Games Tonight Affecting Sens

Only real contender for Montreal to worry about is Detroit. If they beat them tomorrow, the race is effectively over. However Detroit has a game in hand and if they can beat mtl tomorroe, then it gets a bit more interesting. Maybe one of us or Toronto can beat MTL as well this weekend, that would fully open the window for the wings.

Long shot but it’s possible. Habs still gotta win tomorrow
It's a shame they both can't miss.

Rangers lost 5-1.

We clinch tomorrow if:
1. We win in any fashion against the Jackets.
2. Detroit loses in any fashion against the Habs.
3. We get at least one point against the Jackets.
I believe one and two are true.

However, if we get an OTL loss and Detroit wins in regulation, we would not clinch. Because Detroit could get to 91 points and 34 RW, which would give them the edge over our 33 RW.

Detroit has to win ALL the remaining games on their schedule just to get to 91 points. In other words they need to win the 6 remaining games just to catch Ottawa.

Ottawa has to go 0-5 for the Detroit to even have a chance of that. If Ottawa wins tomorrow, Detroit is eliminated. If Ottawa wins any of the next remaining five, Detroit is eliminated. There is no team catching us for this playoff spot. I am tired of playing these games. We need to just chill.

The Sens have been good for a while, this is just talking about when they get the X beside their name in the standings.

Detroit would be eliminated from catching us, but not officially eliminated yet, as Montreal is below us. Technically, Buffalo is not eliminated yet, but they obviously won’t make it.

Detroit’s outside possibility is winning against Montreal and then winning their game in hand to be within one point. However, I don’t see any reason to believe Detroit is going to be able to string together a comeback this late, just not a good team.

Exactly. Let's enjoy the ride. The Sens will likely end up playing Tampa or Toronto in the first round regardless of what other teams do.

A bit disappointed by Columbus and their end of the season... now we have to endure both Montreal and Toronto in the playoffs. They'll get all the media attention

People act like the Habs are waaay ahead of schedule.

I actually think that’s false. Their key forward was drafted in 2017. Their second best forward was drafted in 2019. And one of their very good d was drafted in 2020.

They’ve also signed competent goaltending and continued to draft well.

We also likely could have made the playoffs the last two years if Dorion and DJ were not leading us.

The problem is they made the SCF in 2021, just 4 years ago but you're right that they weren't great before that. I had an argument with the Habs fan about it a few months ago and this is what I found :

2017–18 : 28th in P% (4th worst team)
2018–19 : 14th in P%
2019–20 : 24th in P% (8th worst team)
2020–21 : 18th in P%

21st overall for these 4 seasons

So they were a below average team that needed to rebuild but got hot at the right time for one last kick at the can for both Shea Weber and Carey Price

That said, based on the fact that they decided to rebuild the following season and revamp their whole management and scouting departments, plus coaching of course, it's impressive that they're already going to make the playoffs in their 4th rebuild season (we are in our 8th season in comparison)

For me, it just further shows that Dorion was a buffoon that had no idea what he was doing. Maybe we didn't have the same finances as them but you also don't have to be bad forever, just need smart management and drafting. Just imagine how good the Sens could be right now if they just had an average GM.

I see that people often refer to their negative goal differential but it's mostly due to the start of the season when they were bad. Since Patrik Laine joined that team (not saying it's all him), they are 30-17-6 for the 11th best P% (Sens have the 7th best one!) and have a +5 goal differential. They are unfortunately legit and are a new team we have to be concerned about in the East (thought that would start more next season). It also means that we might have to play them in the playoffs eventually (maybe not this year) and it's stressful, I'd rather play the Leafs

MTL has a -17 Goal differential, that's 1 ahead of Buffalo. this season could very easily look very different for them.

It's a game of inches, the difference between Buffalo, Det Clb, NYI and MTL is virtually nothing.

+5 since December 3rd when they got Laine back, and then added Carrier later. I disagree, I don't think they're as good defensively as Ottawa but they can score and are never done, they have several clutch players.

I'd be very confident in beating each of these teams easily in a series but Montreal, not confident, which fits with the 3 games we played vs them this season.

I think it's more like :

Ottawa
Montreal
....
Detroit
Columbus
NYI
Buffalo

When they “decided” to rebuild is not relevant.

Fact of the matter is their two best players were drafted a long time ago. It always made sense for them to start pushing now with Suzuki at 26. Another 2-3 years of complete rebuilding would have Suzuki at almost 30 when he first makes the playoffs lol. (Outside of that run).

I beleive that we should have and could have made the playoffs the last two years.

Two years ago we should have been able to squeak in with a different coach. DJ should have been let go if Dorion was going for it.

And last year without korpisalo I beleive we get in as well
