If anybody wants to help me understand why this was only a fine, when Labanc's three days earlier was a suspension, I'm all ears

If you left it as just this, I think it would also explain a lot:

One of these things is NOT like the others!
And those that are similar are all over the flippin' place...

November 26, 2021
Unsporstmanlike Conduct - $5,000
Panarin fined the maximum allowable, for a player of his salary, without a hearing
P.K. Subban
N6irXYN.gif
November 2, 2021
Tripping - $15,000
Subban fined the maximum allowable, for a player of his salary, with a hearing
(NOTE: Subban was a repeat offender; otherwise the max with a hearing is $10,000)
Kevin Labanc

November 18, 2021
Slew-footing - 1 game suspension
($23,625)
Offense was deemed beyond a fine. Salary is forfeited for each game suspended

But this also just shows that the DoPS does have the ability to diversify their rulings. They can fine less than the max; they can fine more than $5k (they just usually choose not to and quote "maximum allowable" instead).

I try not to compare across seasons too much - giving DoPS some benefit of the doubt that they can learn, grown, and set new precedents , but it is pretty comical that Panarin got the same fine as this:

and $5,000 more than this:

Panarin can be tossed down to the ground and punched for free, but can't throw a glove

Whoa, be careful. The NHL may fine you and have your parents fired.

After Ian Cole's spectacular knee-on-knee tonight and while we wait to hear what magic DoPS might conjure this time, let's do another one of these!

PlayerOffenseNotes
Mark Borowiecki

November 13, 2021
Kneeing - No supplemental discipline
Borowiecki was given a hearing* but supplemental discipline was deemed unnecessary
Andrei Svechnikov
7u3W0Tr.gif
November 26, 2021
Kneeing - $5,000.00
Svechnikov fined less than the maximum allowable, for a player of his salary
Nicolas Aube-Kubel
wUCBDn6.gif
October 23, 2021
Kneeing - $2,687.50
Aube-Kubel fined the maximum allowable, for a player of his salary
Neal Pionk
LV4Ukzg.gif
December 5, 2021
Kneeing - 2 game suspension
($58,750.00)
Offense was deemed beyond a fine. Salary is forfeited for each game suspended
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
*Compare that to, say Jani Hakanpaa who was involved in a knee-on-knee collision but was not offered a hearing and was also ruled to not extend his knee.

So... where do we land? Is kneeing worth a formal meeting but not supplemental discipline? A less-than-maximum fine? A maximum fine?? A suspension???

I guess we'll see where Ian Cole lands tomorrow!
