Have played about 2.5 hours of the new Doom and am really enjoying it. I dig the shield and melee stuff, even if the shield is so OP/fun that it makes me use my gun less (so far). The flow of this game is perfect and the difficulty (or lack thereof, so far) is great for my 41 year old self.

I know the previous one got great reception but it felt too intense/non-stop for me, I prefer this one.

I've only played the 2016 one, but am definitely interested in Eternal and this one. Just need to be in the right mood at the right time to start them.

Everyone is going to have their preference on which one they liked more, but I think everyone should applaud them for changing up the gameplay every time out instead of feeding us essentially the same game over and over again. As far as I've heard, game runs great, too, which should also be applauded.

It’s got to be ID Tech. Indiana Jones used it and performance on that game is fantastic. Microsoft should be trying to push it on other franchises if they can.

I don't think that we should applaud them for changing the gameplay every time. That Habs Fan seems to like the The Dark Ages partly because it undid the changes that Eternal made. When Eternal came out, a lot of gamers were disappointed that it was so different from DOOM (2016). With The Dark Ages, they've seemingly rolled most of those changes back, but then just added a whole bunch of different changes that not everyone is a fan of. I think that most people just want more DOOM (2016), but with better graphics and new weapons and enemies. I, personally, wasn't a fan of even that and want more DOOM (1993), but with better graphics and new weapons and enemies. Most people want the same gameplay that they enjoy, just updated. No one asked for platforming, double jumping, parrying or dragon/mech riding in a DOOM game.

And other people liked the changes Eternal made and will be disappointed they went away from that. But many people like all of them, even if they prefer one to the others, and they are widely considered great games.

No doubt people would say they just want more DOOM (2016), but to quote Henry Ford, "If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." People don't know what they want. I commend them for taking risks (which far too many studios are scared to do), putting in the extra work to change, and still coming out with a great game.

I think even if they gave people what they think they wanted, some people would end up being disappointed with that. Marginally better graphics that most people wouldn't notice, a few different guns, and some different looking monsters would feel stale and repetitive. I've had conversations about that on here about GoW: Ragnarok. Sure, they added a weapon, more enemy variety, new animations, etc. On paper, it's a better game than GoW 2018, but since it was a continuation without a whole lot of difference, it didn't really feel like it was. Others have said the same about Horizon. It's obviously a pretty common criticism of Ubisoft. Even FromSoft fan bois (which I consider myself one) have started expressing some desire for them to switch up the Souls combat after Elden Ring, a la Sekiro and Bloodborne.

None of this is to say they are above criticism. The dragon stuff in the new one in particular looks horrendous. But I'm glad there are major studios out there stilling taking swings.
