If anybody wants to help me understand why this was only a fine, when Labanc's three days earlier was a suspension, I'm all ears

If you left it as just this, I think it would also explain a lot:

I know but I think it's interesting to actually see the numbers. He fought the Sharks almost twice as much as he fought anyone else. Maybe we traumatized him or something and now we're getting Parros's Revenge.

One of these things is NOT like the others!
And those that are similar are all over the flippin' place...

But this also just shows that the DoPS does have the ability to diversify their rulings. They can fine less than the max; they can fine more than $5k (they just usually choose not to and quote "maximum allowable" instead).

I try not to compare across seasons too much - giving DoPS some benefit of the doubt that they can learn, grown, and set new precedents , but it is pretty comical that Panarin got the same fine as this:

and $5,000 more than this:

Panarin can be tossed down to the ground and punched for free, but can't throw a glove

Whoa, be careful. The NHL may fine you and have your parents fired.

After Ian Cole's spectacular knee-on-knee tonight and while we wait to hear what magic DoPS might conjure this time, let's do another one of these!

*Compare that to, say Jani Hakanpaa who was involved in a knee-on-knee collision but was not offered a hearing and was also ruled to not extend his knee.

So... where do we land? Is kneeing worth a formal meeting but not supplemental discipline? A less-than-maximum fine? A maximum fine?? A suspension???

I guess we'll see where Ian Cole lands tomorrow!
