Games you are currently playing - Part 7

Have played about 2.5 hours of the new Doom and am really enjoying it. I dig the shield and melee stuff, even if the shield is so OP/fun that it makes me use my gun less (so far). The flow of this game is perfect and the difficulty (or lack thereof, so far) is great for my 41 year old self.

I know the previous one got great reception but it felt too intense/non-stop for me, I prefer this one.
I've only played the 2016 one, but am definitely interested in Eternal and this one. Just need to be in the right mood at the right time to start them.

Everyone is going to have their preference on which one they liked more, but I think everyone should applaud them for changing up the gameplay every time out instead of feeding us essentially the same game over and over again. As far as I've heard, game runs great, too, which should also be applauded.

It’s got to be ID Tech. Indiana Jones used it and performance on that game is fantastic. Microsoft should be trying to push it on other franchises if they can.

I don't think that we should applaud them for changing the gameplay every time. That Habs Fan seems to like the The Dark Ages partly because it undid the changes that Eternal made. When Eternal came out, a lot of gamers were disappointed that it was so different from DOOM (2016). With The Dark Ages, they've seemingly rolled most of those changes back, but then just added a whole bunch of different changes that not everyone is a fan of. I think that most people just want more DOOM (2016), but with better graphics and new weapons and enemies. I, personally, wasn't a fan of even that and want more DOOM (1993), but with better graphics and new weapons and enemies. Most people want the same gameplay that they enjoy, just updated. No one asked for platforming, double jumping, parrying or dragon/mech riding in a DOOM game.

And other people liked the changes Eternal made and will be disappointed they went away from that. But many people like all of them, even if they prefer one to the others, and they are widely considered great games.

No doubt people would say they just want more DOOM (2016), but to quote Henry Ford, "If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." People don't know what they want. I commend them for taking risks (which far too many studios are scared to do), putting in the extra work to change, and still coming out with a great game.

I think even if they gave people what they think they wanted, some people would end up being disappointed with that. Marginally better graphics that most people wouldn't notice, a few different guns, and some different looking monsters would feel stale and repetitive. I've had conversations about that on here about GoW: Ragnarok. Sure, they added a weapon, more enemy variety, new animations, etc. On paper, it's a better game than GoW 2018, but since it was a continuation without a whole lot of difference, it didn't really feel like it was. Others have said the same about Horizon. It's obviously a pretty common criticism of Ubisoft. Even FromSoft fan bois (which I consider myself one) have started expressing some desire for them to switch up the Souls combat after Elden Ring, a la Sekiro and Bloodborne.

None of this is to say they are above criticism. The dragon stuff in the new one in particular looks horrendous. But I'm glad there are major studios out there stilling taking swings.

I've been in a gaming rut lately, so I am giving Bioshock another playthrough, as it almost always solves my gaming blues. I swear all these years later I still find new things, or maybe my memory is just going to shit, but either way Bioshock always just hits the spot for me

Played the first level of Doom: The Dark Ages and liked it but apparently path tracing won't be available until sometime in June so I will be waiting until then to continue.

I started two new to me games today, only finished the first level of each so far:

Lamplighter's League - It's an XCOM like game except in an Indiana Jones like theme of a team of treasure hunters. There's some exploration in between fights which I appreciate in this genre. The cutscenes are well done with some good voice acting so far too.

Turok - I never played them, I got the three Turok games in a Humble Bundle some time last year. Finally decided to give the first one a go. I finished the first level and it's a lot of fun.

Replaying Doom (2016) and I gotta say... this is as close to a perfect single-player shooter as I've ever played. I forgot how much I love it.

I also forgot how damn fast the default stick settings were!

I'm an old man now, I had to drop those down to like the 20-30 percent range, lol

Played through Bioshock to try to get out of my gaming rut and still nothing new is calling to me, so I'm going to go back to GTA 5 ( this time on XB series X) for the first time since my original playthrough on the PS3 over a decade ago

I'm going to be doing the same thing shortly when I finish the Lost Judgment DLC, PS5 though

I gave up on The Lamplighter's League. The first 10 hours or so were really fun but I feel like the folly of many turn based tactics game like this of having difficulty ramp up too quickly hits here. You could explore mission areas between fights and take enemies out with stealth abilities. I took out as many enemies as I could with my team of 4 (the party limit for this particular mission) and had to fight 23 enemies while more were spawning in spawners 4-5 turns later. I don't get how the game expects you to win those fights. One one character has the ability to attack more than one enemy at a time, there's so many that grenades aren't even useful enough since they're so spread out anyway, and none of them can be one shotted regardless of what ability you have.

I was reading reviews about it and a lot of people said the difficulty spike was crazy. I saw it at like the 11-12 hour mark and it was enough to turn me off from the game entirely. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the first 10 hours...

I also tried starting Turok 2 and while there's some improvements like hitboxes allowing for head shots and better movement in general, the same issue with level design is here from the first except each level is twice as long. Enemies respawn in both Turok 1 & 2 so if you miss something and try to run around looking for what you missed, you still have to fight enemies again. It felt like such a chore. It took me over an hour to complete the first level because there was one objective that was hidden behind some debris that I ran past multiple times without noticing... The worst is that there are even more objectives to find in Turok 2 so you're even more likely to miss something...

I still wanted to give Turok 3 a shot. I finished the first mission and it seems like they really fixed their issue with the way the missions worked of finding keys and other objectives. It improves on the game play improvements of the second as well. I know Turok 3 is supposed to be really short but I really enjoyed the first mission. I see myself blowing through this one.

Decided to try a few titles on GamePass this weekend.

First was Metaphor ReFantazio. Read so many great things about it, figured I'd give it a shot.

I played a few hours and uninstalled it. Just does not appeal to me at all. For context, I did not like the Persona games either so that probably makes sense.

Tried Dredge, and it has a really satisfying game loop. A few tweaks I'd like to see, but really enjoyed it. I'll probably keep playing that in the background when I have only a short amount of time.

Now back to Clair Obscur before I start KCD2.

Finished up the Lost Judgment DLC (top 5 all time for me), so now I'm trying my hand at GTAV for the first time in over a decade, still pretty early, doing the Michael and Franklin stolen boat mission. According to the trophy list, only 38% of players have finished the second mission in the game while 66% have at least some online time, and that right there is why we've waited so long for VI. GTA Online has been such a massive money maker that there's been no need to make a new game.

I recently finished the main quest in Oblivion Remastered. I last played Oblivion in 2006 and didn't remember much, but memories flooded back as I played the remaster, which was cool. One thing that I did remember all this time, though, is that I used to run through the Oblivion gates, avoiding combat, because they got so repetitive and boring. Thankfully, that still works just as well as it did 19 years ago.

I'm now doing the Shivering Isles DLC, which doesn't seem very familiar so far, so that's cool to finally find something in the game that I either haven't played before or don't remember. Also, it seems pretty large and lengthy, similar to Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC. If anyone has finished Oblivion Remastered and missed it, you start it by visiting an island just to the east of the Imperial City, where there may be a map marker that reads "Strange Door."

Played them all separately in their original versions which I thought were all pretty solid, assuming these are remasters? Unless they totally f'd them up, it should be more than worth the price
Apparently it has the complete remake of the first game and a remaster of the second one. 12 bucks for three games is a pretty easy gamble

I really enjoyed Mafia 1 & 2, I thought Mafia 3 was pretty weak. I gave up after a few hours after thinking the game play was pretty bad, particularly the driving, and the story didn't feel like it was getting anywhere.
