I know he got a lot of flack for that, and the shorthanded goals against, but the Devils power play had sucked for years prior to his arrival.
Tampa & Washington both have/had great pps with him behind the bench. The Devils didn't have the personnel and still don't.
He did the best he could, and managed to get the most out of his players in that regard.

Our PP under Oates was still the second best it's been since Fetisov coached it in 02.
Johnny Mac took our PP from 8th in 01-02 to 30th in 03-04. Even that one year after the lockout when everything was called, our PP was still only 18th. Somehow in 09-10 it was 12th I believe.

You can have Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and whoever you want behind the bench, leading our PP... if you don't have the players to execute, you don't have ****.
You aren't going to score when your PPQB is Andry Greene, Marek Zidlicky, Adam Larsson or a forward (Zajac).
Lou doesn't seem to understand that and when you take into consideration that he watched guys like Niedermayer and Rafalski play right under his nose for years and years... it's mindboggling to see him stay "status quo" with the garbage we've had for the past couple of years.

I think our team is fine once you put Fayne in for Harrold/Volch. Ideally you get rid of Volch altogether and get Merrill or Gelinas in there, but that is probably too much.
Get gionta out of the lineup as well.

No, they don't grow on trees and who's to say that Lou tried or not. Are you saying that in the past 7 years, there's not a single PP QB who got traded?
We needed a option to replace Marty and got Schneider. He wasn't available, until Lou threw a offer Gillis couldn't refuse, apparently. Why can't it be the same for a PP QB?
Are we going to overpay, maybe, but that's the price you have to pay to get a premium piece on your roster.

Zidlicky's positional defense is bad but he's our best defenseman at getting the puck out of the zone, so he has some defensive zone value.

Possibly Carter to IR, active Tedenby and Lou continues to delay the roster decision.

What happened to that one pre-season game where the line of Elias-Josefson-Brunner played so well together? After not much has clicked so far this season I can't fathom why Deboer hasn't at least tried that line out again. I mean I can, it is Deboer after all but still.

Ehrhoff was another one. I remember really wanting him; then he ended up getting traded for almost nothing to another team.

Zidlicky is a lesser version of all the players I pointed out. He doesn't generate **** on the PP despite being a "offensive" d-man and his shot actually hits the net once every 10 shots if not less then that.
We need someone with a bomb that will actually generate some rebounds and distribute the puck to the open man because he's getting the attention from the opposing PK'er. Something Zidlicky hasn't done all too often since joining our team.
We're just happy to have someone like Zid cause we have no other options... but let's not act like he's better or on the same level as the players mentionned earlier. We're talking about defensemens that earn over 35/40 pts while playing over 23 minutes per game and that's what he racked up in his earlier years but he doesn't offer that type of production anymore.
Yup... Erhorff went for a minor leaguer and a mid round pick or something like that.
