Obviously I'll seem like a homer, I mean I am proudly Canadien, but I can see this game coming down to goaltending, and I have to give the Edge to Canada.

I'll say CAN 3 RUS 2

It's shaping up to be a classic and hopefully it will live up to it.

anyone knows who the referee is for this game?

if by any chance Paul Devorski officiates another Russian game, I will just quit watching hockey and become a soccer fan

Game 33: Esposizioni, 20:30, RUS - CAN (Referee Dennis LaRue)

Speculating about the outcome is rather useless but then again most things in life are so here goes. Had the game been played in a smaller rink I'd still think Canada would win. With a larger ice surface and really strict referee the uberfast russians have the advantage if they play with discipline and as a team. A collection of individuals always loses to a team. Can the russians skate in circles around juggernauts like Pronger? Physicality has always been a north american component worth mentioning but how does one translate it to ice when almost everything is being whistled. This will be the most interesting match of the night. Slight edge to slavic snipers.

The referee is LaRue? HAHA. The Russians won't like that.

I remember in Salt Lake City, LaRue called only 1 minor penalty against Canada during their entire quarterfinal game vs. Finland.

They have got to be kidding me. There must be 10 other referees but they have to appoint an american one for Russia-Canada game. Why??????? I guess now it is clear who will have an advantage in penalties now..

Let the game itself be a heated affair, not the posts in this thread. Trolling, baiting and flaming won't be tolerated.

The thing is, this is the one thread you have no right to shut down :)
Seriously, you've got to let fans get old-school nasty for this one game!

Why ? In game Russia vs. Latvia he was good as I remember. If he continues to referee like he did before here and everything will be fine.

and don't assume that the rest of the world has a passion for CCup/WCup.

Wow I stand corrected, I forgot about the Soviet domination over the WHA. I'll repeat again, best on best. Not best against struggling 2nd tier league, not Soviet best vs conference all-star best. Best on Best.

And don't give me the we never had home advantage B.S.. The Red Army was a team that practiced, ate, slept and lived together, they should have had the advantage in every tournament they played. They were a perfect hybrid of army dicisipline and training techniques meeting with sports. Except they could never beat Canada when it counted.

Exactly if fans from hockey mad nations like Russia and Canada can't descend into the mud with the insults, exaggeration and the worst in cultural stereotypes about who's nation reigns superior, what's the fricking point? This will be fun.

:shakehead Another flat-earth upholding Canadian... Conviniently picked up themost shaky claim, forgetting about similar two other side

1) What's Red Army?
2) Whatever you mean by that what does it have to do wit Russia-Canada?
3) If it has something to do with Russia-Canada, what's the count of "Red Army" vs NHL?
4) What does a Canada Cup have to do with a legit international competition? Ever heard of Izvestija Cup? Want to know the count there?

1. Red Army was the de facto Soviet national team. The best players in the Soviet Union were placed on that team and played together year round. Very few players from outside Red Army made the national team. Helmut Balderis was a notable exception.

2. See above.

3. Since when did the Boston Bruins or Buffalo Sabres become Canada's national team? I'm sure if Canada took our best players and played together all the time, it might beat Moscow Dynamo.

4. Right. A best-on-best tournament vs. one where the Soviets got to use their absolute best against Canadian amateurs.

Flat earth is right.

So I'll repeat it: What the hell is Red Army?
