Just finished with Lost Ark closed Beta. It'll be something I play for awhile when it goes live. Think Diablo meets World of Warcraft into one.

I finished Divinity Original Sin 2 and wanted to play something faster paced. I don't know why I thought of it but started playing Soldier of Fortune that I purchased on GoG a year or two ago. It's from 2000 and it's pretty much cheesy 90s action movie the game. It's a ton of mindless fun. I remember playing it when I was younger because it was the first shooter that really let you hit different limbs and have enemies react. It was the first game I've ever seen where if you shot a guy in the leg with a shotgun, his leg got blown off. I specifically remember it being in articles about how it was too violent and won't somebody please think of the children?! It definitely feels a bit outdated, for some reason the controls are a bit slippery but it's not a big deal. The game even on medium is pretty easy, there's no need to hide behind cover, just run right up to people and blast them in the face. It's some good mindless fun while reliving some nostalgia.

Oh man. Lots.

Doing a hard mode playthrough of Metroid Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. I’m on a real Metroid kick.

Picked up Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity again. I’m a big fan of stupid hack and slash action.

Started Star Fox 64 3DS and DKC Tropical Freeze.

And there’s more to come. I’m probably gonna get the GTA Trilogy because I never played the originals before.

Lmao your avatar is one of the best pics on the internet.

I finally got a PS5 a month or so ago. It's my first Playstation console since PS2. So I'm playing through a bunch of the great PS4 games I missed out on, and I can't help but feel they all sort of feel the same. And by that, I mean third person, over the shoulder point of view, that places most of its emphasis on creating a movie-like experience with great graphics and an emphasis on story. To elaborate, I've been playing a bit of Spiderman, God of War, the Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Resident Evil 2 Remake. I'm really enjoying God of War the most, but damn they all kind of feel like the same developer made them.

PlayStation has some of the best AAA games on the market full stop, but you do have to like the action-adventure/RPG style of game to appreciate them....in general of course.

I was in a similar position. I had a PS3, but mostly just played CoD and sports games. Then I got a PS5 in April and started working my way through some of the PS+ collection. God of War and The Last of Us were the first 2 I played and I thoroughly enjoyed both, especially God of War. Maybe the same fatigue you have is what set in with me when I played Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, TLOU2, and Batman Arkham Knight. I still liked them, but not nearly as much.

It's still 3rd person and RPG, but Bloodborne is available in the PS+ collection and is much more focused on combat. The cut scenes are pretty limited and mostly to introduce bosses. The story is very vague. I watched a couple YouTube videos explaining it after I played it and thought "THAT'S the game I was playing?!?" Fair warning, it can be extremely challenging. There's no difficulty setting. It's just permanently set at f***ing hard. At least for me. There's a couple of bosses, even one that's very early in game, where it felt like I was banging my head against a wall and would never be able to beat. There's also not much direction telling you where to go. There's no map. You've got to experiment a little to find out when to use certain items. There's absolutely no hand holding. By the end, though, I was addicted. I ended up playing it a second time following a guide so I didn't miss anything (which I missed a bunch of stuff in the first play through). I'm now playing the developer's next game, Sekiro, which is both in the same vein and drastically different when it comes to art direction, movement, combat, and less RPG-y. It's probably taking over as my favorite game. I'd recommend both, but again, they're hard.

Hollow Knight is also on my short list. It's a 2D crowd funded indie game. I'm really drawn to the art direction, but I've read that it is also quite challenging. Not sure what it is about me being drawn to difficult games . It's supposed to be really good, though, and would change up your 3rd person RPG streak.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually saving Bloodborne (and the Demons Souls remake) for when I've completed more of my backlog. I'm a huge Souls fan and am excited to finally play those two games along with Sekiro. Also want to get the Shadow of the Colossus remake soon too (50% off now).

I love that game. I have it on my Switch and made it like 50-60% through and got stuck. I really don't know where to go next aside from the Gladiator Coliseum, I need to do some research as I got tired aimlessly running around.

