Hopefully a good game, not like the superbowl where the refs ruined it. GO Russia! Both teams arre loaded should be great! :yo:

I usually always root for Canada in Intl competition (when they aren't playing the USA) but I think I am going to root for the Russians today, simply because I would give anything to see the reaction on this board if Canada loses and doesn't medal at all.

The Canadian arrogance on this board for the last year or so regarding this tournament was like nothing I have ever seen, with people saying how much better Canada is then everyone else, how it will be a bunch of blowouts etc. etc.

I think Russia could deliver a big slice of humble pie to alot of you guys, and you should eat every bite of it.

Im pulling for Russia 100%.. Although I acknowledge Canada has been struggling, and Russia has been playing well.. I have this strange gut feeling that the refs will screw us again. I mean, Russia was shorthanded 7 times against the US, and were on the powerplay only twice.. These guys are NHL players (most), and they're not familiar with the rules? hmmm... I think the refs will have a big say in this game.

PLEASE RUSSIA! DONT LET US DOWN AGAIN! :handclap: :yo: :handclap: :handclap:

Again? What, winning the silver in 1998 didn't count for anything?

Geez, six pages and we're still four hours from puck-drop? Must be Canada-Russia. :)

I'm a Canadian so I naturally want Canada to win, but I'm by no means confident of the outcome. If Canada doesn't smarten up and play better than they have, they could be in for a whipping as this Russian squad can score with the best of them.

Ofcourse it counted for something, but silver is one thing, gold is another. That was 8 years ago. Russia is an elite hockey nation, we should be winning these tournaments, not finishing second or third.

against a team with 11 guys who weren't in the NHL...

Kind of hard for Russia to win international hockey tournaments when they have to play against the Big Red and White Machine.

I hear this more from the russians than from anyone else here. Even when canada wins 5-0, it was still the fault of the refs.

Russia is an elite hockey country, always has and always will be. Fully cabable of wining any tournament just like Canada etc....
This game is going to be great and I (like everyone else here) have no idea who will win until its over. It's a toss up. 50/50 chance you are right. Whoever wants it more will win.....

good luck to the players and coutrymen of both teams! Let's enjoy this day, all the matchups are going to be great! A good day for hockey! Remember its a hockey game and this won't define anyone's life...Have fun and enjoy it! Go Canada!

I just wish I could watch it! I'm stuck at work and have the crappy TSN updates every minute.

I still think that we're going to get destroyed. If we skate like we've been the last few days, the Russian kids are going to score 10 goals each because you know they're going to be absolutely flying.

The thing is, this is the one thread you have no right to shut down :)
Seriously, you've got to let fans get old-school nasty for this one game!

No, we dont have to let you get "old school nasty". We are all capable of discussing this game without flaming and trolling. If anybody chooses to violate the rules of this site (that you all agreed to when you signed up) then we will act accordingly.

Because you dont know what its like to deal with the refs every single game of every single tournament. Remember in salt lake when Canada's women faced awful refs in the gold medal game? Thats what Russia faces every game.

This doesn't sound like paranoia. Not at all.

Add there loss to Finland and staying without any medals. It hurts. :sarcasm:

It was Gold or bust for Canada in Nagano, the players have talked about it many times after the fact how they regretted not taking the bronze medal game more seriously.

It's amazing going round to the NHL game day threads also.

If you believe the fans, then 30 out of 30 teams are being screwed over by the refs for the majority of the year. I guess it must be natural to remember the calls that went against your team and forget the calls that went against the opponents.

I watched the Russia-USA game closely yesterday and Devorski was out of his mind ant-Russian. This was blatantly trying to help team USA. Unfortunately the Olympic commitee sent the investigator to watch whether Sweden played hard rather to keep an eye on Devorski. What he attempted to do to Russia yesterday was pathetic and destroys the integrity of hockey.

That is true.

Penalty against your team: "Damn referees. Screwing us again. Trying to dictate the outcome of this game. I hope they are this referee is fined and suspended, or banned from the league."

Penalty against your opponent: "Great call. Come on boys, here is your chance. Now is the time to seize control of this game. Score one on the powerplay."

We are talking about 11 players not in the NHL actually ;)

I keep seeing people say that the referees screwed the Russians over yesterday, but I find it funny hearing these claims when I look at the game statistics.

I want to say, however, that I did not watch the game, so I can't give a 100% informed opinion on the matter.

Nonetheless, here are some game statistics from the game:

Penalty minutes:
U.S.A. = 8
Russia = 12

Time on Power Play:
U.S.A. = 9:26
Russia = 7.:44

Yes U.S.A. had an advantage in both of those areas, but it was hardly a large advantage. Yet people will try to convince you that the referees were completely one-sided.

If the referees were completely one-sided as people claim, then you would expect the gap in penalty minutes to be much larger than 4 minutes, and the gap in time on power play to be much larger than 1:42.

Seems it is quite possible that people are merely making excuses for the fact that Russia had a hard time beating the supposedly "old and slow Americans".

I hate to say this but I don't have a good feeling about today's game. Canada hasn't beat Russia in an Olympic game since 1960.

USA had something like 4 or 5 powerplays in a row during that game, and not a single of those penatlies were warranted. Meanwhile American players were running the Russian goaltenders, clutching and grabbing, just committing fouls left and right that were going unpenalized. This was when the game was 2-0 and 3-1, Devorski just wanted to even it up for the Americans.
