Kessel got slashed, looked like right on the laces. Make your foot numb, he should be okay

On the laces is a dangerous place to hack. I don't take any pride in it, but I once broke a guy's foot by doing that.

I enjoyed Bure more than Gretzky. In Gretzky's prime in the 80's, half the goaltenders in the league back then would have no hope on getting a backup job today. You can say the equipment was smaller, but the goaltenders today are just plain better. Bure's been in the league since goaltending started to improve vastly, thus his goal-scoring skill is better than Gretzky's imo.

However, too many goals in a game can make it predictable. 10 goals in this game...8 coming in the first 7 minutes of the 3rd period. I just don't find that nerve-wracking.

Not nerve-wracking per se but a nice breath of fresh air, isn't it? Geez Bure was fun to watch god he was fast. I still think the refs screwed Van out of the cup.

I don't see how you can say the goaltending is weak when 3 of the 4 goals were all but unstoppable. The fourth I'll give you...but to call the goaltending a "weak link" is ridiculous. Patrick Roy wouldn't have stopped those first two shots.

Well, when you look at the fact that out of the 8 goals that have been scored against the US 4 of them were soft or misplayed, then yeah, I would say that it wasn't exactly a strong point.

He's also been giving up huge rebounds this tourney, and can't play the puck to save his life.

Well there are alot of tendons and small bones there. But he did put some weight on it going off.

i'm giving the first part of the russian game to him as a mulligan. i've yet to see him that shakey since, and i don't think he was himself. once he got his sea legs, he looked much better. one bad goal after being bombarded with a few quick ones isn't something i'm too concerned with. i AM concerned with the defense, though. Lee, Hunwick and especially Likens looked terrible, tonight.

Refs screwed Vancouver in 1994? What close Game 7 did you watch?

And no. I don't think it is a "breath of fresh air". I don't like floods of goals like there has been in this game. Games like this makes would-be important goals essentially meaningless, and I don't find that exciting.

Man, I'm close to forgetting the NHL even existed at this point. So much more exciting hockey being played here. Disappointed though, I really wanted Switzerland to pull through.

I still want to believe that Michael Tobler is an NHL darkhorse, and he just had an off game tonight :\

I was quite impressed with Phillipe Furrer though...does anyone know his NHL/draft status?

he played the puck pretty well this game actually...

he's not playing great overall but he's playing well enough to win if his team gives him the support they should.

Kessel looks like the next coming of Vincent Lacavalier

He will dominate as soon as he puts on a little more mustle

Crosby is ahead of him as far development but when they reach their primes i dont think the gap will be that big between them.

Thank god I stayed up for the 3rd. It was boring NHL hockey for the first two periods.

Another sloppy defensive game for USA. I do like the scoring but would prefer it not happen all at once like that.

I guess a win is a win but I sure wish the boys could make it a bit less nerve wracking.

Kessel does have some nice moves and great hockey instincts. Lee was pretty much unseen. Suter was not so poised and effective as he was last game.

I am wondering if the boys were expecting a walk in the park with Switzerland and had a bit of a let off? Maybe they need a scare like this to get ready to play each game with more intensity.

The Good: U.S. forwards continue to show they have the skill to put the puck in the net.

The Bad: U.S. defense was simply that-BAD!

The Ugly: Al Montoya. Its high time to give Schneider a chance.

Yikes!!!! :amazed:

Fun (albeit nerve-racking) game to watch, but some dubious trends continue. Montoya kind of had a role-reversal of the last game, instead of starting poorly and ending well, he did the opposite. I can't really fault him for the first two goals the Swiss scored in the 3rd period, but those last two he HAS to stop. The same criticisms I had of the Russian team apply to the U.S. No one is going to win this tourney by out-gunning the opposition. At least Russia seemed to learn that and had a much more sound 2nd game. I'd like to think the U.S. can fix their defensive shortcomings, but with this unit I'm not so sure. Too much non-chalant play, and Montoya doesn't appear to able to (as of right now) make up for it.

I tip my hat to the Swiss, they played a strong game, and it was just a case of the U.S. having too much firepower. The U.S. had a much more balanced effort from all their lines tonight, and Callahan, Schremp, Kessel, Dowell, and Brown IMO made a nice impression. It will be interesting to see what happens against Belarus, another team the U.S. should defeat rather easily. I wonder if Schneider will be given the start, or will be Montoya be given a chance at redemption in order to build up for an important game against the Czechs? Whatever happens, the coaching staff needs to wake this defense up and hope Montoya settles himself down, if not, the U.S. won't even come close to sniffing gold. Canada is clearly the class of this year's tourney, and I'm not ashamed to admit that by any stretch.

One more thing: Phil Kessel!

Kessel was the best player on the ice tonight. You can tell he's still really nervous when he's out there, but he's gaining confidence tonight. Could have had a few goals, made a ton of beautiful moves and the a few passes too....Hopefully his ankle is alright, nice no call on that....Look for him to start getting some powerplay time hopefully.

Andy Brickley made the point that with the late game and an underdog opponent the U.S. could have set themselves up for a scare, and they did. Despite the Swiss dictating the play for much of the game, the U.S. had a three goal lead in the 3rd, and that should have been enough for a comfortable win. If the defense would have played a bit tighter, and Montoya wouldn't have laid a couple eggs, that would have been the case. The U.S. needs to clean Belarus clock in all facets of the game on Wed. Nothing short of a complete thrashing will suffice IMO.

No, I think they expected a hard game, they just didn't come out with the passion they did against russia. I think the Swiss played a lot like Finland does where they basically trap the other team for a long time to keep themselves in the game and strike really quick after the other team gets mentally tired.

The problems the defense are experiencing are all correctable. I thought Brian Lee looked useless. I'm guessing Kessel and Montoya won't play tomorrow so Schremp will get more time. I'd rather have Montoya let in those kinds of goals now to prepare himself unlike what happend to Fleury last year where he basically didn't have to do anything until it was too late.

He reminds me of a buddy I play hockey with. Great moves, but get's in too tight when he should use his wrist-shot. I look for Kessel to do that as the tourney progresses. Interesting to see him out there with two minutes to go in the 3rd.

and the score is just as bad, if not worse.

It's a shame really, because Montoya was having a sharp game until the 3rd period. He clearly got rattled after those two quick goals, which were because of defensive lapses. I could have scored those goals.
