OT: General OT MEGATHREAD (No Politics) Pt. 3 - Read OP before posting

Stopped by a local brewery to pick up a six pack to go and saw they had this beer with a logo very very similar to pl1ny the e1der.

I asked if they had sixers and he said this was a 1 time thing. Apparently a disgruntled RR employee posted the pl1ny recipe on reddit and ppl got snap shots before it was taken down.

Theres clone home brew recipes out there and now the actual recipe is out there.

Tasted pretty close but the actual pl1ny is better imo, more piney resiney feel

I saw Sunny Day Real Estate (on their "Diary" reunion tour) in Philly last night and it brought me back a good 30 years. I actually convinced my brother (who originally got me into the band, and is a bigger fan than I am) to drive down from Rochester for the show. The tickets weren’t cheap, and he offered to pay for his, but I told him the next time the Bears play the Amerks in Rochester on a weekend, he can buy us front-row tickets and I’ll drive up.

Wow congrats! Big change, but as I recall you had a very dangerous profession. Part of me wondered if guys like you got called to action when the bridge collapsed.

Yeah I didn’t do much construction diving, I worked for the Navy and cleaned their ships. Ships husbandry is the correct term for my profession. Either way, I’m glad to take a break from some very laborious work and figure out what to do next. Labor jobs are not very sustainable for the long haul, I’m only 32. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? :help:

If I could and money wasnt a thing ..... I would do graphic design t shirts. Im pretty good at graffiti, drawing and coming up with cool "urban" eye candy for the masses.

IT - i have uber clients who take online IT classes and end up with mid 200k entry level job offers a few years later.

Wood working - make your own wood cutting boards and sell online. Not that hard to get down, huge market .. you go to farmers markets and fairs and youd sell imo. Fun mellow vibe life.

Uber driver - I love talking and meeting new people. my uber clients make about 1k a week if they log 40 hours.

toll booth operator - my dream job I envisioned as a kid. get to sit in booth listening to radio and smoke cigarettes. Id say "adios" to every person after they paid. damn robots took my job!

I saw this guy today really craning his neck and going out of his way to see this ambulance with its lights on out in front of a building.

I was like "whys that guy care so much?"

Then I realized .. we as humans do that bc we secretly hope to see a dead body being gurneyed into the ambulance.

Odd ... was that guy like "ahh nuts, nobody died"

Congrats buddy. We sold the company I was working on in the fall and I took some time off to play video games, watch movies and TV and figure out what I wanted to do next. I was close to taking another senior role in my sector but didn’t feel right about it so I turned it down and am now doing something (almost) completely different and haven’t been this happy in years. I’m in my late 30s so not too far ahead of you. You have 30+ years of working ahead of you most likely so better to take some time and find something you don’t wake up dreading if you have the means to do it.

Suggest maybe consulting or advising for a bit if your line of work allows for it, though it sounds like that could be tough given what you do. That’s how I found my current venture. Great thing about consulting/advising is you get exposed to a bunch of different people and business models and get paid to learn, essentially.

If you worked for the Navy I assume you have a clearance — checkout USAjobs.gov. Maybe something on the admin/management side of what you were doing before or something tangential to it, if only to help build your resume.

Switching careers is all about the story you want to tell. Assume given your old line of work that you may have some project management experience so maybe look into getting your PMP and doing Project Management work? You could probably slide into a variety of different government/construction-related PMP roles given your hands-on experience.

Or something completely different. I think it depends on the lifestyle you want. Remote? In-person? Part of a team or independent contributor? If you’re into fitness you could become a personal trainer but that’s obviously an on-site job. Or you can find something like graphic design, accounting, etc that you can do from anywhere.

Forty years after David Ayares made a breakthrough discovery about gene editing, his work with Southwest Virginia-based Revivicor is making international news.


Two men over the past two years have received hearts from pigs raised in Revivicor’s Montgomery County research and development facility. Each heart featured 10 genetic modifications to help them function in humans, and both men lived for more than a month.

United Therapeutics, which is based in Silver Spring, Maryland, and has operations in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, believes that clinical studies could begin in 2025. The two recent heart xenotransplants were experimental, conducted with consent from patients who did not qualify for human heart transplants.

Listening to NPR this morning and they interviewed 2 people, the surgeon who performed the first pig kidney transplant to a human and the ceo of a company called Egenesis.

Right in our backyard w United Therapeutics.

Egenesis is still a private company

United Ther is selling at 275 but has been over 200 for past few years.

Really interesting stuff. UT owns Revivicor who was founded by the guy who was the brains to geno-transformation

Im buying some right now

If they get approved for clinical trials .. this stock will jump and never look back

All good points, I’m basically just going to give it some time to see what I really want to do. Remote work on paper sounds good, but not sure if I’d like to be cooped up in my house since I’ve always worked outside. I have a couple options, my uncle makes killer money selling insurance (sounds boring) but essentially told me I have a job if I want with him and he can show me the ropes. Friend of mine works at UPS and gets tons of time off, thought about firefighter maybe. Project management seems like a solid option also, either way it’s a breath of fresh air. It helps to have a supportive spouse as well

Today is the 80th anniversary of the landings at Normandy France, on D-Day, in 1944. There are barely any participants left to join the remembrance ceremonies. Here is a quote from one of them:

“There are things worth fighting for,” said Walter Stitt, who fought in tanks and turns 100 in July, as he visited Omaha Beach this week. “Although I wish there was another way to do it than to try to kill each other.”

“We’ll learn one of these days, but I won’t be around for that,” he said.

I just checked the History Channel to see if they're showing any documentaries about D-Day. Nope, Pawn Stars marathon...

History channel stoped showing anything historical a long time ago.

smithsonian maybe. i remember one veterans day hbo just showed the pacific back to back to back.

When I was in my early teens (mid-late 00s), every day when I got home from school I’d turn on the tv and browse the History Channel, the Science Channel, Nat Geo, and Animal Planet to see which had the most interesting documentary on, then sit and watch it while I did my homework or just decompressed. Yes, I was quite a nerdy kid.

Now I have a remote job and I like to keep the TV on in the background to keep me company. I’d love to have the same documentaries on in the background that I watched back then, but they’re gone. The Science Channel has How the Universe Works on some mornings, but everything else is reality shows and ancient aliens and the Abandoned! type shows that at least have some history but you have to sit through a bunch of YouTube-reaction video-style stuff first where the experts give over the top “what could it POSSIBLY be?!?!” reactions before they’ll tell you.
