I'd say one of the few setbacks of any of the Sabres prospect pool for this year was Marjala leaving the Remparts to go play J20 in Finland.
I didn’t follow him at all, but man Costantini’s stats dropped off a cliff after a promising freshman campaign at North Dakota. So that’s another setback?
Looks like he is transferring though.
For this next season with the Sabres, if we are going to give any of the Amerks a chance to make the jump, I think they should stop talking about Rosen (20), Kulich (19), and Savoie(19) making the big club.
We should be keeping 1-2 spots open and letting players like Rousek (24), Murrey (24), Weissbach (25), and Biro (25) fight to make the NHL. These players are more physically mature and have more developed games. They have put in their time in the organization and have earned the opportunity. Its time to find out if they are going to be NHL players. If they can make the jump, then at worst they become more valuable trade pieces.
I think it was a mistake starting him in the playoffs over players that had gotten them there and earned their spots. I get that it gave him a taste that will help him understand where he needs to go and improve his offseason focus, but I still think the timing was wrong. If they give Savoie a shot at the big club over that 24-25 year old group that have been developing their games in the organization for years and are ready to take their NHL shot, then what are they telling their prospects that were not drafted in the first round? It would be a bad message. If the Sabres wanted to see how Savoie did against higher competition so they could make some offseason planning decisions, then they should have their answer.I’d be shocked at Savoie not getting a shot at the main roster.

lol. and now here we go with the twisting and spinning, and the little clique jumping in. Acting like I am just a Savoie hater. I don't hate him at all. I am just being honest about what I see. I absolutely hope he becomes a top 6, 40 goal scorer for the Sabres, but that's not where we are right now.He will show up to camp just like all the players you are white knighting for. If he beats them the message to them will be that they aren’t as good at 24 and he is at 19. And they almost certainly aren’t.
Should Quinn and Cozens and Power and Krebs be sending apology letters to 24 year old AHL players because they’re in the show? Or just Savoie if he makes it?
It does make me happy seeing so many others assume he'll be able to make the jump but if we're talking about twisting, nobody thinks size and maturity doesn't matter. What you saw in Savoie in ROC was a player that just finished up a season and a couple rounds of playoffs joining a team where he probably didn't know the system or his teammates very well. He clearly lacked the confidence to play his aggressive style.lol. and now here we go with the twisting and spinning, and the little clique jumping in. Acting like I am just a Savoie hater. I never said anyone should get a job just because of age. I used age as an indicator of years in development. Make up stuff and twist it if you want. I expected no less from the Matt Savoie is our next savior fan club.
You can believe what you want. I believe that there is a group of more mature, more NHL ready players that deserve and have earned a shot before Matt Savoie. Sure, if he shows up at camp and shows he is better than them, has a more developed game than them, and is suddenly physically more capable than others of handling NHL action, then yeah, the best player gets the spot.
However, right now him actually being the best, most NHL ready player that can help the big club without being a liability, is quite frankly a pipe dream by Saviore fans that don't want things like size and maturity to matter. What I saw was a very skilled forward get physically overwhelmed. Quite frankly, he didn't look ready for the AHL, much less the NHL. He should not get a spot in the NHL over more ready players just because of his draft status. Screw that Jazz.
Some of those guys may not have the upside potential of Savoie (which is still just theory until it is achieved), but they are more NHL ready, both in physical maturity, and pro style game development. The Sabres have the top half of the roster built. It is the lower half of the roster that is a tire fire. Honestly, I would prefer to bring in more veteran players to fill the bottom half, but if I am going to take from the organization, I am taking a look at Murrey, Rousek, Biro, and Weissback, before Savoie on my bottom two lines right now. That was the point I was trying to make. I didn't say I think Savoie sucks. I said I do not think he is ready for the NHL. Big difference.Should he be gifted a spot? No of course not. I assume he'll just earn that spot. But a 23 or 24 year old (who are we talking? Murray? Weissbach? Rousek?) might not have the upside which points to what we hear from Adams and DG about challenging their young players.
Well it's all just theory if we're being literal. I believe, and you seem to disagree, that you put the most talented players into challenging situations to find out how well they rise to the occasion. Long term, it's best for the player and the organization. We can set up some ROC vets you've mentioned in Buffalo and they might not get embarrassed but they might not do anything for that matter. Some of those guys may not have the upside potential of Savoie (which is still just theory until it is achieved), but they are more NHL ready, both in physical maturity, and pro style game development. Bribe whoever to get Savoie to Rochester. It has done wonders for Rosey and Kozak's game and even Kisakov has flashed.