Oh I see. You're much more of gamer than me, just not on PlayStation specifically

I just went cold turkey from all video games for like 10 years. It was a whole new world for me when I got my PS5.

Yeah definitely, I get that. I guess I'll just need to spread out the first party games with third party titles that have more variety/genres.
Yeah, it is more that you are just crushing a massive backlog built up over 5 or so years. Whereas Sony might release 2 or 3 of these insanely polished AAA 3rd person cinematic games a year at most. Although, I do believe Sony has a sizable investment in an upcoming 1st person shooter made by some ex-Treyarch devs. Although, I would say games like God of War/Ghost of Tsushima are notably different than the Naughty Dog games in playstyle, and Horizon is a bit out in leftfield in how to classify. Big thing is though, if you've been a big PC or X-Box guy during this time period, you've likely crushed most of the big FPS or WRPGs made by 3rd parties or previously 3rd party (Bethesda, iD, Obsidian, etc).

If you've finished Bloodborne and are finishing Sekiro, which is even harder imo, Hollow Knight will be a breeze. It wasn't that hard tbh. That said, it's an amazing game, one of the best of the decade.

Nobody asked for this but my thoughts on the PS5 exclusives

FF7 integrade

For some reason this game and DLC is still an exclusive. Its not even on PC yet. I have no idea why the window is so long. I highly recommend it. Extremely good. Even Hard mode is a lot of fun, and I never play games on hard mode.

Returnal

The gameplay is extremely good, the problem is the procedural elements are horrible. You'll often get runs where you're scrambling to find a gun or the portal to the next biome spawned like 20 minutes away and its better to just restart. I dont like this game.

Ratchet and Clank

This game is extremely good and I would say with FF7 is the only game graphically that I really consider next gen quality. However, I dont like that they added a dodge to the game. It made the controls worse and the gameplay overly complicated. I prefer just having a jump. I rate the game high but I still prefer the gameplay of the original reboot. That said the story (while nothing special) is miles better than the previous game.

Demon's Souls

This game I consider genuinely great, and the visuals are awesome, especially the player character faces, however, its literally just the PS3 game with almost nothing changed. Which is good or bad depending on how you feel about that.

Astro's Playroom

Extremely good. Actually fun to 100%. I rate it high, and its free which is even better.

Deathloop

Haven't played it.

Notable Games that are cross-gen

-------

Death Stranding

This game is also on PC, not on Xbox. Its terrible, but some people think its good and its cheap even when its not on sale. Pick it up for $20 if you're gonna play it.

Ghost of Tsushima

Quite honestly its hard to even consider this a PS5 game. Unlike FF7 they didn't change the graphics, load times were already fast, and the all the DLC is available on PS4. I put it here because its technically a native PS5 title. I also rate it high. Its Assassins Creed but actually good. Only like 4 or 5 enemy types (even including bosses) unfortunately.

Miles Morales

I rate this very high, and I give it bonus points for it being short and priced fairly. Its on PS4 but the graphics are significantly better on PS5. 60fps with raytracing.

Sackboy

A genuinely good game even if you're a big boy grown up. The levels with licensed music are insanely good. If you like Mario 3d world you'll like this game. I can't remember if this has multiplayer but if it does it'll definitely be fun to play with your girlfriend or something. Although the game actually gets kind of hard at points. The graphics on PS5 are significantly better than on PS4 but if I remember right its 60fps on ps4 too.

Destruction All Stars

This game actually could have been good, but they just didn't nail the handling or the combat, so basically the whole game is bad. I'd like a sequel to this game but this time good.

Nioh 2

So this game is actually an exclusive surprisingly I keep forgetting. Its not good. The damage is just totally out of whack and theres like 3 enemy types you face over and over for 40-50 hours.

