about the ranking if Canada had lost 0-1 to USA and lost to Finns in bronze game.

In short: sample size, quality and rate are too poor to give this tournament more value.

Truth.

Can't really blame anyone from the Gold medal team to show interest in the yearly Skoda cup. Especially when it is held in Minsk!

No point you make is going to make me believe that the Olympics and the WC are the same. Olympics should be valued more. The WC's should take a seat behind the Olympics in an Olympic year plain and simple, take the year off and come back the next. You'll get better player turnout and it gives players a good break between international events. Having two tournaments in one year is overkill. Like whats the point of Canada playing? That they have the best second tier talent? They just won the true best on best.

I get it trust me, Euro's LOVE their WC I'm just bringing the other side to this. It sure is going to be fun playing those pesky french, and Italians..Maybe we can loan Cammalleri and Giordano to the Italian squad just to make things interesting.

Kadri could also be available if the Leafs don't get past the 1st round, his stick handling and nifty mittens would work wonders on the big ice. Reimer/Bernier would be available too. Phaneuf would be. Just putting those names out there for consideration.
