It wasn't a whole lot better upstairs. Other than the Chicago game a few years ago during the snowstorm, I don't recall being at a game with so few people.

Announced attendance was 10,901. I think that's the lowest in quite some time, no? Wasn't the low, non-snow attendance last year something like 11k and change, which itself was a non-snow low? Either way, if what they said about the opener being the most profitable regular season game ever was true, the number doesn't really matter. If they ever start winning, they'll fill the building, and will have more cash flow. Maybe this will lead to them being a cap team in 5+ years.

thoughts after watching the first three games...

- team is lacking a player or players who will get it on the forecheck and throw big hits to swing the momentum...even someone who will throw down when needed. i'm not a fan of staged fights but sometimes it can stop a team in its tracks.

- powerplay is atrocious. it's fine to get the puck to the point and fire shots on net but there better be someone in front screening and waiting to pounce on the loose change. someone has to pay the price in front. and versteeg needs to be on the left side of the ice waiting for a one-timer on the PP.

- team needs another top 3 pick this year. i'm fine with tanking or stealth tanking or whatever you wanna call it, but as other posters have mentioned, the fans will be pissed and ticket sales will plummet even further. but that's fine because it needs to be done to get this team competitive again, especially while there is a pretty good core of youth with faulk, rask, hanifin and skinner who are unfortunately maturing in a losing atmosphere.

- jstaal needs to be shot out of a cannon. i cringed at his post-game comments last night when he said there are a lot of young guys on the team who look up to guys like him to lead and set an example. total lip service BS. i don't wanna hear that out of his mouth unless he's ready to actually do it...you'd think a guy who grew up on the farm in canada would know the meaning of hard work. rest on your laurels much?

end rant for now.

I realize without skill/talent, it's hard to execute any offensive system, but it seemed, at least last night, what the Canes mainly try to do is get the puck in deep, cycle it, get it back to the point for a shot and get traffic and collect rebounds. The problem, is they don't have a Holmstrom that makes life tough on the defense and goalie. The only guy that seemed to do that at all was Nestrasil.

And I don't know if it's coaching or the players or both, but the amount of times they have had defensive breakdowns / looked like the keystone cops this season (1 period in Detroit and most of the game last night) is a bit surprising. I know it's early, but we can't use the "its the 1st year of a new system" excuse.

Gaudreau appears to be someone that's been here before. He knows about Rocky's fondness for Russians. He know's about BD58's posting style, etc...

i wonder how much of a let down the small crowd was for the team? gotta be hard mentally for them to play in front of an amped up, packed house on saturday and then have only family and friends show up last night.

Some observations from near ice level:
For the hate EStaal is getting in this thread, I thought he actually looked pretty decent. Speed wise it seemed like he gained back that step he lost last year. Still isn't generating enough chances, but they'll come.

Lack gives up an unnerving amount of rebounds, even on some very weak shots. "Could the difference in quality between our two goaltenders be any more obvious at this point in the season?" ****ing classic line bud.

For as decent as Murphy looks when he has the puck on his stick, he's ****ing clueless in his own end without it. At one point he was stuck out there with Faulk and you could see Faulk's frustration. He was even trying to push Murphy to where he should be.

Skinner looked good at times, but he's settling for weak shots instead of waiting that extra .5 second for something else to possibly open up.

Tough to evaluate live in the lowers, but we looked ****ing terrible in every aspect.

I'm not sure I completely agree with you Rod. I do agree E. Staal looked better than many were giving him credit for, but I did not see the speed you speak of. Staal used to be able to beat guys to the puck in the neutral zone, used to be able to beat guys down the wing and use his shot. I didn't see either of those last night. He looked slow to me.

Agree on Lack and what I referred to as loose change. Too much of that, but it could be nerves of a first game so I'll wait on that.

Skinner, and the Canes in general either seemed to shoot too soon and causing a easy save, or held to long and then would get it blocked. It's easy for me sitting up in the stands to point that out though.