Kena Bridge of Spirits

This game is really good. Thats all I have to say. Its old school, but still very good. Like none of the cutscenes are in-engine though they're all video interestingly, so its not really showing off the PS5s power much to speak of.

Thats it as far as I know. Some others got 60 fps patches but no native ports. I'm sure I'm forgetting some indie games like Bugsnax 2 or something.

My must play games:

FF7, Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank and Astros Playroom.

I recommend Demon's Souls, however if you dont have patience for difficulty find a "overpowered early" guide on youtube and you'll have a much funner time. Lots of ways to make Demon's Souls easy.

I actually 'finished' Sekiro last night, but it was the ending that apparently cut out like a 1/4th of the game

I think I'm going to replay and follow a guide. Hopefully it will go a lot faster now that I'm used to everything. If I had a complaint about FromSoftware, it would be shit like this. I don't want to follow a guide as to avoid spoilers, but I also don't want to miss out on stuff because I didn't. I also don't want to sink hours upon hours into a game to realize that I have to replay everything. Same shit happened to me with Bloodborne.

Good to know about Hollow Knight, though. It looks so cool and the fact it's such a smaller developer is awesome. And thanks to Frankie I'm realizing it would be nice to switch up the 3rd person RPG thing every once in a while.

After beating Sekiro, I'm back to Bloodborne. Even though it's an older game, Sekiro makes me appreciate it even more. After that, will probably try Dark Souls remastered.

Guardians of the galaxy is a pretty good showcase for why 1080p is sort of an outdated resolution. You can change the modes on the fly.

The new raytracing update (I think it dropped yesterday) now gives the game 3 resolutions on ps5. Quality mode (4k30 fps) ray tracing mode (1440p 30 fps) and performance mode (1080p60). The 1080p mode is just not high enough and breaks the hair effects. 1440p seems just enough.

Going back to Back for Blood to attempt to finish it before dipping my toes into Forza for a bit, I never stick with the racing games very long so it being on gamepass is a huge bonus

Scratch the Back for blood as I see there is no offline yet, so Forza it is

I started playing Gunfire Reborn last night. It's a roguelite co-op FPS that apparently just got released out of early access. A friend of mine saw it and wanted to give it a try. We played 4 hours straight last night. It's actually a ton of fun.

Medieval Kingdoms Total War 1212AD. It’s a fantastic, free mod for Total War Attila.

Lots of fun to be had with single player campaign, multiplayer battles, and even a multiplayer campaign.

Almost done with Judgment on PS4, pretty cool game if you're a Yakuza fan and didn't like JRPG turn in the newest one. I'll be getting Lost Judgment eventually. Picked up Witcher 3 (again) for 10 and Resident Evil village for 20, and I'll probably go with the former first as I'm sure the wife wants to watch me play the later. I'm eyeing Actraiser Resurrection for a sale, it's relatively new and 30 seems a bit high. I have no idea way I never played the original SNES version, I'm guessing my video store never had it in to rent.

Started up Dishonored 2 on Series S thanks to GP, it's a great sequel so far. Playing Horizon off and on also. Picked up Bloodstained: Ritual of something because it looks more like the "vania" part of Metroidvania, apparently its a Kickstarter game, haven't tried it out yet but it's on sale in the marketplace for 16 down from 40, and I used the five bucks Microsoft sent me so I only paid 11, felt like a low risk/high reward move.

Haven't restarted Bloodborne yet. Im thinking of keeping it for the holidays. For some reason, I booted up Demon Souls (PS3, not the remake on the PS5) for the first time. Only played a few minutes, but I didn't expect the gameplay to be this good. I might give it a try, if not before Bloodborne, then right after.

A lot of people don't realize this. That game is the same basic mechanics that From Soft then used to make a whole new genre of game. I remember trading in my 360 for a PS3 to buy Demon Souls and the guys at Gamestop actively telling me not to get it. Too hard, no direction, no story. Funny to think now a From Soft game is a can't miss AAA release using those exact principals and people love them.
